At a glance
  • Yes. NOCD is a real OCD-specialty therapy company: licensed ERP-trained therapists in all 50 states, two peer-reviewed outcome studies in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, about $85 million raised from investors including Cigna Ventures and Kaiser Permanente Ventures, and no regulator action found.
  • The documented complaints center on billing timing: insurers take 4 to 6 weeks to process claims, and copays can arrive months late in one lump.
  • Trustpilot shows zero NOCD reviews; the profile has never collected any. BBB rates it A+ with 20 complaints closed in three years.

NOCD (treatmyocd.com) treats obsessive-compulsive disorder using exposure and response prevention (ERP). ERP is considered the gold standard treatment for OCD, and it is delivered over video with app support between sessions. Stephen Smith co-founded the program in 2014 after his own severe OCD began in college. The company operates from Chicago and reports holding more than 50,000 therapy sessions a month across all 50 states.

The company behind NOCD

NOCD has raised about $85 million across five funding rounds. Its investors include Cigna Ventures, Kaiser Permanente Ventures, 7wireVentures, and F-Prime Capital.1 Cigna and Kaiser also cover NOCD treatment through some of their health plans.

The company has also expanded recently. In January 2026, NOCD launched a parent company called Noto and acquired Rebound Health, which focuses on trauma treatment. NOCD itself still operates under its own name and remains focused on OCD care.2

NOCD is also listed in the International OCD Foundation’s clinic directory. Providers listed there must meet the organization’s requirements around licensure and training in behavioral therapy.

The therapy and the evidence

NOCD’s therapists are licensed, vetted clinicians. They receive ERP training and participate in consultation with clinical leadership. That leadership is named and credentialed: Patrick McGrath, PhD, as Chief Clinical Officer, and Jamie Feusner, MD, a psychiatry professor who formerly directed UCLA’s OCD Intensive Treatment Program, as Chief Medical Officer, with a published scientific advisory board of OCD researchers behind them.

There is also some research on NOCD’s outcomes. A 2022 study looked at more than 3,500 NOCD members and found that OCD symptoms decreased by more than 43 percent. A 2025 study of 2,173 children and adolescents found about a 40 percent reduction in symptoms.3

Of course, there are some limitations to keep in mind. While the studies were peer-reviewed, both of them looked back at existing patient data rather than using randomized trials, and some of the authors were affiliated with NOCD.

On its website, NOCD indicates that 74 percent of members see “significant results” and that treatment works “twice as fast as standard ERP.” But those are NOCD’s descriptions of the research rather than conclusions stated that way in the studies themselves.

The legal and regulatory record for NOCD

We also looked for any major legal or regulatory issues involving NOCD. As of August 29, 2026, we found no FTC enforcement actions, state attorney general actions, settlements, or consumer lawsuits against the company. The only federal case we found involving NOCD was one filed by NOCD itself.

That doesn’t guarantee there have never been complaints or legal issues. But NOCD has not been part of the recent FTC actions against other online mental health companies, including BetterHelp and Cerebral.4

Privacy concerns and NOCD’s response

NOCD did face some criticism over privacy in 2022. Mozilla’s Privacy Not Included guide raised concerns about how the company handled user data. NOCD pushed back strongly, calling one of Mozilla’s claims “completely false.” It said that therapy notes messages with therapists are never shared and that health plans only receive information needed to process claims.5

Mozilla later updated its review and noted that NOCD had improved its privacy practices and met its minimum security standards. We also found no reported NOCD data breach or federal privacy action. And when other mental health platforms came under scrutiny for their use of tracking pixels, NOCD was not among the companies named.

Where NOCD gets complaints

Most complaints about NOCD involve billing. The Better Business Bureau gives NOCD an A+ rating and shows 20 complaints closed in the past three years, with recurring issues around delayed charges, unexpected bills, account closures, and problems with care.6 Similar stories show up on Reddit and in Forbes Health reviews, particularly from people who thought they owed one amount and were charged much more weeks or months later.7

Some of this appears tied to insurance delays. NOCD says claims can take four to six weeks to process, which means several copays may hit at once. It emails members before charging the card on file. Like with any healthcare need, if you use NOCD, it’s worth confirming your benefits directly with your insurer and keeping an eye on billing emails rather than assuming no charge means you owe nothing.

