How to Cancel a Talkiatry Appointment: Steps and Fees

• Cancel or reschedule an appointment by email at hello@talkiatry.com, by phone at 833-351-8255, or through the help-center web chat. Talkiatry does not document a cancellation button in the patient portal.
• Canceling or rescheduling with less than 48 hours’ notice, or missing a visit, costs $100. The fee is charged to the card on file and cannot be covered by insurance.
• Talkiatry does not publish a refund policy because visits are not prepaid. Visits are billed to your insurer afterward, and billing disputes must be raised within 30 days of the charge.

Talkiatry is a virtual psychiatry practice that sees patients by video and bills insurance after each visit. There is no subscription to cancel. You can cancel one appointment or leave the practice, which Talkiatry handles as a discharge. Before leaving, you may be able to resolve an insurance issue or request a different psychiatrist within the practice.

What should you consider before canceling?

A 2012 meta-analysis found that about 1 in 5 adult psychotherapy clients stopped treatment before their clinician considered it finished. ¹ The reason you want to leave may help you decide whether to adjust your care, switch psychiatrists, or end treatment.

The cost of your visits

Among US adults with a mental illness and an unmet need for care, 59.8% said care would cost too much in the 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. ² Talkiatry has no self-pay option for out-of-network plans.

To update your insurance, email photos of your new card to insurancecard@talkiatry.com for a network recheck and claim resubmission. If you have lost coverage, contact billing@talkiatry.com to discuss your options. Balances may be charged to your card up to 90 days after a visit and sent to collections after 120 days. ³

Talkiatry does not accept Medicaid. Rula and Brightside accept some plans that Talkiatry cannot bill.

Problems with your psychiatrist

Switching may make sense if your psychiatrist lacks the expertise you need or if trust and communication problems continue after you raise them. Discomfort with difficult treatment topics does not necessarily mean the psychiatrist is a poor fit.

For a poor fit, slow replies, or repeated cancellations, Talkiatry directs patients to request another psychiatrist. Email hello@talkiatry.com or call 833-351-8255. No switching fee or limit is published, and Talkiatry’s guidance puts most switches at one to three weeks. ⁴

The new psychiatrist conducts their own evaluation, and each visit is billed through insurance. Reviewers report waits ranging from a few days to two weeks. Brightside, by comparison, lets members change providers through a portal setting.

A treatment plateau or planned ending

A plateau in progress, repetitive sessions, goals you have reached, or the need for a different specialist are reasons to discuss the next step with your clinician. Talkiatry treats medication side effects as a reason to adjust the plan. Stopping a medication should also be discussed with your psychiatrist.

Talkiatry describes putting treatment “on hold” as being discharged from the practice.

Scheduling conflicts or a move

In the same survey, 47.0% of US adults with an unmet need for care cited lack of time as one reason. ² Rescheduling a Talkiatry appointment with less than 48 hours’ notice costs the same $100 as missing it. ⁵

Your psychiatrist must be licensed in the state where you are during the visit. Talkiatry covers 45 states plus Washington, D.C., and joining from outside its licensed states counts as a no-show. ⁶ If you move and your psychiatrist cannot see you in the new state, Talkiatry says it will match you with a new licensed provider in that state. Brightside covers all 50 states and D.C.

Dreading or avoiding sessions

A difficult session can leave you wanting to stop because of what it brought up. Dreading every appointment, however, may suggest that you do not feel safe with your clinician. The usual first step is to discuss those feelings during a session.

Missed follow-ups can lead to an adherence letter, followed by discharge after 10 days.

Every published cancellation route goes through a care coordinator. A patient portal beta launched in January 2026 lists scheduling, but no help-center article documents a cancellation button.

Canceling or rescheduling one appointment

Choose one of these contact methods:

1. Email: Send your name, date of birth, account email, and appointment time to hello@talkiatry.com. To reschedule, include your preferred appointment time.
2. Web chat: Open the help center on talkiatry.com and select the purple icon at the bottom right. Chat is available weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern.
3. Phone: Call 833-351-8255, then press 1 for a first visit or 2 if you have been seen before. ⁵

Keep the cancellation confirmation. Some patients report that canceled appointments remained active in the system.

Leaving the practice

Tell your clinician during a visit, email hello@talkiatry.com, or call 833-351-8255 and ask to be discharged. You can request the records release form at the same time.

