Talkspace and TRICARE: What’s Covered and Who Needs a Referral

Talkspace joined the TRICARE East network through Humana Military in August 2024, giving more than 6 million members access. Commercial Humana plans are a separate matter: Talkspace does not accept them, only Humana Military through TRICARE East, confirmed September 4, 2026.¹ In January 2025, Talkspace announced that it was in network nationally for approximately 9.5 million active duty and retired military personnel and their families.² TRICARE’s East Region telemedicine page also lists Talkspace as a covered provider.³ Humana Military manages the East Region, while TriWest manages the West Region.

Which TRICARE plans cover Talkspace?

Information is from Talkspace’s TRICARE coverage page as of August 31, 2026.

Covered services include online therapy for adults, teen therapy for ages 13 to 17, couples and family therapy, and psychiatry for adults ages 18 and older. Depending on your plan, sessions may include live video, audio, chat, or ongoing messaging. Talkspace says some TRICARE plans allow unlimited therapy sessions.

Care is available in all 50 states, but you must be physically located in the United States during your appointment. You cannot use Talkspace while stationed or traveling overseas.

Talkspace’s general insurance page says some members’ TRICARE coverage may only be available through an employer’s EAP. Check your individual benefits if you have both TRICARE and employer-sponsored coverage.

Talkspace lists active duty service members with a referral, National Guard and Reserve members, retirees, spouses, and dependents as eligible groups.

Does TRICARE For Life cover Talkspace?

Talkspace does not list TRICARE For Life among its covered plans. However, TRICARE For Life provides wraparound coverage after Medicare, and Talkspace accepts Medicare for therapy. TRICARE says members generally owe nothing for services covered by both Medicare and TRICARE.⁴

This suggests that therapy may be covered when Medicare pays first, but Talkspace does not confirm that arrangement on its website. Check with Talkspace or your TRICARE For Life claims processor before booking.

How much will you pay?

Talkspace lists an average TRICARE copay of $0 for therapy and psychiatry. Your actual cost depends on your plan and beneficiary category.

Modern Healthcare reported that the Humana Military agreement provides access with copays ranging from $0 to $50 per session.⁵ TRICARE generally applies the same cost-sharing rules to virtual and in-person visits.

One person posting in Talkspace’s subreddit reported that the app showed a $0 copay but later charged $134.10. Confirm your cost before the first session, save the eligibility result, and question any unexpected charge immediately.

Without TRICARE, Talkspace’s self-pay therapy plans cost $69 to $109 per week. A psychiatry evaluation costs $299, and follow-up appointments cost $175. Do active duty service members need a referral?

Yes. Active duty service members must receive a referral from their Primary Care Manager before starting with Talkspace. TRICARE’s virtual health rules require referrals for all active duty virtual visits.⁶

Talkspace recommends the following process:

1. Contact your Primary Care Manager or military treatment facility care team through the MHS GENESIS portal or your clinic’s appointment line.
2. Request a behavioral health referral.
3. Tell the care team that you want to receive treatment through telehealth.
4. Wait until the referral is active before enrolling with Talkspace.

Other TRICARE beneficiaries generally do not need a referral for outpatient mental health care from an in-network provider. Spouses, teen dependents, National Guard and Reserve members, and retirees can sign up directly.

How do you sign up for Talkspace with TRICARE?

1. Find the 11-digit DoD Benefits Number on the back of your uniformed services ID card.
2. Open Talkspace’s eligibility check. You can also visit talkspace.com/military and select Get Started. TRICARE East members can register at talkspace.com/humanamilitary.
3. Enter your DoD Benefits Number and the state where you will receive care.
4. Complete the matching questions. Talkspace says therapy matches usually take about two days. Psychiatry appointments are generally available within about one week.
5. Contact your regional contractor if you have coverage questions. Call Humana Military at 800-444-5445 for the East Region or TriWest at 888-TRIWEST for the West Region.

What other TRICARE-covered telehealth options are available?

Talkspace is one of several telemedicine providers on TRICARE’s covered list.

Telemynd offers therapy, psychiatry, and medication management for patients ages 5 and older. It may be a better option for families with children who are too young for Talkspace’s teen program.

Teladoc and Doctor On Demand are two other options that provide behavioral health appointments, including psychiatry.

TRICARE’s list also includes SimpliFed for lactation support at no cost and Expressable for speech therapy.³ These services may help military families managing several types of telehealth care.

TRICARE also covers in-person mental health treatment from network providers under the same cost-sharing rules. This may suit people who want an ongoing relationship with a local clinician. Active-duty members still need a referral from their Primary Care Manager.

Finding a local provider can be difficult in some areas. Therapists discussing TRICARE in professional forums often describe its reimbursement rates as low and its administrative requirements as heavier than those of other insurers. Those factors may limit the number of clinicians who join the network.

Can veterans use Talkspace?

Veterans may use Talkspace through commercial insurance, TRICARE, or Medicare. Talkspace does not provide a direct VA health care or VA community care billing option.

Talkspace’s veterans program covers concerns including PTSD, trauma, depression, anxiety, stress, and relationship problems. Teen therapy is available for ages 13 to 17, while psychiatry is available for adults ages 18 and older. Live video appointments are offered in all 50 states.
