What Is Transcendental Meditation?

Transcendental meditation (TM) involves sitting comfortably with eyes closed and silently repeating a mantra, which is a word or phrase, for 20 minutes twice a day to achieve inner peace. TM meditation was developed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the 1950s based on ancient Vedic practices from India.

Transcendental Meditation Vs. Mindfulness

People often confuse transcendental meditation with mindfulness. TM meditation is considered a passive process where repeating a mantra helps the mind transcend your thoughts. Mindfulness, on the other hand, is rooted in Buddhist philosophy and involves cultivating awareness of the present moment. Whereas with mindfulness, when your mind wanders, you need to actively refocus your awareness on the present moment.

How Does TM Differ From Other Types of Meditation?

Some key differences between transcendental meditation and other types of meditation include its effortless nature, the use of a mantra, and its consistent practice schedule. While other types of meditation may involve more concentration or control of the mind, TM meditation allows the mind to naturally settle into a state of deep relaxation and inner peace.

What Is the Mantra in Transcendental Meditation?

A mantra is a word or sound that is repeated during meditation to help the person practicing to achieve focus and relaxation. In TM meditation, the mantra is a sound or a series of sounds that are chosen based on the person’s needs and preferences. The mantras used in TM meditation are typically Sanskrit words or syllables that are used to clear the mind of distracting thoughts and have a calming effect on the mind and body.

The mantras used in TM meditation are not random but are selected by a trained TM meditation teacher based on the person’s age, gender, and personality. This is because the person’s needs and preferences can influence the effectiveness of the mantra. Choosing the right mantra is a crucial part of TM meditation, and it is designed to help the practitioner achieve deep relaxation and a state of inner peace.

How was Transcendental Meditation Developed?

Transcendental meditation originated in India in the 1950s and was developed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who was a disciple of Swami Brahmananda Saraswati. In 1955, Maharishi founded the Spiritual Regeneration Movement, which was aimed at spreading the practice of meditation to the masses. He traveled to different countries, holding lectures and seminars and teaching people the power of transcendental meditation.

Maharishi developed the practice of transcendental meditation to create a meditation practice that was easy, accessible, and could be practiced by anyone, regardless of their age or background. He believed that meditation could be used to counteract the negative effects of modern life, such as stress and anxiety, and that it could help people to develop their full potential and achieve a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Benefits of Transcendental Meditation

Transcendental Meditation has been shown to have numerous benefits for both the mind and body, from reducing stress and anxiety to improving overall health and well-being. Unlike other forms of meditation, TM meditation doesn’t require the person to concentrate and can be practiced by anyone once they receive the proper instruction, regardless of their age or experience with meditation.

Here are seven benefits of transcendental meditation:

1. Decreased Stress

Since transcendental meditation works by allowing the mind to settle down and become more aware of the present moment, it helps to reduce stress by activating the relaxation response in the body. The relaxation response is the opposite of the fight or flight response, which is triggered when a person is stressed.

Stress is an inevitable aspect of our daily lives. Transcendental meditation can help with stress management and improve overall mental health as you experience a deep state of relaxation. Because transcendental meditation has powerful stress-relieving capabilities, it is often integrated into therapy or combined with therapy. When used in conjunction with therapy, it can provide the motivation and desire to make changes.

2. Reduced Anxiety

Transcendental meditation is a promising therapy for people with anxiety disorders as it helps people relax, improve cognitive function, develop a more positive outlook on life, manage physical symptoms, and provide a sense of community and support. As a meditation for anxiety, TM meditation can help to reduce symptoms of anxiety by slowing down the heart rate and breathing, thereby reducing their overall sense of anxiety.1

Research shows that transcendental meditation is more effective than treatment as usual and most alternative treatments, especially for people with high anxiety.2

3. Improved Mental Focus

Transcendental meditation can help improve mental focus by slowing down brain activity, enabling people to focus better. Mental focus is the ability to concentrate and pay attention to a specific task or activity or to control our mind’s wandering thoughts. Mental focus is an essential aspect of sports, academics, and work.

By repeating a mantra, people can clear their minds of distractions and enter into a deep state of relaxation where they can focus on the present moment. It also improves their working memory and decision-making skills, leading to better mental focus. TM meditation also helps those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) concentrate better. A pilot study showed that three months of transcendental meditation caused significant improvement in ADHD symptoms for a group of middle school students.3

4. Increased Brain Plasticity

Brain plasticity refers to the brain’s ability to change and adapt in response to experience and learning. This ability, also called neuroplasticity, allows the brain to form new connections and pathways, strengthen existing ones, and even reorganize itself in response to injury or disease.

