Frequently Asked Questions

What are CEUs?

Click here to open the answer container. Click here to close the answer container.

Continuing education (CE) is education for counselors and therapists to keep them updated with changes in mental health research and treatment. This education is often measured in credit hours and continuing education units (CEUs). One CEU is equal to 10 credit hours. States vary on how many hours are required and whether or not a portion of them must be completed in person.

Why are CEUs Important?

Click here to open the answer container. Click here to close the answer container.

Continuing education for counselors is critical as it helps practitioners to continue their education and hone their craft. Staying current on CE can help you ensure you’re extending your practice to as many demographics as possible. Continuing education also helps clinicians stay updated with trends and new research in the field.

A few reasons to stay up to date with CE include:

  • Ensure continued licensure
  • Stay up to date with changes and advancements in mental health and therapy
  • Expand your knowledge of unfamiliar methodologies and demographics

Do Counselors and Psychologists Use the Same CEUs?

Click here to open the answer container. Click here to close the answer container.

Not quite. While there can be a great deal of overlap between the CE that psychologists and counselors use, these two groups still use different governing bodies. Many CE resources you find will likely be approved by both the APA and the NBCC; it’s wise to always double-check with your state requirements to ensure any given CE resource will be approved for you.
