In Our Experience
Overall, Zencare is a high-quality platform that can offer your practice a lot of value. While it is more costly both upfront and ongoing compared to other options, it has some of the best and most comprehensive features and customer service offered by any directory.

Overview
GoodTherapy.org is a popular and widely visited therapist directory that allows you to market your practice to new clients. It offers clients the ability to find you via a proprietary matching and filtering system. GoodTherapy costs $30.95 – $49.95 monthly, with higher subscription costs including access to continuing education and practice management features.
One of the best things about GoodTherapy.org is the volume of clients that actively use the site. GoodTherapy is a well-known and relatively long-standing therapist directory. It is able to bring in more client leads than smaller or newer directories might.
In Our Experience
Overall, GoodTherapy could be a good investment of your time and money if you have a savvy understanding of self-promotion and writing. The platform is a bit unwieldy and certainly outdated, but if you are willing to look past its surface-level flaws, there is a great volume of clients who come to the site looking for a therapist.
- Price $29.95 monthly
- Monthly User Volume on Website: 1 million+
- Features Offered: Directory profile listing, telehealth platform
Why We Chose It
Psychology Today is the heavy-hitter of directories in terms of user volume. Millions of people use Psychology Today, so a profile here could generate a lot of client leads.
Pros & Cons
- One of the largest therapist directories available today
- Simple, easy-to-use interface
- Built-in telehealth platform and client communication tools
- Detailed filtering for clients helps avoid poor client-therapist matches
- May be difficult to compete in larger cities
- The interface is somewhat limited
- Data reporting is not very comprehensive
Cost
A Psychology Today therapist directory listing costs $29.95 monthly and includes full access to the platform, an ongoing listing, the ability for clients to communicate with you directly, a telehealth platform, and many other features. There is no free trial available, but you may receive discounts for referring other providers to the directory.
For more details on pricing, visit our full Psychology Today review.
Overview
Psychology Today is a popular and powerful therapist directory that can link your practice with a large audience of potential clients. A Psychology Today therapist directory listing costs $29.95 monthly and includes a number of features, including a free telehealth platform, secure client messaging, and a wide audience of potential clients.
One of the most important aspects of Psychology Today is its massive and unparalleled base of users, with over 1 million users visiting the directory homepage every month from organic search results traffic. That is the highest number of any therapist directory, however, this popularity goes both ways; competition on the platform, especially in heavily populated areas, can be difficult to overcome.
In Our Experience
The Psychology Today directory is a great choice for most therapists and practices. The sheer volume of potential clients it can expose you to is likely worth the cost. However, if you need more advanced practice management features, or you live in a heavily populated area, alternatives (or a secondary directory) may need to be considered.
- Price: Varies – Typically $70 per booking
- Monthly User Volume on Website: 2 million+
- Features Offered: Listing on Zocdoc marketplace, superb client search features, telehealth platform
Why We Chose It
Zocdoc offers profile listings for more than just therapists. Physicians and medical providers of varied specialties can also create a profile. If you have a specific niche not covered in other directories, Zocdoc may be a good directory choice.
Pros & Cons
- Automated appointment reminders
- Easy online booking that integrates with many practice management systems and calendars
- Clients can leave verified reviews on Zocdoc and boost your visibility and brand reputation
- Automated system makes it easy for clients to complete intake paperwork online
- Great data reporting
- Fees are not listed until late into the sign-up process
- Clients can easily cancel appointments, which could lead to you still paying a Zocdoc fee for last-minute cancellations
- Heavy competition from other therapists and providers, especially in densely populated areas
- Could be relatively more expensive than competitors that use a set monthly pricing model
Cost
A search engine optimized profile on Zocdoc is provided for no cost; however, when a new client schedules an appointment with you directly through Zocdoc you will be charged a fee, which varies depending on location and specialty – our example of a psychotherapist in California incurs a fee of $70 per new client booking.
For more details on pricing, visit our full Zocdoc review.
Overview
Zocdoc is a directory system for many different medical specialties. Zocdoc allows practices to create a listing on their widely-known directory that will allow potential clients to find them through Zocdoc’s proprietary matching system. The intake process is made simpler with Zocdoc by ensuring clients can complete all of their intake paperwork in one place prior to their appointment.
Zocdoc offers a huge client base – even bigger than Psychology Today – however, it is not a therapist-only directory, so not all of those users are looking for therapy. It’s a safe bet that a good number of them are, though.
In Our Experience
During my time using and reviewing Zocdoc, I was impressed with the service. I felt that it was easy for both practitioners and clients to use, and would likely provide a great deal of value to a practice, particularly if you are having a difficult time attracting clients.
Practices in densely populated areas may find competition stiff, but the detailed filtering settings and the ability to solicit client reviews can help you stand out. The additional features, including calendar management and intake documentation, really help the process flow smoothly. Ultimately, whether or not Zocdoc works for you will probably depend on how you feel about paying per client booking and how that will affect your practice.

