Concerta and Adderall are both stimulant medications that are used to treat symptoms of ADHD. Since they are in the same class of medications, they have similar side effects and can both be effective treatments. Which medication is more effective depends on the person being treated and how they respond to the medication along with their individual factors that can change treatment outcomes.
How Are Concerta & Adderall Similar?
Concerta and Adderall are two medications commonly used to manage attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). They are also known by their generic names, methylphenidate and amphetamine salts/dextroamphetamine, respectively. Both medications modulate the amount of dopamine and norepinephrine in your brain, leaving more for the body to use to manage ADHD symptoms. Generally, the two medications are to help with ADHD symptoms like hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention.
Both Concerta and Adderall are stimulant medications that work on the central nervous system, thus resulting in many similar side effects. They are medications that have a high potential for abuse and dependence, so they are well-regulated to prevent addiction and abuse from happening. Doctors and psychiatrists often are the ones to prescribe these medications and have to file paperwork with the government to give them authorization to prescribe these medications.1,2,3,4
Similarities between Concerta & Adderall include that they are both:
- Side Effects: Abdominal pain/stomach ache, decreased appetite, feelings of nervousness, agitation, dizziness, insomnia, anxiety, dry mouth, headache.
- Schedule of medication: Concerta and Adderall are classified as Schedule II medications which means that they both have high potential for abuse and dependence.
- Type of medication: They are both central nervous system stimulant medications.
- FDA indication: Both are used to treat ADHD.
- Increase of chemicals: These medications are similar in that the end result of them working is that there are more neurotransmitters – dopamine and norepinephrine- available for the body to use to manage symptoms.
- Formulation: Both medications have extended-release formulations available, meaning that people can take this medication only once daily with or without other medications to help with the symptoms.

No two people are the same, so what may look right for one person may not be appropriate for another. If seeing a doctor in person is a barrier for you, then you may need to consider online psychiatry services. The Relationship Between OCD and ADHD
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common mental health condition, affecting around 1 in 10 children and 1 in 20 adults. According to the fifth edition of the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM-V), ADHD is characterized by “a persistent pattern of inattention or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development.” For example, a child with ADHD may struggle to pay attention to details, follow instructions, or sit still in situations where moving around would be inappropriate to such a severe degree that they’re unable to complete tasks at school or develop normal social relationships.
