- Yes. UnitedHealthcare members reach Talkspace through Optum, which administers behavioral health benefits for UHC plans. “United Healthcare” sits in the plan dropdown on Talkspace’s Optum coverage page.
- The average Optum member pays $15 per session for therapy or psychiatry through Talkspace. Coverage is always plan-dependent, so verify with your Member ID first.
- There are exceptions. Talkspace is not enrolled with Medicaid, so UnitedHealthcare Community Plan is not covered, and Original Medicare covers therapy only.
Optum administers mental health benefits for UnitedHealthcare plans. The partnership dates to 2019, when Talkspace became available to about 2 million Optum customers. By the end of 2025 Talkspace’s services were available to more than 200 million people across insurance plans, EAPs, employers, and schools.1 Check your UnitedHealthcare plan through Talkspace’s eligibility page using your Member ID.

Online Therapy Covered by Insurance
Talkspace is in-network with most major insurers, so many members pay only a copay for online therapy or psychiatry. Enter your plan to check your coverage in minutes. Check your coverage
Which UnitedHealthcare-family plans are listed
Talkspace’s Optum coverage page lets you select from Optum, United Healthcare, UMR, Medica, Surest, United Medicare Advantage, Rocky Mountain Health Plan (including its Medicare Advantage line), and the NYCE PPO Plan. Whether your specific plan covers Talkspace still depends on your plan sponsor. Talkspace’s help center notes that if signup starts showing subscription pricing screens, your insurance may not be in-network for it.

As of August 31, 2026, from Talkspace’s Optum coverage page and help center.
Covered services under Optum plans include therapy and psychiatry with medication management, across 150+ conditions. Couples and teen therapy are included on some plans, and which session formats your plan covers (live video, live audio, or messaging), is also plan-dependent. Psychiatry runs differently since sessions are live video only. The initial evaluation typically takes 45 to 60 minutes with shorter follow-ups. You can message your prescriber medication or scheduling questions at no charge between sessions, with replies usually by the next business day. Talkspace does not prescribe controlled substances, sedatives, or stimulants.
What you’ll pay with UnitedHealthcare
The average Optum member pays $15 per session for therapy or psychiatry, per Talkspace’s Optum page. The insurance-page FAQ lists UMR members at the same $15 average. Site-wide, Talkspace says most insured members pay $0, and its help center frames copays as usually $30 or less. The order of charges:
- On a high-deductible plan, the deductible comes first. Until it is met you pay the full cost of covered sessions.
- Your copay is typically charged after each completed session.
- Talkspace then submits the claim to your insurer and the claim is processed. Any remaining balance auto-charges the card on file with an invoice. Talkspace states it cannot confirm final costs until claims settle, it cannot disable auto-billing, and it offers no payment plans.
- A card is required even when covered, with a temporary $10 verification hold that drops off within 3 to 7 business days uncollected.
Claims bill under Talkspace’s group Tax ID and NPI rather than your individual therapist’s, and support will give you those numbers so your insurer can confirm network status precisely. Your billing history sits under Account, then Transactions, which is where to reconcile a surprise invoice against your sessions.
UHC Medicare Advantage, Medicare, and Medicaid
United Medicare Advantage appears by name in the Optum dropdown. Per Talkspace’s Medicare article, therapy is covered by Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans in all 50 states and DC. Psychiatry is not covered by Original Medicare, and under Medicare Advantage it “may be covered by your plan”, so confirm first. Talkspace also accepts Medigap supplemental coverage and forwards claims to it before billing you. Its insurance page lists the average Medicare member copay at $0, with deductible, coinsurance, and supplemental coverage setting the real figure.
Talkspace is not enrolled with Medicaid, which includes UnitedHealthcare Community Plan members. If using coverage is important, Grow Therapy works with 125+ plans including Medicaid in some states, therapist by therapist.
How to verify your coverage
- Open Talkspace’s eligibility check, pick your plan from the dropdown (United Healthcare, UMR, Medica, or the one on your card), and enter your Member ID. It confirms eligibility and cost share, and per HelpGuide’s testers it works without creating an account.2
- Alternatively call the number on the back of your card and ask Talkspace’s own four questions: Am I eligible for Talkspace telehealth? Which services are covered (individual, couples, psychiatry)? Do benefits extend to my dependents? What is my cost share?
