I just completed my 2026 test-drive of Grow Therapy, and while it was my first time using the platform, I join my previous ChoosingTherapy.com reviewers in being impressed by what it has to offer: A network of over 19k therapists and medication prescribers, with a thorough but easy-to-use directory full of filters for finding your ideal match.

Grow Therapy is also in-network with tons of insurance plans, including some Medicaid and Medicare. Providers on the platform offer therapy and psychiatry services for kids, teens, adults, and couples, each setting their own rate and which insurance plans they accept.

Since I know what to look for in a therapist, sorting through a directory to find a therapist wasn’t a deterrent for me (in fact I prefer it!), but for those new to therapy or not sure where to start, this might be a bit overwhelming.

Grow Therapy is available in all 50 US states, offering a wide range of services for children (6-12), teenagers (13-17), adults, and couples, as well as medication management. Grow Therapy’s all-in-one platform makes it easy to find therapists and medication providers who are in-network with your insurance, including some Medicaid and Medicare plans. It also offers simple rescheduling and cancelation options, and doesn’t require a subscription, so clients can explore therapy without a daunting up-front commitment.

To find a therapist on Grow’s directory, all you have to enter is your state and insurance, but you have the option to get really granular and sort by lots of different factors, like therapy modalities, qualities regarding the provider’s identity, and more. You can also choose whether you’d like to see your provider online, in-person, or have the option for both (though choosing in-person will give you far fewer options). This system is different from many online therapy platforms that provide automatic therapist matching.

After you find a therapist who seems like a good fit, you can book a first session with them directly from their Grow Therapy profile. At this point, you’ll be prompted to input your contact, insurance, and billing information to book your appointment. All transactions and appointments will happen through Grow Therapy’s platform, which can be accessed through its app or on a web browser on a computer.

If you don’t want to do the work of finding your own provider, you may prefer to use another online therapy provider. Some of our other top recommendations are BetterHelp for easy onboarding and decent cash-pay prices, or Brightside Health for both therapy and psychiatry, which takes most major insurance plans.

Detailed Review of Grow Therapy

We rate each online therapy platform we review using thorough scoring criteria with over a dozen unique metrics. Grow Therapy scored quite highly, with an overall score of 4.5 out of 5 stars. I was really impressed by the amount of providers on the directory, and how easy it was to find a range of different treatment options in my state of Oregon—though less-populated states may offer fewer choices.

Grow also scored highly in the categories for therapist credentials, privacy, and ongoing access to providers. As soon as I signed up, I had access to a messaging portal with my new therapist.

The category with the lowest score is customer service: Grow Therapy doesn’t list any phone number for support, and instead you send messages to its AI chatbot if you have an issue before being connected to a human agent. The other lower score it received was in therapist matching, as there is no option to fill out a form and receive just a few automatic options that fit your needs. Instead, you have to go through the work to find your own provider.

Finding a Therapist on Grow Therapy’s Directory

One thing I really like about Grow Therapy is that you don’t have to sign up or enter any information before looking through the directory and seeing if there are any providers that feel like a good fit for you. Just enter in your state, the name of your insurance provider (or choose cash pay), and whether you’re looking for therapy or psychiatry to view an initial list of profiles, then you can use other filters if you want to get more granular in your search.

You can sort Grow Therapy’s directory of providers by:

  • Service (Talk therapy or medication management)
  • Needs you’d like to address (everything from anxiety and self-esteem to adoption and career counseling)
  • Age of the client (since some providers on Grow see children and teens)
  • Provider’s gender
  • Provider’s identity (including race, religion, and LGBTQ)
  • Availability (see only providers available within 72 hours or who have availability within seven days)
  • Appointment time options (including morning and evening appointments)
  • Appointment date options
  • Language
  • Treatment method (CBT, Family Therapy, Internal Family Systems, etc)

When I searched the Grow Therapy directory for myself, I put my needs as depression, anxiety, and LGBTQ, chose “cash” from the drop-down list of insurance options, and had 69 providers show up in my state of Oregon. This felt overwhelming, so I went into the “all filters” category and also selected my provider’s gender as “woman,” and provider’s identity as “LGBTQ,” and that narrowed me down to only four therapist options. From the search page I could see each therapist’s credentials and how long they’ve been in practice, what the cash-pay price was for each session, plus their next available appointment time and their top specialties.

I then opened and read through each of the four therapists’ bios in full, taking my time to see how they each described themselves, their strengths, what the first session would look like, and who they say they’re best positioned to serve. I really love that Grow Therapy has providers fill out these standard informational categories in their profiles, and I found the “clients I’m best positioned to serve” category instrumental in ultimately choosing my therapist from the four options.

