Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2—Twins Violet and Victor Small are right brain/left brain collaborators, who are writing their second book. Violet initiates the storytelling, but her brother's practical interruptions begin a series of exchanges that culminate in a story that pleases them both. This iteration by Kuipers and Murguia follows the same format as Violet and Victor Write the Best-Ever Bookworm Book (Little, Brown, 2014), and visual assists—color-coded notebook pages and dialogic font corresponding to each character's T-shirts (violet for Violet and orange for Victor)—help readers keep track of the action. The somewhat complicated narrative structure, alternating imaginary and actual events along with character voice, limits the title's use in a group setting, but young readers and writers will spend plenty of time examining the story on their own. Murguia's playful and lovely pencil drawings are matched to collages (book pages, paper sculpture, photographed objects, and more) that add layers to the visual narrative. The underlying message of cooperation and adaptation, perfect for 21st-century skills curriculum reinforcement. VERDICT A fine addition to picture book collections, especially where the first book has fans.—Lisa Lehmuller, East Providence School District, RI

This was perfect for my 6 year old granddaughter who has a big imagination and loves Australia and unicorns.

Amazing! I'd forgotten how great kids books could be! The illustrations are not just beautiful, but fit perfectly with the story. The story is not just cute, but it is fun and Violet and Victor are very believable siblings (probably believable twins too, but I don't have a twin so I'm a little fuzzier on those relationship dynamics).

My 5 year old loves the book, he was very into it when I read it to him last night and he has been carrying it around with him so far today.

I read it with different voices for Violet and Victor, and that helped him get the vibe of brother and sister dueling storytelling :)

Their story (within the story) is cute, also. It really might be the most fabulous fairy tale.

The cockatoo was my kid's favorite part :)

This was received as part of the Goodreads Giveaways program.

This was a well-received book for my girlfriend's kids who are under 6 years. I liked that the girl in the tale is as active in moving the story forward as the little boy, and also that both protagonists work together to successfully solve problems. The kids were taken with it too. Beautifully written and illustrated with a cute twist at the end.

Twins Violet and Victor Small seem to have very different interests. Violet loves to write and classifies herself as a storyteller. She would like to write the most fabulous fairy tale in the history of fairy tales. However, Victor has no time for fairy tales, castles, or make-believe. What he is interested in is working on his Animals from Australia project. But Violet wants no part of hearing about his project. She shushes him and proceeds to share her idea for a story, “Violet was born in a castle--” She is interrupted by her brother. “You were born in a hospital.” She continues, “Princess Violet was born in a gleaming castle in Fairy Tale Kingdom.” She is again stopped by her brother. “That’s not a real place.” Will Violet ever finish her most fabulous fairy tale in the history of fairy tales? And will Victor step in to help or hinder this fabulous story?

Cons: Different type of book that may take two readings to fully appreciate.

Pros: Because the twins talk back and forth and add different elements to the fairy tale this book could be a little confusing. But Bethanie Deeney Murguia has done a wonderful job of color coding dialog and different additions to the story in violet and orange. Of course, Violet is the one in violet and Victor in orange. Without the wonderful illustrations I think the story might slightly suffer, but with both author and illustrator this turns out to be a very enjoyable read.

VIOLET AND VICTOR WRITE THE MOST FABULOUS FAIRY TALE by Alice Kuipers is a beautifully illustrated picture book about twins who write a fairy tale together.

When Violet begins writing a fairytale, her twin Victor joins in with helpful and not-so-helpful ideas and advise. While Violet writes about fictional creatures in a marvelous kingdom, Victor prefers to weave in Australian animals and a wicked witch.

The unusual, mixed media illustrations use rich blues and purples to create a fascinating imaginary world. Different text colors denote the narrator and easy-to-read, handwritten sheets feature the twins’ creative writing.

Librarians will find that the attractive cover and cute storyline will make this a popular picture book. Young readers will enjoy the sibling banter and humorous situations, while teachers will appreciate the author’s nod to the writing process and the twins’ use of vivid vocabulary.
