At a glance
  • Talkiatry has no price list. Since it is insurance-only, your cost is whatever your plan sets as your share of an in-network psychiatry visit.
  • Talkiatry says most patients pay $30 or less per visit after insurance. With an unmet deductible, you owe the full insurer-negotiated rate instead.
  • Nothing is charged upfront, and Talkiatry verifies your network status before your first visit, covering that visit if it gets your coverage wrong.

Talkiatry does not publish a price list. It is a national online psychiatry practice that bills through insurance only, with no self-pay option. You see a psychiatrist over video for evaluation and medication management, and therapists are available once you have a Talkiatry psychiatrist. Your insurance plan sets your cost, so the same visit can cost one person $0 and another a few hundred dollars, depending mostly on whether your deductible is met.

What Talkiatry costs with insurance

Talkiatry’s own claim on its insurance page is “Most patients pay $30*,” a figure that includes copays, coinsurance, deductible payments, and $0 outcomes across its billed visits.1 Its help center puts it as “the majority of our visits cost patients $30 or less after insurance.”2 The page pairs that claim with a copay estimator where you pick your insurance plan and see an average visit cost range for it.

The first visit is typically 60 minutes and bills at a higher rate. Follow-ups are shorter, typically about 30 minutes per Talkiatry’s blog, and bill at a lower, consistent rate.1 Your plan’s mental health copay sets the flat-copay case. Talkiatry’s own cost guide puts typical copays at $10 to $50,5 and industry reporting from Headway puts in-network therapy copays at $15 to $50 per session.2

For someone whose deductible is met, or whose plan covers mental health visits with a flat copay, Talkiatry usually costs about what any in-network specialist visit costs, a copay in the tens of dollars, billed after the visit.

How billing works and why surprise bills happen

Talkiatry charges nothing at booking and nothing at the visit. It bills your insurer first, waits for the insurer’s decision, and sends you a statement afterward, typically around 30 days later.3 Your insurer then decides your share, whether that’s a copay, coinsurance, or, if your deductible has not been met, “the full amount of the visit” at the rate your insurer negotiated.3

That last case is the source of the documented complaints. A consumer-advocacy investigation by Truth in Advertising collected reports of a $334 bill arriving 28 days after a visit, two bills totaling more than $550 after two visits, and a reviewer billed nearly $1,000 for two hours of care, each from patients who had been told, accurately, that their insurance was accepted.4 Talkiatry’s response was that final cost depends on coverage and patients should contact their insurer, which is technically right and easy to miss at signup.

“Insurance accepted” means in-network. It does not mean your insurance will pay. If you carry an unmet deductible, expect to owe the full negotiated rate for that 60-minute first evaluation, commonly a few hundred dollars based on typical psychiatry pricing, until your deductible is satisfied. Nothing about the pricing is hidden; the first bill just arrives about a month after the appointment.

Cost scenarios

Your situation What you pay at Talkiatry When
Deductible met, or flat mental health copay Your plan’s copay. Talkiatry says most patients land at $30 or less Statement after the insurer processes, ~30 days
Deductible not yet met The full insurer-negotiated visit rate until the deductible is satisfied Same billing cycle
Original Medicare (Part B) Accepted. Your Part B cost sharing applies Same billing cycle
Medicaid Not accepted at Talkiatry See alternatives below

Costs beyond the visit price

  • The $100 late-cancellation and no-show fee applies within 48 hours of the appointment, and also if you join from somewhere the visit legally cannot happen, including being out of the state your clinician is licensed for.5 Joining a session from vacation in another state can cost you $100.
  • Medication is a separate line. Prescriptions go to your preferred pharmacy and bill through your drug coverage, not through Talkiatry.
  • Refills imply follow-ups. If you have not seen your clinician in 90 days, a refill requires booking an appointment first, so staying on medication realistically means a follow-up visit, and its cost share, about every three months.
  • Therapy requires the psychiatrist. Talkiatry therapists see only patients who already have a Talkiatry psychiatrist. Therapy visits bill through insurance like everything else.

How to know your exact cost before booking

  1. Use the copay estimator on Talkiatry’s insurance page. It shows an average visit cost range for your specific plan.
  2. Call the number on your insurance card and ask three questions: what is my cost share for CPT 99204 (a 60-minute initial psychiatric evaluation) and 90833 (a psychotherapy add-on), where does my deductible stand, and is telehealth covered like an office visit? Those codes are the ones Talkiatry itself points patients to.6
  3. Know the guarantee: Talkiatry verifies you are in-network before the first visit, and if it gets that wrong, it covers the full cost of that visit.1 The guarantee covers network status, though, not your deductible.
  4. For billing questions after a visit, Talkiatry runs a dedicated billing line (833-351-8255) and billing@talkiatry.com.

Can you use Talkiatry without insurance?

No. Talkiatry’s own FAQ says “we do not currently offer a self-pay option.” For uninsured readers, or anyone whose plan is out of network, the practical routes are Brightside Health, whose self-pay psychiatry runs a flat $95 per month, and Rula, which publishes per-session self-pay rates of $225 for a psychiatry intake and $175 for follow-ups, alongside insurance, where patients typically pay $15 per session. Medicaid holders, whom Talkiatry cannot see, can use Grow Therapy or Rula in many states.

Is Talkiatry expensive?

Against cash psychiatry, no. Talkiatry’s own cost guide puts an out-of-pocket initial psychiatric evaluation at up to $300 to $500 and medication-management follow-ups at $100 to $300 per visit.7 For an insured patient past their deductible, those numbers become specialist copays, and a year of quarterly follow-ups can cost less than a single cash evaluation elsewhere. Our Talkiatry review covers what the care itself is like.

The clear exception is the high-deductible plan holder early in the plan year, who pays negotiated rates out of pocket until the deductible is met. For that reader, Brightside’s flat $95 per month can be the cheaper psychiatry path, with Talkiatry becoming copay-priced once the deductible is satisfied.

There is no without-insurance price. Talkiatry only sees patients whose insurance it accepts. Uninsured readers can look at Brightside ($95 per month self-pay psychiatry) or Rula ($225 intake, $175 follow-ups self-pay).

For insured patients past their deductible, it usually costs a specialist copay per visit, cheap against the $300 to $500 cash evaluations Talkiatry’s own guide cites. With an unmet deductible it costs the full negotiated rate per visit, which is where the surprise-bill stories come from. Check your deductible status before you book.

Why did I get a big bill weeks after my visit?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Talkiatry bills your insurer first and sends your statement after the insurer decides your share, usually around 30 days out. A large bill almost always means the visit was billed at the full negotiated rate against an unmet deductible, and your insurer’s explanation of benefits shows the math. Talkiatry’s billing team (833-351-8255) can walk through the statement.

What is the Talkiatry cancellation fee?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

$100 for canceling or rescheduling within 48 hours, for missing the appointment, or for joining from a place the visit cannot legally happen, such as another state. Talkiatry insurance coverage does not extend to the fee; it is always out of pocket.

Check your plan and deductible through Talkiatry’s signup before booking, so you know your cost in advance.