One of the bios I read through focused more on children, adolescents, and substance use concerns in the “who they serve best” category, which didn’t suit my needs, while another talked about supporting people through life transitions, personal growth, and questions about sexuality and spirituality—much more up my alley. Plus, this therapist’s “Top specialties,” listed below the written bio portion, were LGBTQ, Mood Disorders (aka depression), and Spirituality. Bingo.

Scrolling down further on her profile, I could see the treatment methods she used, with a brief written description of each, plus a couple of ratings given to her from past clients. The therapist’s profile also listed all of her upcoming available appointment times (this therapist even had a Saturday slot open!), so all I had to do was click on the time I wanted and then I was prompted to finish signing up for Grow Therapy and enter my contact information and credit card. I also had the chance here to change to insurance and enter that information, where Grow gave me an estimate of what my copay would be.

Note: I strongly suggest that you take your time and really consider your top needs when selecting a therapist, whether it be on Grow or on any other directory. The client-therapist relationship is one of the key factors for people who make quicker, longer-lasting improvements in therapy, so it’s worth taking your time to find someone who really feels like a good fit as far as specialty, but also personality. Reading through what each therapist has to say about themself, their style, and who they best serve should give you a good picture into how they’ll conduct sessions and what you can expect. I promise it’s worth taking your time on this step.

Additionally, therapists set their own session lengths on Grow Therapy. I looked through dozens of profiles, and saw both 45-minute and 60-minute sessions offered. This information isn’t readily available when scrolling through the directory, but when you click the “See more availabilities” button on a provider’s profile, you can see whether they offer 45- or 60-minute appointment times.

Navigating the Grow Therapy Client Portal

Grow Therapy just launched an app, where you can navigate your appointments, utilize the extra resources in the “Toolkit,” and use its AI chatbot, Coach. All your personal information is stored here and can be accessed and changed at any time.

Once you log in to Grow Therapy, you’ll see your personal dashboard, which lists your upcoming appointments and any outstanding tasks, like completing mental health check-ins. Then you’ll have your Appointments tab, where you can edit or cancel any upcoming sessions, plus see what you’ll be responsible for paying for, whether you’re paying out of pocket or using your insurance.

There’s also an Account tab, in which you can make edits to your personal information and insurance coverage, plus see Grow Therapy’s terms and change your settings.

Therapist Messaging

The Messages tab in Grow Therapy allows you to send a message to your provider at any time. A few minutes after I had scheduled my first appointment with my new therapist, she sent me instructions on how to join my upcoming session and a reminder to complete my “mental health check-in” (depression and anxiety screenings) before our appointment.

A therapist messaging portal like this one is one of my favorite things about online therapy. While you shouldn’t expect to get an answer any time of day or night, and you shouldn’t expect long, therapy-level responses from your provider, it’s a great place to jot down something you want to cover in your next session together, or ask a follow-up question to something that came up in a session.

Grow Therapy’s AI Tool, Coach

On Grow Therapy’s app, users have access to an AI mental health chatbot named Coach. When I used Coach, it gave me several helpful suggestions and exercises for dealing with anxiety and getting back to sleep after waking up in the night. I appreciated that it asked me if I wanted to vent or if I wanted advice, and its responses, while relatively generic, were helpful and stayed on task.

When I mentioned that I was anxious about flying that day, Coach validated my feelings and then asked if I wanted to walk through the STOP coping skill together, where it coached me through Stopping (pausing what I was doing), Taking a step back (with a deep breath), Observing (noticing what was happening around me), and Proceeding mindfully (choosing what was going to help the situation. It went step by step through the exercise and validated my answers as I went.

I like that Coach always offered more tools or exercises, but then was also careful about not continuing the conversation for no reason. It asked if I needed more help or if I felt set for now, and when I said I was done for now it wished me a good day (and a good sleep that night, something I brought up as a concern).

Other Resources in the Therapy Toolkit

Grow’s therapy toolkit, available in the app or through your dashboard on a web browser, also provides tons of other resources to support your wellness journey. These were broken into three categories: Mood & Emotion Regulation, Coping & Resilience, and Relationships & Communication. Each category included dozens of videos, podcasts, handouts, and worksheets. I watched a few of the videos on anxiety and depression, and found them to be helpful explainers with actionable information.

I really liked how interactive the worksheets were. Each was structured and guided you through the activity, with boxes to fill in your responses. I completed the Activity Menu worksheet, where I checked off boxes of activities that I enjoy, so I wouldn’t have to start from scratch when I needed to improve my mood. My responses got automatically sent to my provider when I submitted the worksheet.

