- Talkspace’s help center has listed the self-pay cancel path as: Account → Payment and plan → Stop subscription renewal. This must be complete before your renewal date and deleting your account does not cancel it.
- For appointment cancellations under 24 hours or missed appointments there is a fee or a session credit. The last published fee, from October 2024, was $125 for therapy and $175 for psychiatry.
- Talkspace doesn’t normally refund services that have already been provided; however, its Help Center says refund requests can be reviewed if they are submitted within 90 days of the charge. The Terms of Service also state that refunds may be issued at Talkspace’s discretion.
Talkspace is an online mental health service that offers both therapy and psychiatry. You can meet with a licensed provider through messaging and live video sessions. Talkspace accepts self-pay subscriptions, health insurance, and benefits provided through an employer, school, or city agency. Self-pay subscriptions renew automatically but can be canceled at any time.1 Insurance and employer-sponsored plans work differently: you are not charged unless you use a service, so there is no ongoing subscription to cancel.2 Talkspace also lets you change therapists for free, pause your subscription for up to seven days, or switch to a lower-cost messaging plan.

Online Therapy Covered by Insurance
Talkspace is in-network with most major insurers, so many members pay only a copay for online therapy or psychiatry. Enter your plan to check your coverage in minutes. Check your coverage
Why People Leave Talkspace & How
Talkspace lets you switch providers for free ay any time or move to a cheaper plan, if needed.
Cost and Insurance Changes
While Talkspace has multiple options for payment, sometimes finances, health insurance, or employee benefits change. Self-pay members can downgrade from video and messaging ($99 a week) to messaging only ($69). Currently, Talkspace publishes no sliding scale options.
For those using insurance you can switch or update your plan by selecting “update my coverage”. Talkspace is in network with Aetna, BCBS/Anthem, Cigna, UHC/Optum, Oscar, Medicare and TRICARE East. Insured charges can post after the claim settles, sometimes several at once.3 Our guide to what Talkspace costs covers each plan.
If you’re looking for other options, Online-Therapy.com starts at $48 a week, and Rula patients on insurance typically pay $15 a session.
Poor Therapist Match
It was found across 11 studies, that a weaker bond between client and therapist led to a higher rate of discontinuing treatment.4 Talkspace makes it easy for you to change providers at any time at no cost: open account → change provider → pick the plan → confirm your preferences and choose from the new matches.5 Matching takes about 48 hours on average. Switching cancels live sessions already booked, and you have the choice about whether you want to share chat history with your new provider.
Feeling Better, Stuck, or Worse
Most people discontinue therapy after they start to feel better.6 Clinicians may also recommend decreasing sessions if sessions keep covering the same ground or there’s an identified plateau. On Talkspace any sessions booked inside your paid period still go ahead after you cancel, so you can still hold a last one or have one “as needed.”2
Some people leave a session feeling worse, and while this is not an immediate reason to discontinue, if sessions regularly leave you feeling worse, talk to your therapist, or consider switching providers.
If you feel unsafe or are thinking about suicide or self-harm, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Talkspace is not for emergencies.
Moving States or Taking a Break
In many circumstances, moving out of state also means finding a new provider. Talkspace can help reassign you to a provider who is licensed in the state where you have relocated.
If you’re considering taking a break from treatment, it’s important to speak with your provider first. You should also understand how pausing your subscription works. Messaging-only plans don’t include live sessions, so there are no late-cancellation or no-show fees. Self-pay members can pause their subscription for up to seven days, which pushes the next billing date back by the number of days paused. You can then set another seven-day pause. Insurance, EAP, and sponsored plans cannot be paused.1 Online-Therapy.com offers a longer pause of one to four weeks.
Dreading Future Sessions
If you find yourself wanting to quit shortly after a difficult session, it may be worth talking with your therapist about what came up before deciding to leave. Sometimes a difficult session can bring up uncomfortable feelings that are worth exploring. This is a very normal experience and it’s likely your therapist is prepared to talk about it with you.
If you find yourself dreading every appointment or consistently feeling uncomfortable with your therapist, it may be a sign that the relationship isn’t a good fit. In that case, you can switch providers.