NOCD does offer payment plans and handles billing disputes and refunds through its support team. Members can also request a different therapist. Like many therapy practices, standard cancellation fees apply when appointments are canceled with less than 48 hours’ notice.

There aren’t currently any NOCD reviews on Trustpilot. Its app ratings are much stronger: 4.9 stars on Apple’s App Store and 4.8 on Google Play.

What people like about NOCD

The therapists get a lot of the praise. People on Reddit describe finding therapists who really understand OCD and know how to do ERP well. This can be a big deal for people who have previously worked with therapists without much OCD-specific training.

Some reviewers talk about finally feeling understood or learning concrete ways to respond differently to their obsessions and compulsions. The match isn’t always perfect, which is true for any mental health provider, but members can switch therapists if someone isn’t working for them.

Who is NOCD best for?

NOCD is intended for people who want specialized OCD treatment. It can be a good option if you don’t have an OCD specialist nearby or if you’ve tried general therapy and feel like you need someone who understands OCD more deeply. It may also appeal to people who prefer virtual care or want to use their insurance. Treatment is available throughout the U.S.

Keep in mind NOCD is not a general online therapy platform. If you’re looking for traditional talk therapy or medication management, you’ll probably be better served elsewhere. Our NOCD review goes deeper into what treatment is actually like, while Talkiatry offers psychiatry and medication management through insurance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is NOCD legit or a scam?

NOCD is a legitimate mental health company that has been around since 2014. It employs licensed therapists trained in ERP and has published peer-reviewed research on its treatment outcomes. It has currently raised about $85 million from investors that include Cigna Ventures and Kaiser Permanente Ventures.

We also found no regulatory actions or settlements against the company. People online calling NOCD a “scam” appear to be more frustrated with billing than any specific clinical concerns.

Is NOCD good?

If you have OCD and want ERP, there’s quite a bit in NOCD’s favor. Research on the platform shows meaningful reductions in OCD symptoms, and its app has a 4.9-star rating on Apple and 4.8 stars on Google Play.

Of course, that doesn’t mean everyone has a good experience. Therapist fit varies, and billing is the biggest problem that comes up in complaints. But complaints about the actual therapy were less consistent than complaints about insurance and billing.

Our guide to whether OCD can be cured explains more about what you can realistically expect from OCD treatment over time.

Is NOCD therapy covered by insurance?

NOCD works with insurance and is in-network with many major plans, including some plans from Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Kaiser Permanente, and Blue Cross Blue Shield. Coverage varies by plan and location. NOCD offers private pay rates at $240 for a 60-minute session with payment plans available.

Why does NOCD have no Trustpilot reviews?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Its Trustpilot profile has never collected reviews. Volume sits in the app stores (4.9 Apple, 4.8 Google Play), on BBB, and in Reddit’s OCD community.

Are NOCD therapists real licensed therapists?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Yes. NOCD therapists are licensed clinicians who receive additional training in ERP. NOCD is also listed in the International OCD Foundation’s directory, which has requirements around provider licensure and OCD treatment training.

As with any therapy platform, credentials don’t guarantee that every therapist will be a good fit. If the first person you’re matched with doesn’t feel right, NOCD allows you to request someone else.

Does NOCD sell your data?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

This question came up after Mozilla raised concerns about the company’s privacy practices in 2022.

NOCD claims it does not sell members’ clinical information. NOCD disputed some of Mozilla’s findings and said therapy information is not shared with outside companies.

Mozilla later updated its review and noted improvements to NOCD’s privacy practices. We have not found a reported data breach or federal privacy enforcement action involving NOCD.

Who owns NOCD?

NOCD now operates under Noto, a parent company created in January 2026. Founder Stephen Smith is still the CEO.
