ChoosingTherapy.com is user supported. We may earn a commission if you sign up for a service through our links, at no cost to you. Our reviews and comparisons are based on independent research.

At a glance
  • Cancel in the Hims app or on hims.com under Subscriptions, then Manage, Additional Options and Discontinue plan, or call 1-800-368-0038. Each subscription must be canceled separately.
  • Act at least 48 hours before the Next Order Date in your account. The plan ends at the close of the current period, and an order that is already processing or has shipped still goes out.
  • Hims does not refund partly used periods unless it agrees case by case, and it accepts no returns. Before canceling a mental health medication, arrange refills or a prescription transfer with your provider.

Canceling Hims is mostly a timing issue. Every subscription has a Next Order Date, when Hims charges your card and begins processing the next order. Any change, including cancellation, must be made at least 48 hours before that date.

Hair loss, weight loss and each of the eight anxiety and depression medications prescribed through Hims are billed as separate subscriptions. One cancellation may not close everything. Hims also uses its own payment processors rather than Apple or Google Play, so canceling through your phone settings will not stop the charges.

The first thing I would check is how many active subscriptions appear in your account and the Next Order Date for each. The sections below explain the main reasons people leave, the available alternatives and the exact cancellation steps.

Common reasons people cancel Hims

Some problems can be handled without ending the subscription. Moving a refill date, requesting a dose change or switching to a different type of care may solve the issue. Start by deciding what you actually want to change.

This article is for information only and is not medical advice. Talk to a doctor or licensed clinician before starting, stopping, or changing any treatment.

Price, renewals and no insurance

Subscription charges are easy to lose track of. In a 2022 survey of 1,000 US adults, 42% said they had forgotten they were still paying for a subscription they no longer used.1 Hims accepts no insurance, Medicare or Medicaid and publishes no sliding scale. Changing or snoozing a refill date delays a charge but does not cancel the subscription.

For psychiatry billed through a health plan, Talkiatry and Brightside accept insurance.

A provider who is slow to reply

Feeling unheard by a clinician can be a sign that the fit is not working, according to Columbia psychologist Erin Engle. Hims messages are not live, and Hims may use AI to draft replies that a licensed clinician reviews before they are sent.2 Recent Trustpilot reviewers describe support that feels automated.3

Medication that is not helping, or is no longer needed

Do not stop a prescribed medication on your own, even when you feel better. The National Institute of Mental Health warns that stopping too soon can cause harmful side effects.4 Hims advertises unlimited dosage adjustments on its mental health plans. You request a change by message, and your provider decides whether it is appropriate.

Our guide to antidepressant discontinuation syndrome explains what stopping medication can involve.

If you feel worse, feel unsafe or are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Hims messaging is not emergency care.

Moving or switching to therapy

Hims operates in all 50 states, although some treatments are limited to certain states, and it does not offer therapy. Talkspace and BetterHelp both provide talk therapy online.

Doubts about taking medication

Psychologist Trevor Grossman recommends identifying when the urge to leave care began and what happened immediately before it. You can raise those concerns with your Hims provider through unlimited messaging before making a final decision.

How to cancel a Hims subscription

You can cancel a Hims subscription at any time in the app, on the website, by secure message or by calling 1-800-368-0038.2 Cancel at least 48 hours before the Next Order Date, and repeat the process for every subscription you hold.5

In the Hims app

Start from the home screen.

1. Log in and tap the profile icon in the top right corner.

2. Select Subscriptions.

3. Under the subscription you want to end, select Additional Options, then Manage Subscription.

4. Select Discontinue plan, then Cancel Subscription, and follow the prompts.

On the Hims website

The menu names are similar to the app.

1. Log in and click the Subscriptions tab in the top menu.

2. Click Manage next to the subscription.

3. Under Get help, click Additional Options, then Manage subscription.

4. Click Discontinue plan, then Cancel Subscription, and complete the prompts.

By phone or secure message

If the cancellation option does not appear, call 1-800-368-0038 or send a request through the secure messaging portal. The portal is not live chat. A weight loss membership is canceled under Turn off auto-renew. Canceling only the medication leaves the monthly membership active.2

Some plans also have an auto-renew switch under Adjust my plan. You can turn it back on before the next billing date.