- If you have an Optum EAP through work, a separate route exists with prepaid session credits. You need your organization’s name, an authorization code, or an authorization letter to register. The credits are US-only, and the authorization letter lists the session count and expiration date, so you know the runway before starting.
- If the eligibility checker results surprise you, call the behavioral health number on your card. Give them Talkspace’s group NPI to verify coverage. The help center’s script also says to ask whether benefits extend to your dependents.
If your plan doesn’t include Talkspace
Self-pay runs $69 a week for messaging-only therapy, $99 with video, $109 with workshops, and $69 to $109 a week for teen or couples plans. Psychiatry evaluation is $299 with $175 per follow-up. Talkspace offers 10 to 20 percent off for quarterly or biannual billing and superbills available for out-of-network or FSA/HSA claims. Full tier math sits in our Talkspace cost guide. If you would rather stay in-network with UnitedHealthcare, Talkiatry displays UnitedHealthcare among its accepted insurers and verifies network status before your first visit.
Talkspace vs a UnitedHealthcare directory psychiatrist
The traditional path is finding a psychiatrist in UnitedHealthcare’s plan directory, and the published supply numbers explain why that path is slow. Of 948 psychiatrists sampled across five states in a 2023 study, 18.5 percent were taking new patients, and the median wait ran 67 days in person or 43 by telepsychiatry.3 Choose the directory anyway when its strengths fit you. It offers in-person sessions and a long-term provider you can select yourself. UHC runs its own virtual visit options through uhc.com for telehealth inside the UHC ecosystem. Talkspace makes sense when you cannot wait two months for a first appointment.
What UHC members report
Talkspace holds a 4.4 Trustpilot rating across 2,373 reviews. Reviews from this year describe auto-charges long after leaving and system errors applying EAP codes.4 In HelpGuide’s August 2026 survey, 78 percent of Talkspace users paid through insurance and nearly a third of insured users had a $0 copay. 82 percent of therapy users and 85 percent of psychiatry users rate the cost as good or very good value.2 The same review’s tester verified therapy coverage easily but could not get psychiatry coverage verified despite submitting documentation. Then ended up paying out of pocket. If covered psychiatry is your goal, confirm that benefit explicitly before the $299 evaluation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Optum the same as UnitedHealthcare?
They are siblings under UnitedHealth Group. Optum administers behavioral health benefits for UnitedHealthcare plans, which is why Talkspace’s UHC coverage is on its Optum page.
Does UnitedHealthcare Community Plan cover Talkspace?
No. Community Plan is UHC’s Medicaid plan, and Talkspace is not enrolled with Medicaid.
Does UHC Medicare Advantage cover Talkspace?
Yes therapy is covered in all 50 states per Talkspace’s Medicare article. However, psychiatry may be covered depending on your plan. United Medicare Advantage is selectable in the eligibility checker.
Does UMR cover Talkspace?
Yes, UMR is in the plan dropdown, and Talkspace’s insurance-page FAQ lists the average UMR copay at $15.
Is Talkspace owned by UnitedHealth now?
No. Universal Health Services, a hospital and behavioral health operator unrelated to UnitedHealth, completed its acquisition of Talkspace on August 17, 2026. In-network arrangements did not change at closing.1
Does Talkspace cover Surest or Medica plans?
Both appear in the Optum page’s plan dropdown, alongside Rocky Mountain Health Plan and the NYCE PPO. Always run your Member ID through the check as coverage and cost share are plan-specific.
Can Talkspace prescribe controlled substances under my UHC plan?
No plan changes that policy. Talkspace does not prescribe any controlled substances, sedatives and stimulants included.
Why does signup show subscription prices instead of my copay?
Per Talkspace’s help center, subscription pricing screens during signup mean your insurance may not be in-network for Talkspace, so stop and verify before paying out of pocket.
What if my employer’s UHC plan didn’t elect Talkspace?
Coverage varies by plan sponsor and nothing is published that lists who opted in. The checker gives you the answer in minutes. Self-pay and Talkiatry are the fallbacks. Our Talkspace review covers what the service is like once coverage is settled.
Whichever plan name is on your card, Optum administers the behavioral health benefit and the copay averages $15. Run the eligibility check to get your own plan’s number.