Therapy Vs. Psychiatry
If you’re using Talkspace for medication management, keep in mind that psychiatry works a little differently from therapy. Talkspace offers psychiatry appointments individually or in bundles, and purchased sessions don’t expire. Talkspace does not publish a policy explaining what happens to prescription refills after you stop seeing your provider, so it’s a good idea to ask your prescriber about your medication and refills before you stop booking appointments.
If you’re considering another psychiatry service, most Talkiatry patients pay $30 per visit through insurance, while Brightside charges $95 a month for self-pay psychiatry.

How to Cancel
Talkspace’s step-by-step cancellation articles are now behind member login, so these instructions come from the last public version, dated August 2025.2 Its current pause instructions use the same screens, although some labels in the app may be different today.
Cancel a Self-Pay Subscription
Talkspace’s help center has listed the cancellation path as:
- Log in at talkspace.com or in the Talkspace app. If your plan is paused, unpause it first.
- Open Account at the top right of the screen.
- Choose Payment and plan.
- Find your subscription and select Stop subscription renewal.
- Follow the prompts and confirm with Cancel subscription renewal.
Your plan will then show as non-renewing. You can continue using the time you’ve already paid for and still access your past messages.1 Live sessions scheduled after your paid period ends won’t go ahead.2 Talkspace also sends a reminder email a few days before each renewal, but there is no option to turn off automatic billing while keeping the subscription active.3
If you change your mind, you can undo the cancellation from the same page. Once the plan has ended, the closed therapy room will show a “Restart Therapy” option.
Insurance, Employer, and EAP Plans
Talkspace says insured members don’t need to cancel because insurance plans don’t create new charges unless you use a service; however, you may still see charges for past sessions weeks later while claims are being processed.2
Employer and EAP plans expire on their own. If you want to close one sooner, go to Account → Payment and plan → Cancel.
Psychiatry
Psychiatry does not have a subscription to cancel. According to Talkspace’s 2025 cancellation article, you need to submit a support request if you want to close your psychiatry plan.2
Apple App Store and Google Play
The main Talkspace app’s App Store listing does not show in-app purchases, and Talkspace bills the payment method on your account. This means a therapy subscription is generally canceled through your Talkspace account rather than through Apple or Google.
Talkspace Go, which is a separate self-guided app, is different. Its subscriptions are billed through Apple or Google and need to be canceled through the applicable app store. Simply deleting your Talkspace Go account does not cancel the subscription.
Cancel or Reschedule One Live Session
If you need to cancel or change an individual live session, do it at least 24 hours ahead of time:3
- Log in and open Schedule in the navigation bar.
- Find the live session.
- To move it, choose Reschedule, select a new time, and choose Confirm rescheduling.
- To cancel it, choose Cancel session, give a reason, and confirm.
Talkspace support can also cancel a session for you, but only if you contact them at least 24 hours beforehand.
When the In-App Option Fails
If you can’t cancel through your account, go to Account → Customer support → Contact us. You can also use live chat, which is available from 9am to 5pm ET on weekdays.
Talkspace’s phone line, +1 (888) 846-4821, has the same hours, although Talkspace warns that you may experience long wait times.
Deleting Your Talkspace Account
Deleting your Talkspace account does not cancel your subscription. Talkspace says that deleting your account or data does not stop the subscription, remove outstanding charges, or trigger a refund.7 If you want to stop being charged, cancel your subscription first and then request account deletion.
If you never completed a session, you can email privacy@talkspace.com to request deletion. If you have completed a session, use Talkspace’s Data Information Removal or Deletion Form. Outside the U.S., this is called the Data Subject Rights Request Form. You will need to include a copy of your photo ID when submitting the request.7
The form can be used to request deletion of your account, messages, and chat history, or to request a copy of your data. Talkspace says medical records are retained as required by healthcare regulations, but it does not state a specific retention period. If you want a copy of your records, request them before asking Talkspace to delete your account.

A late reschedule counts as a late cancellation, and EAP members can be charged as well. The fee appears under Account → Transactions.83 Talkspace’s 2024 billing page told members to ask their provider about waiving the fee, although the provider decides whether to do so.9 Members have also reported charges within the published fee range this year, including a $125 charge in September 2026 on an insured plan.