Research shows that practicing TM meditation can cause an increase in brain plasticity in a number of ways. Increased brain plasticity has been linked to a number of cognitive benefits, including improved memory, attention, and creativity. It also plays an important role in recovery from brain injury, disease, and age-related cognitive decline.4 TM meditation is a valuable tool for those looking to improve their mental and emotional well-being and enhance their cognitive abilities.

5. Improved Relationships

Transcendental meditation can also have a significant impact on relationships as it can help partners achieve a deeper level of understanding and compassion towards each other. Because TM meditation can reduce stress, when you and your partner are less stressed, you will naturally be more patient, empathetic, and communicative. By doing so, you are able to deal with disagreements and resolve conflicts with a level head and a clear mind.

When we are in a state of deep relaxation, we can more easily access our intuition and inner guidance, which can help us gain insight into our partner’s perspective. Practicing transcendental meditation together can create a shared sense of peace and harmony that strengthens the bond between partners. It also fosters a sense of gratitude for each other that promotes love and appreciation, which can ultimately improve the quality and longevity of the relationship.

6. Better Sleep

Sleep is an essential part of mental health and overall well-being. Many people struggle with getting enough quality sleep. Studies on the effects of TM meditation on sleep have been encouraging. One study introduced high school students to transcendental meditation and found that the majority of students (79%) experienced improved sleep quality.5

One theory on why TM meditation may improve sleep is that it promotes a state of relaxation, which can help reduce stress and tension in the body. This, in turn, can help the body to enter a more restful state of sleep. By promoting relaxation and reducing stress, transcendental meditation may help people fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and wake up feeling more refreshed.

7. Manage Post-traumatic stress disorder

Transcendental meditation can help to reduce the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A recent study showed TM meditation reduced symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in veterans.6 In addition to reducing anxiety and depression, Practitioners of TM report feeling a sense of calm, relaxation, and increased focus during and after practicing the technique. All of this research suggests that TM is a great addition to comprehensive treatment plans for PTSD.

How Can I Learn Transcendental Meditation?

Transcendental meditation differs from other meditation techniques as it cannot be self-taught, Rather, learning transcendental meditation requires taking a seven-step course from a certified instructor. This is because the practice involves the use of a mantra, requires personalized guidance, and has a rich history and philosophy behind it. The seven-step course involves two lectures to gain insight into TM and four days of practicing the technique for two hours daily.

While it may seem like a hassle to seek out a certified instructor, the benefits of learning TM meditation from a trained professional far outweigh any inconvenience. The guidance provided by a certified TM meditation instructor can help ensure that you get the most out of your practice and enjoy the full range of benefits that TM meditation offers.

How Much Do TM Meditation Courses Cost?

The cost of transcendental meditation varies depending on several factors, such as the country, the teacher, and the course length. In the United States, the cost of the training program can range between $960 to $1,500. However, in India, the cost of TM meditation is much less expensive. Because teachers want the practice to be as accessible, some organizations include a sliding fee scale or scholarships.

Keep in mind that it is a one-time investment, as once you have learned the technique, you are free to use it for the rest of your life. The cost of TM meditation includes the instruction fee and the follow-up programs that TM meditation instructors offer to ensure that practitioners continue to meditate regularly. Additionally, many people attend retreats or other mindfulness courses to enhance their practice.

Can I Teach Myself Transcendental Meditation?

Historically, TM meditation has been taught through a one-on-one course with a certified TM meditation teacher. These classes are designed to teach somebody the proper technique of TM meditation and to ensure that they practice it correctly. Many TM teachers offer free introductory talks, which can help you gain a better understanding of the technique.

In addition to in-person courses, there are also online courses and apps that teach the TM technique. These courses are convenient, as you can learn from the comfort of your own home. However, ensuring that the course or app is reputable and certified by the Transcendental Meditation Program is important.

How to Start a Transcendental Meditation Practice

A simple way to start a meditation practice is simply to find a meditation app or even find a meditation YouTube channel. It’s like having an instructor in your living room. And if you are having difficulty learning to meditate, you can use an online therapy directory to find a therapist specializing in mindfulness.

If transcendental meditation is outside your price range or time commitment ability, there are other ways to reap the benefits of meditation. Other forms of meditation may use visualizations during the meditation practice. Meditation is accessible to us all, and it is available for free.

In My Experience

Transcendental meditation is a powerful form of meditation because of the reasons I’ve outlined here. Decreased anxiety and stress, increased well-being, and possible memory consolidation are just a few.7

Meditation is something I bring up with my clients during our sessions because it has worked for me. As I began to practice yoga and meditation more regularly, I noticed powerful changes. My mode of operation shifted from manic to more mindful and from constant flight to more groundedness. I became less stressed and calmer, less reactive and more intentional as I connected with the peace and serenity that was available from deep within myself. As I became more present, virtually all of my relationships were improving and deepening.
