At a glance
  • Billing or cost: Grow Therapy ($21 average insured session, pay per session) and Rula (typically $15 with insurance, no subscription) are the strongest swaps.
  • Medication Talkspace cannot prescribe, ADHD included: Talkiatry is psychiatrist-led, in-network with major insurers, and most patients pay around $30 a visit.
  • No insurance: Brightside’s $95-a-month psychiatry undercuts Talkspace’s $299-plus-$175 rates, and Open Path Collective offers $40 to $70 human therapy sessions.

Talkspace is one of the biggest online therapy platforms, and for insured members with a $0 copay it is hard to beat on price. Billing and auto-renewal disputes lead its complaints, followed by insurance and EAP charges that arrive as surprises. Therapists go quiet on the messaging plan, live sessions run 30 minutes, and the psychiatry side costs $299 self-pay and cannot prescribe controlled substances.

As of August 31, 2026, from each service’s published pages. Talkspace’s own self-pay rates for comparison: $69 to $109 a week for therapy, $299 psychiatry evaluation, $175 follow-ups.

Grow Therapy: cheapest insured sessions, your choice of provider

Grow is a directory across all 50 states: you filter by state, insurance, and specialty, see each provider’s price before booking, and pay per session with no subscription. Sessions average $21 with insurance, and both therapists and prescribers are on the platform, so medication management is available where Talkspace members had it. What you give up from Talkspace is the built-in messaging between sessions; Grow’s model is booked appointments. Grow’s own Medicaid page has you filter the directory by state and plan to see which therapists accept yours. If your Talkspace complaint was cost or a subscription renewing when you wanted out, browse Grow’s directory with your plan’s filter on.

Rula: pay-per-session with the widest range

Rula is in-network with 120+ plans, including Aetna, Anthem, most BCBS plans, Cigna, Optum, and UnitedHealthcare, plus Medicare and Medicaid in many states, and Kaiser by referral, with insured patients typically paying $15 a session. Its 23,000+ providers cover individual, couples, family, child, and teen therapy plus psychiatry, the widest service spread on this list, with self-pay at $150 for individual therapy, $165 for couples or family, and $225 psychiatry intakes with $175 follow-ups. Like Grow, it is session-based with no messaging model, and no tracked signup link exists for it yet, so the plain link above is the route. For families, or for a Medicaid plan Talkspace cannot take, Rula is the best fit here.

Talkiatry: psychiatrist-led medication care, ADHD included

Talkspace’s prescribers handle non-controlled medication only, so ADHD readers and anyone needing a benzodiazepine cannot get those prescriptions there. Talkiatry works differently: psychiatrists lead the care, its clinicians can prescribe controlled substances where state law allows telehealth prescribing (after an initial evaluation, with no guarantee of continuing a previous regimen), and it treats ages 5 and up. It is insurance-only, in-network with Optum, BCBS, Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare, with most patients paying around $30 a visit all-in, and it backs its verification: if Talkiatry wrongly says you are in-network, it covers the first appointment. Not taking Medicaid is the hard limit. Check your insurance with Talkiatry if medication is the reason you are leaving.

Brightside Health: self-pay psychiatry that costs less

Brightside charges $95 a month for psychiatry plus your pharmacy copay, $299 a month for therapy (four video sessions and unlimited messaging, extra sessions $59), or $349 for both. Against Talkspace’s $299 evaluation and $175 follow-ups, a self-pay reader on ongoing medication comes out well ahead. It is in-network with Aetna, Cigna, Ambetter, UnitedHealthcare, and BCBS across more than 150 million covered lives, and its Medicaid page says most patients pay $0 a session using Medicaid. The focus is anxiety and depression, narrower than a marketplace, and it is still a subscription. Check Brightside’s plans if meds plus messaging is your combination.

BetterHelp: therapy-only, biggest network

BetterHelp is the closest like-for-like swap: subscription therapy with messaging plus a weekly live session by video, phone, or chat, at $70 to $100 a week depending on location. As of 2026 it accepts 125+ insurance plans with an average $23 copay for eligible members, and income-based financial aid exists for self-payers. There is no psychiatry at all, and its base price is not lower than Talkspace’s $69 messaging plan, so switch for the weekly live session and the larger therapist pool. See BetterHelp’s pricing for your area.

Open Path Collective and 7 Cups: low-cost and free options

Open Path is a nonprofit network for people without workable insurance: a one-time $65 lifetime membership, then $40 to $70 individual sessions with licensed member therapists, online or in person, $30 with student interns. Availability depends on which therapists have openings, and it is meant for readers who cannot afford market rates.

7 Cups offers free 24/7 chat with trained volunteer listeners, plus a paid messaging-only tier priced under $50 a week. Listeners are not clinicians, so it is support rather than treatment, but it is the only free option here and useful while you sort out coverage elsewhere.

Is Talkspace still right for some people?

Yes, and the survey data says so: in HelpGuide’s 2026 user survey, 87 percent of Talkspace therapy users were likely to recommend it, 82 percent rated the pricing good or very good value, and 78 percent paid through insurance, where copays average $10 and often hit $0.1 If your plan covers it, messaging-first therapy suits you, and your billing has been correct, staying put is defensible; our Talkspace review covers the full experience, and check your coverage with Talkspace if you never verified it. The complaints that drive people out show up across review sites, though: Trustpilot’s one-star reviews center on post-cancellation charges and refund denials, and App Store reviewers describe out-of-network surprises and therapists unresponsive for days. If that has been your experience, the alternatives above are the better fit.

It depends. Cost with insurance: Grow Therapy or Rula. Medication, including ADHD: Talkiatry. Self-pay medication: Brightside. Therapy-only with a bigger network: BetterHelp. No insurance and low budget: Open Path.

What is cheaper than Talkspace?

With insurance, Grow ($21 average) and Rula (about $15) usually beat Talkspace’s self-pay tiers, though Talkspace’s own insured copays average $10. Without insurance, Open Path’s $40 to $70 sessions undercut everything except free peer support.

Which Talkspace competitors take Medicaid?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Talkspace itself does not accept Medicaid. Rula takes Medicaid in many states, Grow Therapy in some, and Brightside covers therapy and psychiatry under Medicaid with most patients paying $0 a session.

What about ADHD medication?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Talkspace does not prescribe stimulants. Talkiatry can, where state law allows telehealth prescribing and after an evaluation; an in-person psychiatrist is the other route.

Is there a free Talkspace alternative?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

7 Cups’ volunteer listener chat is free around the clock. It is peer support, not therapy; for actual treatment on a small budget, Open Path Collective is the closest thing.

Is BetterHelp better than Talkspace?

They tie on more than they differ; BetterHelp has the larger therapist pool and a weekly live session standard, Talkspace has psychiatry and typically better insurance economics. Our Talkspace vs BetterHelp comparison settles it by situation.
