What Is the Habitica App?

Habitica is a productivity and task management app that uses gamification to create habits and set goals. Habitica offers tons of customizations and community engagement to meet your unique needs and experience. There is a free version and premium version available, with subscriptions costing $4.99 -$47.99, depending on which subscription you choose.

Habitica Review 2023

Habitica’s dashboard homepage has habits, “dailies”, to do’s, and rewards. All of these features are available in the free version which means you will not need to sign up for premium to use them.

Habits, such as improving bedtime routine or drinking more water, can be customized or imported from challenges that you can enroll in. “Dailies” are more like everyday tasks like, working out, brushing your teeth, and making your bed. Much like habits, you can add “dailies” from the challenges you can sign-up for. Your to-do list acts just like a regular task list, which helps you stay focused on deadlines and ongoing projects. The rewards section shows which rewards you have earned by completing habits, dailies, and to-do’s.

Habitica specializes in gamification where you can gain experience points (XP) and turns tasks and habits into a fun and engaging experience. This can be helpful for your mental health because it adds enjoyment and motivation to your day through earning rewards and leveling up. You will feel a sense of accomplishment when you complete things in the app and this will boost your confidence and reduce task-related stress.

The social and community aspect of Habitica, like joining groups and challenges, helps to provide support and a sense of belonging, which can also be beneficial for mental wellbeing. You can even build new groups through the use of quests and guilds in the app. Habitica’s gamification elements make daily tasks and habits fun while adding structure to your routines, goals, and productivity.

Those Cutting Down Screen Time or A Gaming Addiction

The biggest attraction to Habitica is the gamification aspect, however, those who struggle with gaming addiction or excessive screen time will want to use caution with Habitica. Habitica’s intended purpose is to help individuals develop healthier habits and boost productivity. It may be helpful to try a more robust task management app to reduce risk.

If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, consider speaking to a licensed professional from an online therapist directory or reviewing the Best Online Therapy Buyer’s Guide to connect with a therapist for virtual appointments.

Limited Internet Access

Habitica is available on mobile and desktop, but relies heavily on internet access to properly function. Individuals with limited access to the internet would benefit from productivity apps that can be used offline, such as the phone’s native reminders or tasks features. Traditional methods of using a paper planner or sticky notes may also be the most reliable for those with limited access.

Rating:
Overall rating of 4 out of 5 possible.

Habitica and RescueTime both focus on setting goals, tracking progress, and increasing your time management skills. Both apps have desktop and mobile versions available with additional app or tool integration. Habitica focuses on gamifying tasks while RescueTime emphasizes the user’s time spent on devices and runs automatically. RescueTime increases awareness of time blindness which is a common symptom for ADHD.

In terms of costs, Habitica and RescueTime both offer a free version and a premium version. RescueTime’s monthly subscription is $12 monthly or $78 annually and offers tools, such as calendar integration, history reports, and time blocking features. RescueTime may be better suited for individuals who are unaware of how much time they spend on non-work related tasks and seems more geared toward professionals. Habitica feels much more game-like with a community support aspect that helps motivate and encourage users to keep going.

Final Verdict

Headshot Lena Suarez Angelino-- LCSW Lena Suarez-Angelino, LCSW
Habitica has so much to explore, that even as I completed this review there were some features I had yet to experience. Due to how many layers and capabilities the app offers, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed when using Habitica at first – it feels like there is so much to learn and maintain on a regular basis. To create healthy habits, you really need consistency in order to be successful and Habitica helps through turning “boring tasks” into a fun game.

While the monthly subscription to Habitica is affordable in comparison to other productivity apps, there may not be a need to pay for a subscription with how much is available for free. Overall, I feel Habitica’s gamification elements make it a helpful tool for people with ADHD or those who have symptoms of executive dysfunction as the app adds fun and structure to their daily routines, goals, and productivity.
