At a glance
  • Overall rating: 3 out of 5. Happy Saffron Plus is a BrainMD supplement combining affron saffron, Longvida curcumin, and zinc. It is not FDA-approved to treat depression or anxiety.
  • A 30-day bottle costs $53.95, or about $1.80 a day. Subscription prices range from $40.47 to $45.86 per bottle. Insurance does not cover it, but BrainMD offers HSA and FSA payment through Truemed, subject to eligibility and your plan’s rules.
  • As of the September 2026 review, no published trial of the combined product had been identified. BrainMD’s headline claim that 72% of participants improved comes from a saffron-only trial in which 54% of placebo participants also improved.

Happy Saffron Plus combines three ingredients with separate research behind them. Saffron has the most evidence for depressive symptoms, but most trials are small and short. Findings about individual ingredients do not establish whether the combined product works.

We rate Happy Saffron Plus 3 out of 5. Its ingredient doses are close to those used in some studies, but the formula itself has not been tested in a published trial identified for this review. Talk to your doctor or prescriber before starting it, particularly if you take an antidepressant, are pregnant, or have bipolar disorder.

What are Happy Saffron Plus’s pros and cons?

The saffron and curcumin doses are close to those used in published trials. However, BrainMD’s marketing does not always include the placebo results or distinguish between research on its ingredients and the finished product.

Pros

  • The saffron and curcumin doses are close to those used in some published studies.
  • Several meta-analyses found greater improvement in depressive symptoms with saffron than with placebo. [3, 5]
  • BrainMD describes the formula as vegan and free of gluten, dairy, and sugar.
  • HSA and FSA payment is available through Truemed, subject to eligibility and your plan’s rules.

Cons

  • No published trial of the three-ingredient formula was identified for this review.
  • One curcumin study cited by BrainMD tested a different formulation from the one in Happy Saffron Plus.
  • The free trial converts to a subscription, and online cancellation is limited to California residents.
  • The reviewed product page does not include warnings about pregnancy, medication interactions, or bipolar disorder.

What is in BrainMD Happy Saffron Plus?

Happy Saffron Plus contains three active ingredients. The adult serving is three vegan capsules, so a 90-capsule bottle lasts 30 days at that serving size. BrainMD markets it for mood, memory, and sexual function. 1

Ingredient Amount per three capsules
affron saffron extract 30 mg
Longvida curcumin 400 mg, providing 92 mg of curcuminoids
Zinc, as zinc bisglycinate 20 mg, or 182% of the Daily Value

Amounts reflect the label recorded on September 28, 2026. BrainMD directs adults to take the capsules between meals and recommends at least three months of consistent use. 1

Does Happy Saffron Plus work?

The product’s effectiveness is unknown. A PubMed search on September 28, 2026, found no published trial of Happy Saffron Plus itself. BrainMD’s claim of more than 25 human studies refers to research on individual ingredients, not the combined formula. 1

Saffron for depression and anxiety

Saffron has the most research of the three ingredients for depressive symptoms.23 A 2019 review of 23 studies found large effects, but also evidence of publication bias and limited geographic diversity. 2 A 2013 review called for larger, longer trials conducted by research teams outside Iran. 4

A 2026 meta-analysis pooled 34 placebo-controlled trials involving 1,769 people. Saffron improved self-reported depression and anxiety scores, but did not significantly improve clinician-rated scores. Results varied widely between studies. 3

Trials comparing saffron with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) reported similar symptom improvement and fewer side effects with saffron. 5 Guidelines published in 2022 by the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry (WFSBP) and Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) provisionally recommended saffron for depression. 6

These findings do not establish that saffron can replace prescribed treatment. Do not stop or change an antidepressant without your prescriber.

The saffron trials behind BrainMD’s claims

Studies of affron have generally used 28 mg a day, slightly below the 30 mg in Happy Saffron Plus. Most of the trials discussed here were led by researcher Adrian Lopresti.

  • Adults with low mood, 2017: Among 128 adults without a diagnosis, 28 mg a day improved mood scores more than placebo after four weeks. The 22 mg dose did not show a benefit. 7
  • Adults taking antidepressants, 2019: After eight weeks, clinician-rated symptom scores fell 41% with affron and 21% with placebo. Self-rated scores improved by about the same amount in both groups. 8
  • Adults with mild depressive symptoms, 2025: In the largest trial, involving 202 adults, 72.3% of the affron group had meaningful improvement after 12 weeks, compared with 54.3% of the placebo group. Pharmactive, affron’s manufacturer, funded the study, and two authors worked for the company. 9
  • Teenagers, 2018: Among 68 teens ages 12 to 16, self-rated symptoms fell 33% with affron and 17% with placebo. Parents’ ratings did not consistently show the same benefit. 10

BrainMD’s product page highlights the 72% figure without the 54% placebo result. The study tested affron alone, not Happy Saffron Plus. [1, 9]

Curcumin and zinc

The main Longvida study BrainMD cites involved 60 adults ages 60 to 85 who received 400 mg. It found better attention and working memory one hour after a dose.11 BrainMD’s claim of a 16% memory improvement does not appear in the study’s abstract. 11

BrainMD also cites a 2018 memory study that used Theracurmin, a different curcumin formulation. 12 The zinc research linked from its product page includes animal studies. These findings do not directly test the three-ingredient product. 1

What are the safety concerns and FDA status?