Talkiatry sends a termination letter and charges any outstanding balance to the card on file. ³ The practice may also end care after an adherence letter, for nonpayment or prescription misuse, or if you move outside its licensed states.

Deleting your account and data

Talkiatry does not publish an account-deletion guide. After leaving the practice, follow the “Make a data request” link in the Document Center on talkiatry.com.

Its privacy policy, effective July 3, 2026, says HIPAA and state law prevent deletion of most protected health information. It notes a 10-year retention period in some states. Contact details held outside the medical record may be eligible for deletion. ⁷

Removing your stored card requires a separate request to privacy@talkiatry.com. Doing so while you are still a patient starts the discharge process. ³

Send the completed release form to medicalrecords@talkiatry.com. Federal rules require a response to a records request within 30 days. ⁸

Disputing a cancellation fee

The help center does not publish a grace period, first-visit exemption, or waiver process. Contact billing support within 30 days of the charge at billing@talkiatry.com or 833-351-8255, pressing 2 and then 4. ³

Patients report that fees have been removed case by case, usually for a first appointment or a provider no-show. These reports do not establish a guaranteed exception to the policy.

What patients report about billing

Talkiatry has a 2.5 TrustScore from 1,000 Trustpilot reviews, with 66% giving one star. The Better Business Bureau rates it F, with 239 complaints over three years.

Disputed fees commonly involve a failed session link, a provider who did not appear, or an appointment the patient says they never booked. Two September 2026 reviews describe a $200 charge rather than the published $100 fee, but those charges are unverified.

What if your psychiatrist cancels or is late?

Talkiatry’s published guidance is to call 833-351-8255 so the team can contact your provider or reschedule. No written policy promises a credit or waived fee, and no rule specifies how long to wait for a late provider.

If your psychiatrist leaves the practice, Talkiatry sends an email and matches you with another provider. When timing allows, it also arranges a final visit to plan the handover.

Provider cancellations are one of the three main themes in Talkiatry’s negative reviews. Patients describe intake visits canceled 20 minutes before the start and half-hour waits in empty virtual waiting rooms. Some report having fees waived afterward as a courtesy, but the published policy does not require this. Record when you joined and what happened, and dispute any charge within 30 days.

What happens to refills when you stop seeing your psychiatrist?

Requesting a refill before canceling

Refill access depends on how recently you were seen, so address it before canceling. Requests can be made by phone, email, or through the Healow app. Email requests should include the medication name, dose, last fill date, days of medication remaining, and pharmacy.

Talkiatry says it will not refill medication without a visit in the past 90 days. If your last visit was more than 30 days ago, it books a coverage appointment with an available clinician. This visit is billed like any other and is used to arrange a bridge prescription of about 30 days at your current dose. ⁹

Planning the handover to a new prescriber

Talkiatry does not promise a bridge supply for patients leaving the practice. Its guidance is to book a new prescriber while you still have refills. If that appointment is more than two weeks away, ask your current psychiatrist about a transitional refill. ⁴ If you have already run out, Talkiatry directs patients to their primary care doctor or an urgent care clinic.

Stopping medication on your own can cause symptoms to return. Abruptly stopping other medications can cause severe side effects. For example, stopping benzodiazepines too quickly can cause seizures. ¹⁰ Adderall, Vyvanse, and other Schedule II medications cannot be refilled under federal rules. Each fill requires a new prescription. ¹¹

What are your options if you leave Talkiatry?

Requesting a different psychiatrist within Talkiatry is free, and your claims and medical records remain with the same practice. For care elsewhere, the options depend on why you are leaving.

Different insurance coverage

Rula is in network with more than 120 plans and sends a cost estimate after booking. It tells patients transferring care that their existing medication regimen is not guaranteed to continue. Medicaid members can see therapists only.

Flat monthly pricing or self-service scheduling

Brightside charges $95 a month for self-pay psychiatry, plus your pharmacy copay, and accepts some Medicare and Medicaid plans. It prescribes stimulants only to insured members in nine states and does not prescribe benzodiazepines anywhere.

In-person psychiatry

Talkiatry says some patients should be seen in person, and some states require an in-person visit before a controlled substance can be prescribed. In a 2023 study, 18.5% of 948 psychiatrists contacted across five states could accept a new patient. ¹² Rula offers in-person care in 10 states.