My First Grow Therapy Session

The day before my therapy session, I was sent text and email reminders that included a link for me to join at my appointment time, then again an hour before my session. I tried joining my session from my phone first to see how well this setup would work, and it was seamless from the link I was texted. However, my personal preference is to have video sessions on my laptop, so I exited out on my phone, opened up my laptop, and joined from the link I was emailed.

I like to get settled in about five minutes before my appointment time so I can make sure I have my device plugged in, get myself wrapped in a cozy blanket, and have some water or tea next to me. Plus, the first time you start on a new platform, you might have to update the permissions on your phone or laptop to ensure your audio and visual work properly, so make sure to allow for a little bit of buffer time, especially on a first call.

I’ve been utilizing therapy and reviewing online platforms for a long time and I’ve seen dozens of therapists at this point, but I still get a bit nervous when meeting a new provider! If you feel a little bit keyed up before your first session with a new therapist, this is perfectly normal. Especially with online therapy, you’ve probably heard horror stories of providers joining from their cars or with kids screaming in the background—but I’ve personally never had this experience.

My therapist joined our session a minute after the hour, from the comfort of a lovely, darkly painted and book-lined office setting. She put me at ease right away with her calm, genial tone of voice and started off with a bit of chit-chat to make sure I was comfortable. Our 60-minute session flew by, and while first appointments can feel a bit overwhelming as you talk through your background and current concerns, the right therapist will never push you to talk about anything you’re not ready for.

My therapist took a few notes on her computer while we spoke, but we also chatted briefly about the AI summarization tool—for her, this tool helped her be more present during the call so she could focus on responding to me as we talked, then she could look back through the summarization when she did her charting after we completed our session.

Note: During signup, I was informed that my therapist would like to use Grow Therapy’s AI-enabled session summarization, “a secure tool that creates a recap of what you discussed and your plan going forward.” I had the option to consent or not, and I could change my mind at any time in my client portal. When I asked my therapist about this tool, she said that it’s fully HIPAA-compliant, and she just uses it to get a brief summary of the session, then the information gets deleted after she completes her session notes.

There Was a Slight Lag in Our Video Connection

Now, online therapy is incredibly convenient and has many advantages, but something you can’t escape, no matter what platform you choose, is some video lag. Grow’s video platform is no different, and there was an ever-so-slight lag in our connection. It never got glitchy and the audio worked well for the entirety of the call, but this is just something to be aware of.

If you have any connection issues during your video call, make sure you’re on wifi if you’re using your phone, and if you’re on a computer, ensure you’ve closed out any extraneous tabs or windows, and try removing any devices from the wifi that you’re not currently using to open up more bandwidth.

My Thoughts After My First Grow Therapy Session

I’m glad I took my time when looking through the Grow Therapy directory. The therapist I chose was incredibly warm but still professional and knowledgeable, and offered several helpful resources for me right away to help with some of my immediate concerns before diving into getting more of my mental health background information.

Grow Therapy made it easy for her to send some resources while we were talking through its chat feature within the video platform, and I could even keep our video up on my laptop while opening the links she sent me.

I could see myself continuing on with this therapist if I didn’t already have one I was working with, and Grow Therapy was a really convenient platform for receiving care.

Medication Management Through Grow Therapy

Getting started with medication management through Grow Therapy works similar to its therapy process. A previous reviewer, Caitlin, went through the process and had a great experience. She did note that there were fewer medication prescribers on the directory compared to therapists in her state of Texas, though when I checked in my state of Oregon there were a similar number of therapists versus prescribers (about 70 of each when I didn’t add any filters).

Caitlin really liked the provider she saw, stating that the appointment actually went over time for her to finish answering relevant questions and making sure she was comfortable with the new medication being prescribed. She also asked questions regarding all of Caitlin’s current medications, not just the mental health medications, and was incredibly knowledgeable and precise when discussing potential symptoms and contraindications.

New medications were sent to Caitlin’s local pharmacy within a couple days of the appointment.

Note: Just like with therapists, medication prescribers set their own appointment time slots and out-of-pocket session fees. I saw mostly 60-minute sessions, with some at 45-minutes. Cash-pay costs were mostly between $200 and $300 in my state of Oregon, though a handful of providers offered 60-minute sessions between $150–$170, and one provider went as low as $100.

Grow Therapy’s Care Coordination Program

One unique offering from Grow Therapy is its Care Coordination program for clients who come to Grow but end up needing a higher level of care. Instead of leaving people to find more intensive care on their own, providers on Grow Therapy can easily refer clients to the Care Coordination team, who can help them get set up with a partner program that better fits their needs, including Charlie Health for virtual IOPs, Equip Health for eating disorder treatment, and Navigator Healthcare for substance use treatment.