Happy Saffron Plus is sold as a dietary supplement. The FDA does not approve dietary supplements before they are marketed, and this product is not FDA-approved to treat depression or anxiety. 13

Side effects and liver concerns

BrainMD markets the formula as free of side effects, but its ingredients can cause adverse effects. Saffron can cause drowsiness, stomach upset, and nausea. 14

Turmeric products have been linked to liver injury, although it is rare. The LiverTox estimate cited here is about 1 case per 10,000 to 100,000 people using turmeric products, not a measured risk for Happy Saffron Plus. Reports include some formulations designed to increase absorption. [15, 16]

Longvida uses a lipid-particle formulation, but the LiverTox source cited here does not name it specifically. Warning signs of liver injury include fatigue, dark urine, and yellowing of the skin. NCCIH advises stopping turmeric or curcumin products and contacting a healthcare professional if these symptoms occur. 15

Medication interactions

Saffron may interact with blood pressure medications, diabetes medications, and sedatives. Zinc can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics.1416 [14, 17]

The saffron monograph cited here does not list an antidepressant interaction. The 2019 affron trial also found no worsening of side effects when saffron was added to antidepressants. However, that trial did not test the curcumin-and-zinc combination in Happy Saffron Plus. Check with your prescriber before combining the product with medication. [8, 14]

Pregnancy and bipolar disorder

Saffron in amounts above those used in food may be unsafe during pregnancy because it can stimulate uterine contractions. Turmeric supplements may also be unsafe during pregnancy. [14, 16]

Saffron precautions include possible excitability and impulsive behavior in people with bipolar disorder. 14 The product page reviewed for this article did not include these cautions.

Some testimonials on BrainMD’s product page describe stopping prescription medication. Those accounts do not establish that the supplement can safely replace treatment. Do not stop or change medication without your prescriber. 1

Children and teens

BrainMD markets the capsules for children ages 4 to 18. The full three-capsule serving contains 20 mg of zinc, but that is not a recommended serving for every child. 1

A child’s zinc intake also includes food and other supplements. The NIH’s daily upper limit from all sources is 12 mg for ages 4 to 8, compared with 40 mg for adults.16 [17, 23] The combined product has not been tested in children in the research identified for this review. Ask your child’s pediatrician before giving it.

Who might consider Happy Saffron Plus?

It may appeal to an adult with mild low mood who is interested in saffron, can afford about $54 a month, and has reviewed possible medication interactions with a clinician. The lack of research on the combined formula remains an important limitation.

It should not replace care when depression or anxiety affects daily life. A clinician can help assess those symptoms and discuss treatment, including therapy. Our BetterHelp review covers one online therapy option.

How much does Happy Saffron Plus cost?

A one-time 30-day bottle costs $53.95. That is below BrainMD’s $75 free-shipping threshold, so shipping is extra. Subscriptions include free shipping to eligible US addresses. [1, 18]

Purchase option Price per 30-day bottle
One-time purchase $53.95
Monthly subscription, 15% off $45.86
Three bottles every three months, 20% off $43.16
Six bottles every six months, 25% off $40.47
Subscription after the 14-day free trial $43.73 a month

Prices were recorded from BrainMD’s product and subscription pages on September 28, 2026. The three- and six-bottle options show the price per bottle, not the total shipment cost. BrainMD’s free subscription shipping excludes Alaska, Hawaii, and US territories. [1, 18]

Free trial and subscription terms

The trial is available to US customers, with one trial program allowed per customer at a time. After 14 days, it converts to a subscription at $43.73, charged every 30 days. BrainMD says it notifies customers before the first subscription charge. 17

Prices can change for existing subscribers. Only California residents can cancel online. Other customers must contact customer care by email, phone, or live chat. 17

Returns and the money-back guarantee

The product page displays a “100% Money Back Guarantee” badge, but returns have conditions. Unopened bottles returned within 60 days of purchase qualify for a refund of the purchase price, minus original and return shipping. 18

For opened bottles, the policy asks customers to report dissatisfaction within 60 days. It lists store credit as the standard option but says refunds and exchanges are also available. Returns without an authorization number incur a 15% restocking fee. 18

HSA and FSA payment

BrainMD works with Truemed, which offers a Letter of Medical Necessity after a short intake form without a live doctor visit. Confirm eligibility with your plan administrator before relying on HSA or FSA funds. Insurance does not cover the product. 1

Is Happy Saffron different from Happy Saffron Plus?