Keep the confirmation

In July 2026, the FTC, Utah and California sued Hims & Hers in federal court, case 3:26-cv-07871 in the Northern District of California. The complaint alleges, among other claims, that the company charged for subscriptions without clear consent and hid the cancellation button. Hims disputes the allegations, and the case is pending.67

The steps above follow Hims’ help article as updated in August 2026.5 Save the written confirmation and make sure no Next Order Date remains. Removing your card may not stop billing because Hims can ask the card issuer for updated card details.2

Canceling or delaying a Hims order

Canceling the subscription does not reverse an order that is already processing or has shipped. Hims does not guarantee a refund after the pharmacy processes an order.58 Its terms allow the first renewal to be charged early and later renewals up to two days early, so cancel earlier than the 48-hour deadline when possible.2

The tracking email arrives only after processing, and Hims accepts no returns. Better Business Bureau complaints from mid-September 2026 describe cancellation requests made on the day an order shipped, followed by denied refunds.9

Pausing instead

Refill now, Change refill date and Snooze appear under the Care icon in the app and under Subscriptions, then Manage, on the website. Some subscriptions do not show these options. Moving a date does not cancel the plan, and charging restarts automatically when a pause ends.2

A long snooze can allow the prescription to expire, which means you need a follow-up visit before restarting.

Refills and prescription transfers

Hims does not publish guidance on continuing an antidepressant after a mental health subscription ends. Before canceling, message your provider about remaining refills or transferring the prescription to a local pharmacy. Hims describes transfers for members with an active subscription, so begin while your plan is still running:4

1. Message Hims that you want to transfer the prescription. Hims sends the contact details for its partner pharmacy.

2. Give those details to your local pharmacy. The local pharmacy contacts Hims’ pharmacy, and the transfer usually takes 1 to 3 days.

3. After the transfer is complete, tell Hims so it can cancel the subscription.

Local prices may differ. Compounded medications can transfer only to a compounding pharmacy. In New York, a partly used prescription transferred locally receives one fill.

For medical records, email support@forhims.com with Medical Records Request in the subject line. A prescription screenshot from Hims cannot be filled at a pharmacy. If you return more than 90 days after canceling a mental health medication, you need a new consultation.10

This article is for information only and is not medical advice. Talk to a doctor or licensed clinician before starting, stopping, or changing any treatment.

Request a refund by secure message or phone. Hims does not refund an order that you have disputed with your card issuer. Other disputes go to arbitration unless you opted out within 30 days, although small claims court remains available.2

Hims has a Trustpilot TrustScore of 2.9 from 9,395 reviews. Among 20 reviews mentioning a refund from August 25 through September 22, 2026, 14 gave one star. Complaints included denied refunds after an order had processed and a refused $149 membership fee. Three reviewers said Hims refunded them after they complained.3

The Better Business Bureau records 4,471 complaints over three years. The newest complaints describe orders shipped after a cancellation request and charges after auto-renew was switched off.9

If your Hims provider is unavailable

If your provider’s calendar is full, message the care team and Hims will help connect you with someone available. A provider may also decide that you need an in-person visit. In that case, Hims tells you it cannot treat the issue online.2

Reschedule visits under Appointments. No Hims help article mentions a rescheduling fee.

How to delete your Hims account

Canceling every subscription leaves the account open. Account deletion is a separate privacy request at privacy.hims.com, under Make a Privacy Request, or by email to privacy@forhims.com. Hims verifies the request through the email connected to your account.11

Request your medical records first. Hims can keep information held in the medical record on behalf of your providers and does not publish a fixed retention period.11

If you decide to leave Hims

Hims offers medication only and does not accept insurance. For therapy or care paid by a health plan, you will need another service.

Psychiatry billed to commercial insurance. Every Talkiatry clinician is in-network with major insurers, and most patients pay $30 after insurance. Talkiatry has no self-pay option and does not accept Medicaid.

Medicare, Medicaid or a flat monthly price. Brightside accepts some Medicare and Medicaid plans. Its self-pay psychiatry plan costs $95 a month.

Therapy through insurance. Talkspace says most insured members pay a $0 copay. Its cash plans start at $69 a week for messaging.

Weekly live sessions paid in cash. BetterHelp costs $70 to $100 a week, billed every four weeks, with messaging and one live session each week.

A lower-cost program you can pause. Online-Therapy.com charges $60 a week for messaging and a CBT program, or $48 a week during the first month. Its cancellation screen offers a pause of one to four weeks.

Care in person. Hims’ FAQ lists in-person psychiatry, therapy and counseling for people who are not a fit for online treatment. It also recommends keeping your primary care provider informed about new medications. Our best online psychiatrist guide and Hims mental health review compare the online options.
