At a glance
  • Claims, ERAs, superbills and a good faith estimate template in one subscription: SimplePractice, $49 to $99 a month, with ERAs free and claims at $0.39 each from 1 October 2026.
  • Lowest bill for a solo practice filing 40 claims a month: Sessions Health at $49.00, compared with $80.20 on TherapyNotes and $94.60 on SimplePractice Essential.
  • Lowest per-check eligibility fees: TherapyNotes at 14 cents and Sessions Health at 15 cents. TheraNest Advanced includes 50 checks a month. SimplePractice offers them only through Insurance Navigator at $1.79 a claim.

The monthly plan price is only part of what you’ll pay for mental health billing software. Claim fees, eligibility checks and card payments add to the total. If you also want AI session notes, our Upheal pricing guide covers what those cost per session. For a practice filing 40 claims a month, the cheapest and most expensive built-in options below differ by $45.60. For the codes, modifiers and filing rules behind those claims, see our guide to billing for mental health services.

Most therapists use the billing tools in their electronic health record (EHR), which also holds their notes and calendar. These tools send claims to insurers through a clearinghouse, post the electronic remittance advice (ERA) that comes back, and charge client cards.

SimplePractice is one mental health EHR with billing built in. It ended free monthly claims on 1 October 2026 and now charges for every claim it submits. 1

Quick picks

This ranking puts products that handle the most billing work in one subscription first, then compares price. Products that require a separately billed clearinghouse rank lower because you need to manage two accounts.

  • SimplePractice: claims, ERAs, superbills and good faith estimates in one place.
  • Sessions Health: the lowest monthly bill at solo volume.
  • TherapyNotes: the lowest per-transaction fees, 14 cents each.
  • TheraNest (Ensora Health): unlimited claims and eligibility checks on Premier.
  • Jane: multidisciplinary clinics willing to add a Claim.MD account.
  • Healthie: a choice of Claim.MD or Office Ally.
  • Practice Better: wellness practices that bill insurance occasionally.
  • Carepatron: low plan prices, with claims from $0.25.

How do mental health billing fees compare?

Mental health billing software, ranked

1. SimplePractice

SimplePractice includes Insurance Essentials billing on every plan. It files primary and secondary electronic claims, enrolls you for ERAs at no charge, and flags a missing diagnosis, CPT code or location before submission. ERAs post payments and update claim statuses automatically. Secondary claims fill in from the primary, and superbills can run monthly. Claim rule automations and a corrected-claim workflow are also included.

From 1 October 2026, the first 250 claims a month cost $0.39 each, falling in steps to $0.33 after 1,000. Manual status checks cost $0.15 on Starter and Essential and remain free on Plus until next year. Claims you download and file elsewhere carry no fee.

Insurance Navigator costs $1.79 a claim and adds benefits verification, EOB autofill and phone access to insurance specialists. On October 12th, 2026, the support center listed it as available with a waitlist, while the pricing page still said coming soon. SimplePractice uses several clearinghouses but does not name them. Trustpilot rates it 2.8 out of 5 from 1,612 reviews. 2

2. Sessions Health

Sessions Health’s Professional plan costs $39 a month for unlimited clients, with extra practitioners at $29 each and a 30-day trial. Claims start at $0.25 and fall to $0.19 above 1,000 a month. Eligibility reports cost $0.15, and ERA posting comes with every claim.

It supports secondary claims, out-of-network courtesy billing and automated superbills, with no setup fees or monthly minimums. Practices leaving SimplePractice over fees name Sessions Health more often than any other product. Capterra rates it 4.9 out of 5 from 128 reviews. 3 A few users report unreliable built-in video.

3. TherapyNotes

TherapyNotes charges per billing transaction on top of its subscription. Solo costs $69 a month, while group plans cost $79 plus $50 per added clinician. Claims, eligibility requests and each claim in an ERA cost 14 cents. Paper claims cost $1.

Claims go through Claim.MD, with no separate subscription listed. Secondary claims follow once you post the primary ERA. Capterra rates TherapyNotes 4.7 out of 5 from 972 reviews. 3 TherapyNotes is not a ChoosingTherapy partner. Our SimplePractice vs. TherapyNotes comparison covers both systems in full.

4. TheraNest (now Ensora Health)

TheraNest belongs to Ensora Health, which runs its own clearinghouse, also known as ApexEDI. The $29 Essentials plan does not process claims. Advanced costs $59 and includes 50 claims and 50 eligibility checks per practice each month. After that, claims cost $0.23 and checks cost $0.25.

Premier costs $89 and makes both unlimited under a fair-usage policy. Payments cost 2.99% plus 30 cents and pay out within 30 minutes. The higher plans include one or two payer enrollments per therapist for credentialing.

Capterra rates TheraNest 4.4 from 1,056 reviews. 3 A June 2026 reviewer reported bugs after updates.

5. Jane

Jane serves clinics across many disciplines. US insurance billing costs $20 a month on top of the $79 Practice or $99 Thrive plan. The add-on covers eligibility checks, primary and secondary claims, and ERA posting.

Claims go through Claim.MD, which bills you separately with a 10% discount for Jane users. A solo therapist on Practice with Claim.MD Basic pays $126 a month before per-claim fees. Superbills come with every plan, so cash-pay practices can skip the add-on.