In the BrainMD range reviewed for this article, “Happy Saffron” refers to Happy Saffron Plus rather than a separate product. No BrainMD saffron product without “Plus” in its name was identified, and the older Happy Saffron page address returned an error.

BrainMD also sells a gummy version of Happy Saffron Plus.

Happy Saffron Plus Gummies

BrainMD launched Happy Saffron Plus Gummies in July 2026. Two gummies contain the same active ingredient doses as three capsules, with 0 g of sugar. The label lists xylitol and identifies the gummies for adults and children ages 8 and older.

A 60-gummy bottle provides 30 days at that serving size and costs $53.95. The gummy label displays a third-party lab-tested badge that the capsule label lacks. That labeling difference does not, by itself, establish whether the capsules undergo third-party testing. The first gummy bottle has a 30-day money-back guarantee.

What do Happy Saffron Plus users say?

Product and company ratings

As of September 2026, Happy Saffron Plus had a 4.7 out of 5 rating from 1,064 reviews in BrainMD’s product-page widget. Amazon lists 4.4 from 751 ratings. [1, 20]

BrainMD’s company-wide ratings are lower. Trustpilot shows 3.0 from 22 reviews, and the Better Business Bureau gives it a C, with two complaints, including one unanswered. These ratings concern the company rather than this supplement alone. [21, 22]

Reported benefits and complaints

Positive accounts of saffron supplements commonly describe a subtle improvement in mood after several weeks of daily use. Others report no noticeable difference, and some describe feeling worse, with more anxiety or a racing heart.

Reported side effects include drowsiness, headaches, and nausea. These are user experiences, not a measure of how often the product causes a particular effect. Price is another common complaint, while Trustpilot reviews describe subscription and billing problems. [1, 20, 21]

What are the alternatives to Happy Saffron Plus?

Users often compare Happy Saffron Plus with less expensive standalone affron supplements. These contain saffron without the curcumin and zinc. Choosing Therapy has not reviewed them.

For low mood or anxiety that affects daily life, our guides to anxiety treatment without medication and non-SSRI antidepressants cover options to discuss with a clinician.

How did we research this review?

We did not buy or take Happy Saffron Plus. The review draws on BrainMD’s product and policy pages, the studies it cites, independent meta-analyses, and NIH and FDA safety information. User feedback comes from review ratings and forum discussions summarized as themes.

Our editorial policy explains how we produce reviews.

Who founded BrainMD?

BrainMD says psychiatrist Dr. Daniel G. Amen founded the company in 2009 and that it has sold more than 5 million supplements. Dr. Amen’s work includes brain SPECT imaging.

The research for this review, dated September 28, 2026, did not identify an FDA warning letter or FTC action naming BrainMD.

No. The FDA does not approve dietary supplements before they are sold. Happy Saffron Plus is not FDA-approved to treat depression or anxiety. 13

Can you take Happy Saffron Plus with antidepressants?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Check with your prescriber first. One trial found that adding affron to antidepressants did not worsen side effects, but it did not test the curcumin-and-zinc combination in Happy Saffron Plus. That finding does not establish the safety of every medication combination. 8

How long does Happy Saffron Plus take to work?

The combined product has no published trial identified in this review, so its time to benefit is unknown. Studies of affron, the saffron extract it contains, assessed changes after four to 12 weeks. BrainMD recommends at least three months of consistent use, but that is not a guarantee of improvement. [1, 7, 8, 9]

Does Happy Saffron Plus have side effects?

Its ingredients can cause side effects, including drowsiness, nausea, and stomach upset. Turmeric and curcumin supplements have also been linked to rare liver injury. These findings do not establish a product-specific risk rate for Happy Saffron Plus. [14, 15, 16]

Can children take Happy Saffron Plus?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

BrainMD markets the capsules for ages 4 to 18 and the gummies for ages 8 and older. However, the combined product has not been tested in children in the research identified here. The cited affron trial enrolled teens ages 12 to 16. Ask your child’s pediatrician about the ingredients and total zinc intake before use. [1, 10, 17]

Is Happy Saffron Plus safe during pregnancy?

As a provider, I typically do not recommend supplements that make unfounded claims, such as BrainMD. Supplements are not FDA regulated and, without more and better studies, the benefits vs risks cannot be well-established.
