Why You Can Trust My Review
Choosing Therapy has collectively spent hundreds of hours testing and using online mental health services firsthand. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the deputy executive director of Person-Centered Care Services. I reviewed Octave and took a deep dive into everything they have to offer. During my time reviewing Octave, they scored highest in the “Clientele Served” because of their wide range of therapy types offered. However, Octave isn’t available nationwide and you don’t get to pick your own therapist which are major drawbacks.

Octave Individual Therapy
Live therapy sessions with Octave typically last around 45 minutes to an hour. The frequency of sessions varies based on individual needs and therapy goals, with many individuals attending sessions weekly or bi-weekly.

This could be a parent, guardian, or any other family member who recognizes the need for support and seeks assistance in fostering healthier family dynamics. Octave operates on a pay-per-session basis and accepts many insurance plans. BetterHelp might be a better option if you don’t have insurance as its cash-pay prices are more affordable than Octave, but they don’t offer family therapy. Talkspace accepts many insurance plans, so if you’re not in-network with Octave, you should check Talkspace, as well. Talkspace is the best option of the three if you also need medication management.

Who May Want an Alternative to Octave?
While Octave is a great option for many individuals seeking mental health support, certain groups may require alternatives. Those seeking in-person treatment, specialized therapy, or medication management will want to look for other platforms.
Individuals Looking for In-Person or Specialized Therapy
Octave only offers virtual therapy services, which may not be suitable for those who prefer or require face-to-face interactions with their therapist. Additionally, while Octave’s therapists offer a wide range of expertise, individuals seeking specialized therapy modalities must seek an alternative platform.
Thriveworks is an online mental health platform that also offers in-person care in select cities. Learn more in our full review of Thriveworks.
Those Seeking Medication Management
While Octave offers therapy services, it does not provide direct medication management. Individuals in need of medication management alongside therapy may need to explore other options, such as seeking a psychiatrist or a platform that offers integrated therapy and medication management services.
Talkiatry is always our first choice for online psychiatry, but they are only available for those who are in-network. If you’re looking for cash-pay psychiatry, Brightside Health is the most affordable we’ve found.