So, while Grow Therapy isn’t set up for high acuity care, it has a system in place to help match patients with the level of care appropriate to their needs.

Cost & Insurance

Most Grow Therapy clients pay for therapy and psychiatry services using their health insurance, as Grow accepts over 100 different insurance plans. Copays are as little as $0 for some clients, while it states that the average copay is around $21+ per session. Copayments vary based on individual clients’ insurance coverage, and there are no additional fees to use Grow Therapy beyond the insurance copay.

Common insurance plans accepted include:

  • Aetna
  • Ambetter
  • Anthem
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield
  • CareFirst
  • Cigna
  • Evernorth
  • Highmark
  • Kaiser Permanente
  • Medica
  • Medicaid
  • Medicare
  • Optum
  • Oscar
  • Oxford
  • UnitedHealthcare
  • WellCare

If you plan on using insurance, I recommend using Grow Therapy’s cost estimate tool before signing up to see what your potential copay will be.

Therapists and medication prescribers on Grow Therapy also accept cash payments, generally ranging from $75–$150+ for therapy and $150–$300+ for medication management. If choosing cash pay, clients can find fees listed on each provider’s profile before booking.

User Reviews

Grow Therapy’s app is brand new with few reviews, though they are almost entirely positive thus far. Trustpilot contributors gave Grow Therapy a 4.8-star rating overall with more than 5,000 reviews. Most positive reviews had excellent things to say about their therapists, however, some users had occasional technical problems or seemingly isolated issues with customer service.

Reviews from Trustpilot | 4.7 out of 5 stars | 6.8k reviews

Positive reviews from Trustpilot focus on Grow Therapy’s providers, stating that they are amazing and very helpful. One user stated that in just three weeks, she has already witnessed a significant improvement in her mental wellness.

Negative reviews from Trustpilot are mainly reports of problems with customer service. Several clients have stated that they are not receiving replies to their inquiries and that most of their emails and chat messages are only being answered by a bot. These issues seem to be isolated problems and not indicative of most people’s experience. A few others shared that they had issues with connectivity during their video sessions.

Reviews from Reddit | r/socialwork, r/therapy, r/CBT

Positive reviews from users on Reddit about Grow Therapy noted how easy it is to find a therapist match and commended their telehealth platform.

Negative reviews from users on Reddit about Grow Therapy focus on their therapists canceling their appointments. A client stated that her therapist kept canceling their appointments and did not give her a reason as to why. Note that, with platforms like Grow Therapy, therapists have a lot of freedom, so isolated incidents like these likely don’t speak to most peoples’ experience. Others mention having issues with insurance and billing.

Alternatives & Competitors

While Grow Therapy could be a great option for many, it won’t be right for everyone. Headway is another platform very similar to Grow Therapy and offers many of the same features, however, Headway is only available for those with an in-network insurance plan, whereas anyone can use Grow Therapy. BetterHelp’s subscription-based platform may be a good alternative for those without insurance.

Headway

Rating:
Overall rating of 4 out of 5 possible.
(4 out of 5)

Price: $20–$50+ copay per session

Grow Therapy and Headway are fairly similar in that they are both insurance-based therapy provider platforms. However, Grow Therapy also offers the option for cash pay, while Headway is insurance only. Grow Therapy has a few built-in resources, including an AI mental health chatbot, videos, and worksheets. Headway lacks these extra features. However, most Headway therapists will send you resources via email if you discussed them during your live session.

Grow Therapy and BetterHelp are very different platforms. While Grow Therapy offers both online therapy and psychiatry appointments, BetterHelp only offers online therapy services. Furthermore, BetterHelp is a subscription-based online therapy service with a monthly cost, while Grow Therapy providers charge you per session and each provider sets their own fees.

Another big difference between Grow Therapy and BetterHelp is insurance acceptance. Almost all of Grow Therapy’s providers accept insurance, whereas BetterHelp accepts extremely limited insurance plans in select states at this time. If you select a provider who does not accept your insurance, your Grow Therapy provider can create a superbill for you, while superbills are not available from BetterHelp.

BetterHelp’s subscription includes free optional weekly group sessions on hundreds of topics, including parenting support, resources for depression, groups for LGBTQ+ folks, and more, while Grow Therapy doesn’t offer group therapy at all. However, Grow Therapy’s other resources in its Therapy Toolkit are similar to what BetterHelp offers. Grow Therapy also offers an AI chatbot, while BetterHelp gives users access to a journaling space.

