Which Online Therapy Service Is Right for Me? Quiz

Published: October 27, 2026

Not sure which online therapy service to choose? Answer five quick questions and we will match you with the two or three that fit you best.

The quiz looks at four things that decide which services can actually help you: whether you want talk therapy, medication or both, who the care is for, how you will pay, and where you live. Every service it suggests has been tested and reviewed by our team, and each result links to the full review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which online therapy service is best for me?

The best online therapy service for you is the one that offers the type of care you want, treats someone your age, takes the way you plan to pay and is licensed in your state. For most adults with anxiety or depression and insurance, that points to a service that is in network with major plans, such as Talkspace, Brightside Health, Rula or Grow Therapy. For self-pay, BetterHelp and Online-Therapy.com are the usual starting points. The quiz above applies those four checks for you.

How does the quiz choose the services it shows?

The quiz checks each answer against facts from our reviews: what the service offers, who it treats, which insurance it accepts and where it is licensed. A service that fails a hard fact, such as not treating teenagers, is left out. A service that fits with a condition, such as Medicaid in some states only, is shown with that condition marked. Among the services that fit, we show the ones our reviewers rated highest. ChoosingTherapy.com may earn a commission when you sign up through a link on this page, and that never changes which services you are shown.

Should I choose online therapy or online psychiatry?

Choose online therapy if you want to talk through what is going on with a licensed therapist, and online psychiatry if you want an assessment for medication. Several services offer both under one account, including Talkspace, Brightside Health, Rula, Grow Therapy and Talkiatry, which is the simplest option if you are not sure yet or may want both.

Does insurance cover online therapy?

Often, yes. Talkspace, Brightside Health, Rula, Grow Therapy, Talkiatry and Thriveworks are in network with many commercial plans, and some accept Medicare or Medicaid in certain states. BetterHelp works mainly on a self-pay basis. Coverage depends on your plan and state, so confirm with the service before your first appointment.

How much does online therapy cost without insurance?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Self-pay online therapy runs from about $240 to $440 a month for subscription services such as BetterHelp, Talkspace and Online-Therapy.com, or $75 to $250 a session on per-session platforms such as Grow Therapy and Rula, as of October 2026. Online psychiatry without insurance usually costs $95 to $200 a month for medication management.

Can I get medication through online therapy?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Yes, through the services that offer psychiatry alongside therapy, including Talkspace, Brightside Health, Rula, Grow Therapy and Talkiatry. Controlled medications such as stimulants for ADHD are prescribed online by fewer services and only in states that allow it; Talkiatry and Klarity are the usual options there. Benzodiazepines are rarely prescribed online.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

For common concerns such as anxiety and depression, studies comparing video therapy with in-person therapy have found similar results, and the biggest factor is the fit with your therapist rather than the format. In-person care is a better choice for severe symptoms, a crisis, or when you need a higher level of support than weekly sessions.

Can the quiz confirm that my insurance plan is in network?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

No. The quiz knows which services accept insurance in general, not whether your specific plan is in network in your state. Check that on the service’s own site, or by calling the number on your insurance card, before your first appointment.

What if no service fits my answers?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

If no service meets every answer, the quiz shows the two closest options and marks the one condition each one misses, such as not taking Medicaid or a minimum age of 18. Changing the payment option is the most common fix. You can also browse every service we have reviewed on our online therapy reviews page.

Is this quiz a diagnosis or medical advice?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

No. The quiz matches your preferences to facts about services; it does not assess your symptoms or diagnose anything. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