Some practices moved from SimplePractice to Jane for control over their own clearinghouse settings. Capterra rates Jane 4.8 from 536 reviews. 3

Compare Jane’s plans

6. Healthie

Healthie’s insurance tools start on Essentials at $49.99 a month, which adds superbills, CMS-1500 forms and Claim.MD. The $19.99 Core plan has none of these.

Claim.MD adds eligibility checks, batch claims and automated ERAs from $30 a month, with no Healthie markup. Plus at $129.99 adds Office Ally. Healthie’s feature table lists Claim.MD only for Plus and Group, while its help center says Essentials, so confirm access on your plan.

Cards cost 2.9% plus 30 cents. Capterra rates Healthie 4.4 from 125 reviews. 3

See Healthie’s plans

7. Practice Better

Practice Better serves nutrition, coaching and practices built around programs. Claim.MD is its only clearinghouse, available from the $35 Starter plan. Practice Better adds no claim fee, and eligibility checks run in the app once Claim.MD is linked.

Claim statuses sync about every 12 hours. Secondary insurance goes as coordination-of-benefits data on the primary claim. Any $0 payment shows as denied, including payments applied to deductibles. The 14-day trial requires a card.

Look at Practice Better’s plans

8. Carepatron

Carepatron files claims from $0.25 each on its $39 Advanced plan, with ERA recording and automatic status checks. The $31 Plus plan creates superbills.

Claims go through Claim.MD, but Carepatron’s pages do not say whether Claim.MD bills you separately. Ask before comparing totals. Cards cost 2.9% plus 60 cents. Capterra rates Carepatron 4.4 from 859 reviews. 3

What does a month of insurance billing cost?

These totals use the published fees for a solo therapist filing 40 claims a month, before card processing and CPT charges. TheraNest Advanced stays at its plan price because 40 claims fall within the 50 included.

  • Sessions Health: $39 + 40 x $0.25 = $49.00.
  • TheraNest Advanced: $59.00.
  • TherapyNotes Solo: $69 + 40 claims and 40 ERA lines at 14 cents each = $80.20.
  • SimplePractice Essential: $79 + 40 x $0.39 = $94.60.
  • Jane Practice with Claim.MD Basic: $126.00 before per-claim fees.

At 100 claims a month, SimplePractice Essential costs $118.00. A three-clinician Plus group filing 300 claims pays $363.00. Adding Navigator for a 40-claim solo practice raises monthly claim fees from $15.60 to $71.60.

Do you need a separate clearinghouse account?

Jane, Practice Better and Healthie require a separate Claim.MD account, which bills you directly. SimplePractice, TherapyNotes, Sessions Health and TheraNest include clearinghouse access in their own fees.

Claim.MD’s March 2026 price list showed Basic at $30 a month plus 30 cents per claim, ERA or eligibility check. Small Volume cost $60 with 100 of each, and Unlimited cost $120. There was no setup fee. Its live pricing page returned a not-found page in October 2026.

Users of several systems report that a claim marked as sent only means the clearinghouse accepted it. Practices still need to follow up on claims that remain unpaid after a month.

Which billing software handles good faith estimates?

SimplePractice, Jane and Healthie have documented ways to handle good faith estimates. SimplePractice includes a template on every plan. Since January 1st, 2022, state-licensed providers have had to give an estimate to every client who is uninsured or not submitting a claim and tell those clients they have a right to it. 4

SimplePractice’s template fills most fields from the client record. It requires your TIN but no client signature, and the wording cannot be edited.

On Jane’s Practice and Thrive plans, you complete a downloadable chart template with CPT and diagnosis codes, then upload the PDF to the client’s files. Healthie offers a form clients e-sign at intake, available on request by email. For the other products, ask the vendor.

Quote-only billing systems for larger practices

Several established systems do not publish claim fees, so you’ll need a sales quote to compare them.

Tebra, formerly Kareo, combines eligibility checks, claims, denial management and payment posting. Pricing is per provider, with a lower tier for fewer than 100 claims a month. Capterra rates Tebra 3.9 from 1,386 reviews. 3

Valant offers an integrated clearinghouse and eligibility checking, with pricing by quote. ICANotes costs $75 a month per non-prescribing clinician, with claims priced by sales. AdvancedMD lists mental health plans at $130 to $399 per provider a month.

When is SimplePractice the right billing software?

SimplePractice suits practices that want claims, ERAs, superbills and good faith estimates in one system, without a separate clearinghouse account. Every plan includes pre-submission checks, claim automations and an estimate template. Claim fees stop if you file elsewhere.

Practices leaving SimplePractice most often cite rising fees and slower support. Weigh those concerns against the convenience of keeping billing in one system.

Free trial and introductory offer

You can file claims free during the 30-day trial. Some payers require an accepted enrollment, though, which needs a paid account.

On October 12th, 2026, starting a paid plan through our link within the first 7 days of the trial took 50% off four months. That is one month longer than the public offer. The discount excludes the CPT fee and card processing.

Our SimplePractice review covers the rest of the platform, and our SimplePractice alternatives list looks beyond billing.