Why You Can Trust My Review

“I’ve spent several years testing dozens of online therapy platforms, and Grow Therapy provided a really excellent user experience. The website, directory, and patient portal were straightforward to navigate, and it took less than 10 minutes to get started, though I certainly chose to take longer than that to read through therapist bios to find a good fit. I could see how taking time during this step might not be right for everyone, as some people might prefer to sign up and be matched with a therapist.

I appreciated how each provider on Grow filled out several paragraphs worth of information on their profile page so I could get to know them and their style before booking. This led me to a great therapist fit—but also, if it hadn’t worked out, I could rest easy knowing that it was simple to switch therapists, and I could ask for help if needed.

I’m not the only one on our team who’s had a good experience with Grow Therapy: Two other reviewers on our team signed up for therapy and medication management, and both had great experiences. My colleague, Matthew, ended up using Grow Therapy when finding a therapist personally, and he continues to find it to be a convenient way to receive care using his insurance.

I highly recommend Grow Therapy for online therapy and psychiatry services, especially if you live in a state where you’ll have many providers to choose from.”

History & News About Grow Therapy

Grow Therapy Logo
  • Year Founded: 2020
  • Founders: Manoj Kanagaraj, Jake Cooper

Manoj Kanagaraj and Jake Cooper are the co-founders of Grow Therapy.1 They founded the company in October 2020 and, as of January 2025, earned $75 million in Series B funding to continue expanding its services.2 It’s actively adding more providers to the platform, and works with almost every major insurance provider, including Medicare and Medicaid in select states.

As of February 2025, after several rounds of testing, Grow Therapy has rolled out an AI ambient listening tool to all the therapists on its platform. This allows for providers to be more present in sessions, as the software provides therapy notes and visit summaries that can be sent to clients. The software was developed in-house, and both the therapist and client must consent to its use.3

On May 28, 2025, Grow Therapy announced its Care Coordination program that helps streamline referrals to alternative providers, such as IOP and MAT programs, for clients needing higher levels of care.4

In September of 2025, Grow Therapy acquired Neosync, a data privacy company, to continue developing safer data privacy measures by identifying and anonymizing information.5 In November 2025, Grow Therapy announced that it was expanding its headquarters, moving from SoHo to Lower Manhattan and creating nearly 200 new jobs.6

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Grow Therapy a Legitimate Company?

Click here to open the answer container. Click here to close the answer container.

Yes, Grow Therapy is a legitimate mental health platform and is HIPAA-compliant. All Grow Therapy providers are fully licensed in the states in which they practice. Each provider who joins Grow Therapy goes through a vetting process by a live person and must submit proof of their licensure.

What are Grow Therapy's drawbacks?

Click here to open the answer container. Click here to close the answer container.

The biggest drawback to using Grow Therapy is that you have to find a provider on your own. If you’re not sure what you’re looking for in a therapist, this could feel overwhelming. Other online therapy platforms often offer matching services to avoid this.

How is Grow Therapy different from BetterHelp?

Click here to open the answer container. Click here to close the answer container.

Grow Therapy is different from BetterHelp in a few distinct ways: First, BetterHelp is a monthly subscription service, while users pay per session for their therapy or psychiatry appointments on Grow. Second, BetterHelp automatically matches you with a therapist after you fill out some paperwork, while Grow Therapy has you select your own provider from its directory. The “extras” on each platform are different as well, with Grow providing an AI chatbot named Coach and several worksheets, while Betterhelp offers a journaling space and free group sessions.

Which is better, Grow Therapy or Headway?

Click here to open the answer container. Click here to close the answer container.

Generally speaking, Grow Therapy will likely be a better choice for many, as it currently has more providers and takes more insurance plans. However, if Headway is in-network with your insurance and you find a provider you like on that platform, the two companies are pretty similar.

Can I Switch to a New Provider on Grow Therapy?

Click here to open the answer container. Click here to close the answer container.

Yes, you can switch providers at any time. It is always recommended you let your current provider know you will be switching. To switch providers, all you need to do is select a new one from the directory, or you can call to get assistance.

Who Is Eligible for Medication With Grow Therapy?

Click here to open the answer container. Click here to close the answer container.

Medication can be prescribed to those six years and older. For kids and teens seeking medication management, it is vitally important for parents to be involved with the process. Providers may choose to not medication those under a certain age and instead suggest therapy as a first option.

Any medications your provider deems necessary will be sent to your local pharmacy. You will be able to pick it up when it is convenient for you and you will pay your co-pay for medications or an out-of-pocket cost.