Talkspace’s Help Center lists subscription costs, add-on sessions, copays, late cancellations, and no-shows as nonrefundable; however, its Terms of Service give Talkspace discretion to issue a full, partial, or prorated refund for services that have already been provided.110 In other words, a refund is possible, but it isn’t guaranteed. Talkspace reviews refund requests made within 90 days of the charge. Insured members who overpaid are automatically refunded once their claim is settled.3
On Trustpilot, Talkspace has a 4.4 rating from 2,388 reviews, including 45 reviews mentioning cancellations and 49 mentioning refunds.11 Common complaints include late fees on insured plans, charges appearing long after someone stopped using Talkspace, and refunds that required repeated follow-up.
Provider Cancellations and No-Shows at Talkspace
If your provider misses a confirmed session, you aren’t charged, and Talkspace will email you so you can rebook.12 If your plan uses session credits, the credit should be returned automatically. If it doesn’t, contact Talkspace support.
Before assuming your provider missed a session, check that the appointment was confirmed, send your provider a message through the therapy room, and give them at least 10 minutes to join. Some reviewers have raised concerns that providers can cancel late without facing the same fee that members face for late cancellations.11
If You Decide to Leave Talkspace
If the issue is your therapist and you’re leaving because of cost, insurance, medication, or the type of care you want, another service may be a better fit. Our Talkspace vs. BetterHelp comparison looks at the two subscriptions side by side.
Self-pay at a lower weekly price. Online-Therapy.com costs $48 to $96 a week and offers 20% off the first month. If you cancel, you keep any days you’ve already paid for.
A subscription with commercial insurance. BetterHelp costs $70 to $100 a week for self-pay, while eligible members using commercial insurance pay an average copay of $23.
Therapy billed per session through insurance. Rula patients typically pay $15 per session. A $99 fee applies when a therapy appointment is missed or canceled less than 24 hours in advance.
Psychiatry through insurance. Talkiatry patients typically pay $30 per visit. You need to give 48 hours’ notice to cancel without a $100 fee.
Medication and therapy in one monthly plan. Brightside charges $349 a month for self-pay members who want both therapy and psychiatry and accepts Medicare Part B.
In-person care. If you want to meet with someone face to face, a local therapist or psychiatrist from your insurance company’s directory may be a better fit.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Do I Cancel Talkspace?
To cancel a Talkspace self-pay subscription, go to Account, Payment and plan, then Stop subscription renewal. This is the path Talkspace’s help center has listed, although the labels may be different in the current app. Make sure you cancel before your next renewal date. Insured and employer-sponsored members generally don’t need to cancel because Talkspace says these plans don’t create new charges without your approval.
What Are Talkspace’s Late Cancellation, Reschedule, and No-Show Fees?
Talkspace can charge a fee or deduct a session credit when you cancel, reschedule, or miss a live session with less than 24 hours’ notice. The fee is not refundable. The last published amounts, from October 2024, were $125 for therapy and $175 for psychiatry. These fees are not covered by insurance.
Does Talkspace Give Refunds?
Talkspace generally does not refund services that have already been provided, and canceling in the middle of a billing period does not result in a refund for unused time; however, Talkspace can review refund requests made within 90 days of a charge, and its Terms allow refunds at its discretion. A refund is not guaranteed, and approved refunds usually take 3 to 5 business days to process.
How Do I Delete My Talkspace Account?
If you never completed a session, you can email privacy@talkspace.com to request account deletion. If you have completed a session, you’ll need to submit Talkspace’s deletion form with a copy of your photo ID. Cancel your subscription first because deleting your account does not stop billing.
Can I Cancel Talkspace Through Apple or Google Play?
You most likely can’t cancel a regular Talkspace therapy subscription through Apple or Google Play. The main Talkspace app’s App Store listing does not show in-app purchases, and Talkspace bills the payment method on your account, so cancellation is handled through your Talkspace account.
Talkspace Go, the separate self-guided app, is different. Its subscription is billed through Apple or Google and needs to be canceled through the applicable app store.