- Monthly User Volume on Website: 30k+

TherapyDen offers free profiles, as well as premium profiles that start at $10 monthly, making it the most affordable option for therapist directories.

- An exceptionally inclusive set of therapist filters
- Great for small or growing practices
- Can integrate with SimplePractice calendar
- Relatively small monthly volume compared to other directories
- No other features available such as a telehealth platform or billing assistance.

Cost

For more details about pricing, visit our full TherapyDen review.
Overview
TherapyDen is a robust therapist directory with a focus on client inclusivity. A basic profile is available at no cost, and premium features are available on a “pay-what-you-can” basis with a minimum fee of $10 monthly.
TherapyDen, while a simpler and smaller directory than many of the big directories, has a specific focus on accessibility and inclusivity in its filtering system.
In Our Experience
Since there are no costs, it’s difficult to argue against making a basic profile, and considering a premium profile if it suits your practice. During my review of TherapyDen, I found no reason to avoid this platform, and believe that it would benefit most practices – particularly those on a tight budget.
TherapyDen can’t compete with the sheer volume of traffic received by the likes of Psychology Today or Zocdoc. But, this directory may allow your profile to catch the attention of clients that have “fallen through the cracks.” Plus, if you live in a densely populated area, you will have far less competition than on the more popular directories.

Mental Health Match focuses on attempting to provide the best client-therapist matches possible by implementing their own client-therapist matching system in addition to allowing clients to search by traditional search parameters.
In Our Experience
Overall, during my time using and reviewing Mental Health Match, I was impressed by the unique value that the service offers both clients and therapists. While it remains to be seen whether you should cancel your Psychology Today membership in exchange for Mental Health Match, it would make a good secondary service, and the two-month trial and easy onboarding process means there is very little risk involved in trying it.

On top of the client leads and referrals, there are many CE resources, events, and activism opportunities. If you’re passionate about and experienced in social justice-oriented care, Inclusive Therapists is a great directory to join.
It isn’t going to be your main directory – it just can’t compete with the big guys. But, if you’re looking for something with an excellent mission and values; or are just wanting to learn more about this style of therapy, Inclusive Therapists is a great place to start.

It is totally free to list yourself on Open Path Collective, however, you must agree to offer services at a rate of $30 – $80 per session. Other features include discounts on services such as EHR platforms and other directories.
In Our Experience
Overall, I found Open Path Collective to be a very impressive organization that is definitely worth your time and consideration. The mission statement is a great cause, and the free profile offers a lot of potential value.
While it might not have the same traffic as other directories, I would consider using it as a secondary source of referrals on top of one of the bigger options, if you are able and willing to offer services at a discounted rate.

Best Therapist Directories with Insurance Credentialing and Billing
Aside from traditional therapist directories like we’ve discussed above, there are a few directory platforms that help practitioners begin accepting in-network insurance clients. Essentially, practitioners apply to join these platforms and work with them as independent contractors while the platform negotiates with insurance payors on the practitioner’s behalf while handling all marketing and billing.
Most of these directory platforms do not charge a monthly fee; instead, they have negotiations to be paid directly by insurance companies, but there may be some that still charge monthly fees, especially if they include unique features. Often, these platforms allow practitioners to achieve far better reimbursement rates than would be possible by negotiating with insurance payors themselves.
Price: $125 monthly; $1,140 annually
Services Offered: Credentialing with major payors, marketing, full billing management

Why We Chose It
Out of the full-service platforms that allow therapists to credential with insurance payors and manage marketing as an independent contractor, Alma offers the best set of features, best reimbursement rates, and highest-quality design.
Pros & Cons
Pros

- EHR features such as treatment plan templates, telehealth, and others
- Higher reimbursement rates than competitors, according to members
- Discounts on annual memberships
- Comprehensive community and continuing education content
Cons
- One of the only directory and insurance billing platforms that require a monthly fee
- No publicly available information about reimbursement rates – however, this is usually the case with this type of platform
- To use Alma, you must be fully, independently licensed
- No free trial period
Cost
Alma costs $125 monthly or $1,140 annually. This cost includes all of the features of Alma and is a much simpler pricing system compared to many of the other billing and directory platforms available. There is no free trial or demo period offered. Reimbursement rates will vary significantly depending on your location, credentials, and other variables, however Alma’s contracted rates are typically higher than a therapist could obtain through credentialing on their own.
Overview
Alma is a comprehensive billing and directory platform for therapists and psychologists. Features include billing support, insurance credentialing, and a provider directory. Alma costs $125 monthly or $1,140 annually; there is no free trial available.

