If you’re looking for an online class your child will enjoy, Outschool gives you plenty of choices, from one-time art or reading classes to weekly clubs and tutoring. Independent teachers and education companies set the classes and prices, so the experience can vary. We rated Outschool 4 out of 5. Families may want to start with a single class and review the teacher’s profile before committing to a membership.
Parents most often raise concerns about recurring charges and unused membership credits. The quality of a class depends on the teacher.

What Outschool is and who it may suit
Outschool is an online marketplace where independent teachers and education companies create and price classes for kids and teens. Outschool reviews each class description before it goes live and handles payment. Its home page lists ages 3 to 18, while the help center says 1 to 18. Adults can’t enroll.
Classes come in four formats:
Live group classes, including fixed-length courses and camps, plus recurring weekly classes that children can join at any time.
Live 1-on-1 tutoring, billed weekly on Sundays.
Self-paced classes with recorded lessons and up to 20 weeks of teacher support.
Groups and chat groups, which are discussion spaces with no live lessons.
Live classes take place on Zoom within Outschool. Your child will need a device with a camera and microphone, plus a stable internet connection. The popular classes page advertises a 4:1 student-teacher ratio. Outschool’s learning-needs pages say most live classes have six to eight learners or fewer.
Outschool may work well for homeschoolers, its first users, and kids who want a small group built around a favorite subject, such as a literature discussion or club. It may be less convenient if you want one program to manage your child’s full education. Each class is purchased separately from a different teacher.
We checked the enrollment flow in a browser. Class pages show the teacher’s price and schedule, but clicking Enroll Now opens a sign-up box for Google, Apple or email. You’ll need an account to see the marketplace fee and final checkout total.
Is Outschool legit?
Outschool is a legitimate company founded in 2015 and based in San Francisco. Its own pages give different figures for its reach: 100,000 to 140,000 live classes taught and 900,000 to 1.5 million learners.
Under Outschool’s terms, the company does not create or control classes. Parents contract directly with teachers, and Outschool disclaims liability for the conduct of teachers, parents and learners.
How Outschool vets teachers
Outschool reviews teacher applicants’ backgrounds, teaching experience, subject knowledge and motivation. Teachers must be at least 18, verify their identity with an ID scan and selfies, and live in one of eight supported countries.
Before teaching a first class, each teacher must pass a criminal background check covering violent and trust-and-safety offenses. Checks are renewed every year. A teacher who fails a check or lets it lapse is suspended immediately. Outschool says credentialed teachers lead more than 80% of its academic classes. Even so, review the profile and ratings for the specific teacher you’re considering.
Is Outschool safe for kids?
Outschool records every live class and checks each learner on camera. Recordings are encrypted, stored for 90 days and then deleted. Families agree not to share a recording before watching it.
At the start of class, the teacher must see each learner on camera before admitting them. If your child is uncomfortable on camera, they can skip the check-in after a brief verification with Outschool’s safety team. Zoom meetings are password protected. Messages and payments stay on Outschool, where the Trust and Safety team monitors for unwanted behavior.
Outschool recommends that parents supervise until their child can participate safely on their own.
Privacy and COPPA
Outschool says it follows the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) for children under 13 and applies the same protections to everyone on the site. It obtains verified parental consent before collecting a child’s data. In learner mode, third-party advertising and analytics companies cannot collect data for their own use. Parents can also request deletion. A search of news and FTC records on September 28, 2026, found no enforcement action, data breach or lawsuit naming Outschool.
Outschool asks parents to tell teachers about needed accommodations instead of sharing an IEP or 504 plan, which may contain identifying details.
Outschool pricing: is it worth it? Cost and membership
Outschool may be worth the cost if your family expects to use classes regularly and chooses teachers with a strong track record. You can buy classes one at a time or subscribe to a monthly credit membership. Membership used to be required; Outschool added pay-per-class after hearing feedback from families.
Paying per class
Teachers set their own prices. Outschool adds a marketplace fee calculated as a percentage of the price, which appears at checkout. Listings on September 28, 2026, included:
| Class | Price |
|---|---|
| Neurodivergent social club, ages 9 to 14 | $10 a session |
| Group classes on the gift card page | $18 to $24 a class |
| 6-week live reading and discussion course | $114 |
| Self-paced ADHD skills class, 8 lessons | $40 |
Weekly classes are charged every Sunday morning until you cancel.
Membership plans
Each credit is worth 50 cents and can be used for any class. Members do not pay the marketplace fee. They also get access to more than 100 self-paced classes, a priority waitlist and a free concierge service that recommends classes.
| Plan | Per month | Bonus credits a month | Outschool’s estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 credits | $40 | None | About 1 group class a week |
| 144 credits | $70 | 4 | About 2 a week |
| 248 credits | $120 | 8 | About 2 a week |
| 500 credits | $240 | 20 | About 4 a week |
| 800 credits | $380 | 40 | About 7 a week |
| 1285 credits | $600 | 85 | About 10 a week |
Credits roll over while your membership is active, and one plan covers all your children. A membership may make sense if your family takes classes every week. For occasional classes, paying per class avoids a monthly renewal.
On September 28, 2026, a sitewide banner offered $20 off a first class with code NEWTERM20. The plan page also showed $20 off the first month of every membership. Some Outschool landing pages still advertise a free first month, but their buttons lead to the $20-off plan page. Check the final price at checkout. Our Outschool promo code guide has more details.
Outschool refunds and cancellation policies
Outschool’s refund windows are short. Review the class details as soon as you enroll.
Class refunds
You can cancel a class for a refund within 24 hours of purchase, or before the class starts if that happens sooner. You can get a full refund at any time before class starts if the teacher cancels or changes the date or time. Missed meetings are not refunded. For self-paced classes, the refund window closes once your child enters the classroom. If you stop a weekly class, charges end with the next billing week.
If a class is not a good fit, US families can contact support within a week of the first class to request a voucher for the enrollment amount. This is available up to three times a year.
Membership cancellation
The help center says you can receive a full refund if you cancel within 24 hours of your first month’s purchase and have not used any credits. The Membership Terms say full refunds are unavailable once the membership period begins. Check with Outschool support before relying on a refund window.
The two pages also differ on whether unused credits remain available after cancellation, so consider using them first. Canceling your membership does not withdraw your child from classes. Outschool will keep charging your card for those classes until you withdraw.
Outschool classes for ADHD, autism and social skills
Outschool has pages for kids with ADHD, autism, giftedness and other learning differences. Class listings include a Learning Needs Support field that identifies the needs a teacher says they can support. Featured options include a social club for kids with autism, ADHD or anxiety, rated 4.9 from 1,703 reviews, and small-group social skills coaching for ages 11 to 13.
Before enrolling, you can message a teacher about your child’s needs or ask about a private section. Outschool says some teachers do not have formal training in learning differences. Parents of neurodivergent kids often praise the small classes and adaptable teachers.
Outschool classes are educational; they do not replace therapy or medical care. Some listings, including an ADHD skills class, state this directly. If you have questions about your child’s attention, learning or social needs, our guides to ADHD, autism and anxiety in children cover signs and treatment options.
Outschool alternatives
If you are comparing Outschool with other options, you can pair its classes with a local co-op or other learning resources. This can be especially useful for families of neurodivergent kids. Since each class is purchased separately, you can use Outschool for one subject and meet your child’s other learning needs elsewhere.
To get a feel for a teacher before enrolling in a full course, look for a trial class. For example, the teacher of one six-week reading and discussion course offers a $10 trial alongside the $114 course.
