Is Regain part of BetterHelp?
Regain’s Terms and Conditions identify BetterHelp as its owner and operator, with the same San Jose address and contact email. 1 Both the US App Store and Google Play list BetterHelp as the Regain app’s developer.
Teladoc Health, traded on the New York Stock Exchange as TDOC, completed its purchase of BetterHelp on January 23, 2015. BetterHelp has been a wholly owned subsidiary since then, making Regain part of the same corporate group. 2
Regain also loads site files from BetterHelp’s domains, and both sites list the same HITRUST r2 security certification.
The FTC privacy case
The Federal Trade Commission’s case against BetterHelp listed Regain among the names the company does business under. 3 In July 2023, the FTC finalized an order requiring BetterHelp to pay $7.8 million and banning it from sharing health data for advertising. Regain customers were included in the refund program. [9, 12]

When should you choose Regain?
Regain is designed for two people working with one therapist. Common reasons for seeking help include communication problems, frequent conflict, infidelity, and disagreements about money, children, or in-laws.
- Both partners can attend sessions. Each can join video or phone appointments from their own device, with one shared account and message thread.
- A partner can be invited later. Signup lets you begin alone and decide later whether to send an invitation through account settings.
- Relationship counseling is not limited to romantic partners. Regain uses “partner” to mean the person attending therapy with you, although therapists’ experience with different pairings varies.
- One subscription covers both people. On BetterHelp, each person would need a separate individual subscription, and sessions would not be joint.
See your Regain price and start the questionnaire. The 20% first-month discount applies automatically.
When should you choose BetterHelp?
BetterHelp offers individual therapy, insurance billing, and access to a separate psychiatry service. Regain does not offer insurance billing or psychiatry.
- Individual sessions can address relationship concerns. BetterHelp therapists list relationships among their specialties, so you can work on a marriage or breakup without your partner attending.
- Selected insurance plans are accepted. These include some Aetna, Cigna, Anthem, and Optum plans, depending on your state and network. BetterHelp does not accept Medicaid, Medicare, or TRICARE.
- Psychiatry is available through UpLift for adults nationwide. This is separate from BetterHelp’s therapy service.
- Live chat provides another way to meet. The subscription also includes one group session a week, a journal, and worksheets.
- Financial aid may reduce the cost. BetterHelp considers factors such as income and employment status when determining eligibility.

How much do Regain and BetterHelp cost?
Regain’s published US price is $60 to $90 a week, compared with $70 to $100 for BetterHelp. Regain costs $10 less at each end of the range, and its fee covers two people. Your exact price depends on your location, preferences, and therapist availability. [4, 5]
Over four weeks, those rates total $240 to $360 for Regain and $280 to $400 for BetterHelp. These are four-week comparisons rather than calendar-month prices.
First-month discounts
With 20% off, Regain’s first four-week period costs $192 to $288 instead of $240 to $360. BetterHelp’s equivalent four-week cost falls to $224 to $320 instead of $280 to $400.
Our BetterHelp discount code page explains its introductory offer.
Billing and cancellation
Regain’s US app store listings describe billing every four weeks. Its terms also allow weekly or quarterly billing, with automatic renewal until canceled. 1 BetterHelp bills weekly or monthly and does not charge your card until you are matched.
On both platforms, unused sessions expire at the end of the billing cycle. Cancel before the renewal date to avoid the next charge.
Does insurance cover Regain or BetterHelp?
Regain does not accept insurance or work with insurance companies. 4 BetterHelp reports working with more than 125 plans and expanding insurance availability to all 50 states and D.C. in mid-2026. Its coverage applies to individual therapy and psychiatry, not joint couples sessions.
BetterHelp’s network includes selected plans, not every policy from each insurer. Coverage depends on your state, plan, and network. Its terms make you responsible for the full cost of a denied claim.
Selecting “Couples” on BetterHelp’s insurance page redirects to Regain, just as it does on the homepage. Couples seeking insurance-covered joint sessions need to check another service, such as Talkspace, and confirm their specific benefits.
How do sessions and messages work?
Regain’s shared account
Both partners and the therapist share one account, and every written message is visible to all three. Either partner can also book an individual live session with the therapist. Video and phone appointments typically last 30 to 45 minutes.
Some couples say in reviews that 45 minutes feels too short for three people. Users also report being unable to transfer a joint account to a new partner after a breakup. Some say they were told to open a new account with a different email address.
BetterHelp’s individual sessions
BetterHelp’s live sessions are one-on-one and typically last 30 to 45 minutes each week. You can choose video, phone, or live chat and switch formats. Messaging takes place in a private thread with your therapist.
You can maintain an individual BetterHelp account alongside a joint Regain account. They are separate subscriptions, with separate charges.
Do Regain or BetterHelp offer medication management?
Regain says its service does not provide official diagnoses, prescriptions, or court-ordered therapy. It has no psychiatry service. 4
BetterHelp’s therapists do not prescribe medication either. However, its separate psychiatry service through UpLift is available to adults nationwide, with an average copay of $26 per session for eligible members. 5
The psychiatry service does not prescribe controlled substances, including stimulants. A partner who needs medication management can use it through their own account while attending couples sessions on Regain.

What do users say about Regain and BetterHelp?
Review-platform and app ratings
As of September 2026, Regain had a 2.3 TrustScore from 385 Trustpilot reviews. Of those reviews, 43% gave five stars and 50% gave one star. 6 BetterHelp had a 3.8 TrustScore from 9,697 reviews. 7
Both apps scored 4.8 on the US App Store. Regain also had a 4.2 rating on Google Play.
Regain feedback
Regain’s one-star reviews frequently concern billing, including charges continuing after a couple stopped attending, charges before a therapist was assigned, and slow support. Some describe therapist no-shows or matches with therapists many time zones away.
Five-star reviews praise easy setup, shared messaging, and therapists who helped with marital problems. In public responses, Regain states that membership charges continue on an ongoing basis.
BetterHelp feedback
BetterHelp reviewers praise convenient scheduling and the range of therapists. Common complaints include unexpected charges and slow support.
Both subscriptions renew automatically. Stopping sessions does not cancel the subscription, so note your renewal date and cancel in Payment settings before it to avoid another charge.
What are your options if neither platform fits?
Couples therapy with insurance
Neither Regain nor BetterHelp bills insurance for joint couples therapy. Talkspace advertises insurance coverage for couples therapy, and its couples page lists Cigna, Aetna, Optum, Anthem, and Medicare. 8 Confirm that your specific plan covers joint sessions before booking.
Without insurance, Talkspace lists its couples plan at $436 a month, advertised as $109 a week. It includes four live sessions and messaging. Check whether your plan covers Talkspace.
Care these platforms do not provide
Regain says it is not appropriate for people in physically abusive relationships or those worried about their safety. It also excludes court-ordered therapy and urgent crises.
BetterHelp directs teens to TeenCounseling, and neither BetterHelp nor Regain offers family therapy.
If you are thinking about suicide or feel unsafe, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. For an emergency, call 911.
For couples paying out of pocket, start Regain’s questionnaire. For individual therapy, with or without insurance, take BetterHelp’s matching quiz.