Why We Chose It
Headway is another great in-network billing platform that is very similar to Alma. Both platforms go great hand-in-hand.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Headway is free to use for therapists
- Additional features for insurance and out-of-pocket billing
- Existing clients can be imported into Headway for easy management
- Both talk therapists and medication practitioners are able to join
Cons
- Not available in all states yet
- You must be fully licensed to use Headway
- No features for practice management or documentation
- Some users reported lower reimbursement rates than competitors
Cost
There is no cost for joining Headway as a therapist. The service can be offered for free to practitioners upfront, as Headway negotiates all billing rates with insurance payors and will receive a portion of that payout. If you choose to work with Headway, you will sign on as an independent (1099) contractor who handles all aspects of client care, while Headway handles client billing and marketing.
Overview
Headway is a service for therapists and mental health practitioners for managing insurance billing and marketing. Headway’s directory allows clients to view therapists that are in-network with their insurance. There is no cost for joining Headway as a therapist.
Since Headway doesn’t charge any fees, its feature offerings are not quite as robust as Alma’s. There are no features for EHR or practice management, and the platform isn’t available in every state yet.
In Our Experience
If you already have EHR software and practice management is handled, then Headway is a good platform for credentialing and billing. It doesn’t charge anything like Alma does, but there are scattered reports of Alma securing higher reimbursement rates. If you need more features or practice in a state that Headway isn’t in, then Alma is the better choice.

Final Verdict
Ultimately the best therapist directory for you will depend on your given situation. However, there are a few clear winners in terms of quality. If you’re looking for a primary source of client referrals, a larger, more established directory such as Psychology Today or Zocdoc may be for you. Alternatively, if you’re looking for only a slight boost in referrals with minimal cost, maybe TherapyDen is the better choice.
Meanwhile, more specialized situations may call for different platforms – for instance, maybe you’re looking to market to in-network clients. Alma not only handles marketing, but credentialing, billing, and EHR all at once.
It’s worthwhile to take your time and shop around – especially with directories that offer free profiles or free trials. In those instances, monetary risk is limited, so you’ll only lose the time it takes to create the profile if it ends up unsuited to your needs. It is common for practices to list on multiple directories at once to increase exposure.
Things to Consider Before Listing Your Practice on Therapy Directories
When you’re considering joining a therapist directory, there are a few important factors worth considering:
- The number of people in your specific geographic area that are likely to be searching for practitioners
- The degree of competition you’ll be facing among other therapists in your area on any given directory
- The time and energy you are able and willing to commit toward a strategy for improving your marketing
- Whether you’re interested in bolstering online presence by writing blog posts or articles
- Whether you’re looking for a main source of client referrals, or you’re simply looking for a secondary or supplemental source.
Tips for Finding the Right Therapist Directories for Your Practice
- Look for directories that provide a good balance of potential client volume and local competition
- Be mindful of how much competition you’ll be facing in your geographic area
- Consider looking for options that allow you to build your brand and publish articles or blog posts
- Consider how you can integrate you directory listing with your website. If you don’t have a website yet, look into the best website builders for therapists to get started.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Do Therapist Directories Work?
Therapist directories allow you to list yourself or your practice to a public search tool that allows potential clients to sort and find the therapists in their area. Directories usually charge a monthly fee to maintain their profile. Clients find your profile and contact you for scheduling, or schedule directly, depending on how the platform is designed.
What Do I Include in My Therapist Directory Listing?
In your therapist directory listing, it’s important to focus on a few aspects:
- Approachability – clients should immediately gain the impression that you are warm, approachable, and welcoming to them regardless of what they may be going through
- Depth – ensure your listing captures details of your approach. Be specific here; it will ensure that your clients are well-matched to your particular style.
- Specificity of Expertise – your listing needs to express what specialties are really your specialties and explain thoroughly why you are an expert in them.
- Call to Action – toward the end of your listing (or at multiple points) your listing should directly ask potential clients to take an action such as visiting your website, scheduling an appointment, or contacting you.
- Visual Elements – Secondary to the content but almost as important is how you are representing yourself visually. Ideally, your listing should include recent, high-quality photos and videos.
Is a Therapist Directory Listing Worth It?
Whether a therapist directory listing is worth it to you and your practice is entirely dependent on a wide range of factors including your practice’s current dynamic, its financial situation, your goals, and where you are located. Most important, perhaps, is your therapeutic niche. Generalists will have an easier time being listed but will have a lot of competition to overcome, whereas practitioners with a defined niche will appear to clients much more readily.
