- Most free autism training online is for adults. AFIRM, OCALI’s Autism Internet Modules (AIM) and the WHO Caregiver Skills Training cost nothing. AFIRM and AIM give a free certificate.

Free, ongoing online classes built for autistic children are scarce. Outschool is a marketplace where independent teachers run live video classes for ages 3 to 18 and set their own prices. A family can pay nothing for a parent’s training and $10 to $25 a session for a child’s weekly social group.

Free autism courses parents and caregivers can take at home
Families can take free courses at home, including the WHO Caregiver Skills Training and Autism Navigator’s toddler course. Some parent centers also run free virtual workshops.
WHO Caregiver Skills Training
The World Health Organization built its Caregiver Skills Training (CST) for families of children with developmental delays or disabilities. Autism Speaks supported the work. It teaches parents to use play and daily routines to build communication, engagement, behavior and daily living skills. Autism Speaks says it costs families nothing. WHO put the training online in March 2022.1 The online version is self-paced, with pre-recorded lessons, videos and quizzes. You sign up on WHO Academy.
Autism Navigator: About Autism in Toddlers
Autism Navigator courses come from the Florida State University Autism Institute. Its first course, About Autism in Toddlers, is free to the public. A professional version of the toddler course with a certificate and CEUs costs $25. Its $95 How-To Guide for Families is free if you attend a companion webinar.
Parent centers and free webinars
Nearly 100 Parent Training and Information Centers and Community Parent Resource Centers serve families of children with disabilities from birth to 26.2 The Center for Parent Information and Resources site lists them by state. Understood calls them a free resource. Minnesota’s PACER Center lists virtual trainings through December 2026. Its Zoom sign-up for an October session had no payment step.
Online classes on autism for teachers and school staff
Educators have the most free autism training to choose from. Certificates of completion are mostly free. Continuing education or graduate credit usually costs extra.
AFIRM modules
AFIRM (Autism Focused Intervention Resources and Modules) is hosted by UNC’s Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute. It began as a 2014 to 2016 project funded by the US Department of Education. Each module covers planning, using and monitoring one evidence-based practice for autistic learners from birth to 22. The catalog has 28 practice modules, such as visual supports and social narratives. It also has 5 modules for paraeducators and 6 for toddlers. AFIRM doesn’t say how long a module takes.
A post-assessment score of 70 or more earns a free certificate, which doesn’t meet BCBA requirements. CEUs and BCBA Type-II CEs cost $35 a module, non-refundable, through UNC’s Friday Center.3
Autism Internet Modules (AIM)
AIM comes from OCALI, a project of the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio. It has 50 self-paced modules with case studies, videos and pre- and post-assessments. It is for anyone who works with or lives with an autistic person, teachers included. You need a free account, and the modules and certificate cost nothing.4 Graduate credit through Ashland University is optional and paid.
CDC Watch Me!
CDC’s Watch Me! Celebrating Milestones and Sharing Concerns is a 1-hour, 4-module course for early care and education providers. It covers developmental milestones in general, including how to talk with parents about a child’s development. Finishing gives a printable certificate of clock hours. CDC also lists 0.1 CEU through CDC TRAIN (course WB5027) with no fee after an 80% post-assessment.5 The CDC TRAIN course page says the CEU steps must be finished by August 1, 2029.
Coursera course for schools
The University of Colorado offers Managing ADHD, Autism, Learning Disabilities, and Concussion in School on Coursera. The course is free to enroll and takes about 9 hours over 4 modules. It had 55,633 learners and a 4.8 rating on October 19.6 Coursera says materials, assignments and the certificate need its paid certificate option.

Where autistic kids and teens can take online classes
Ongoing free online autism classes for kids are rare. Most free options are general classes or local groups.
Free options for kids
Outschool hosts free events for any family with an account, and some of them are social clubs. Some teachers list classes at no cost or offer coupons. Messaging a teacher before enrolling is free.7 An Outschool search for free autism classes on October 19 returned only paid listings. Its Try for Free button opens a free account without enrolling you in a class.
The Miracle Project, a Los Angeles nonprofit, runs mixed improv and social skills groups with neurotypical peers. Its class for ages 11 to 14 meets on Zoom on Sundays. Families fill in an intake form and then get a free trial class. Later classes are paid through California Regional Center funding or weekly private pay. No price is published. Khan Academy is free for self-paced academics, with no live group. Some libraries and local Autism Society affiliates have run online groups for teens in recent years, so ask yours about current dates.

How Outschool classes work for autistic learners
Classes run on Zoom, which has live captions. A child can step away or go off camera after an on-camera check-in. Children who are uncomfortable on camera can use another way to verify. Live classes are recorded for safety.
You can note your child’s needs on their learner profile and message the teacher about accommodations. Outschool asks parents not to send IEP or 504 documents. Some teachers may not have a formal background in teaching neurodivergent learners, so read each profile before booking.
Paying for Outschool autism classes
Outschool lets you pay per class with no membership. Plans start at $40 a month for 80 credits, which Outschool says covers about one group class a week. Members skip the marketplace fee and get 100 or more self-paced classes. Unused credits roll over. As of October 19, code MEMBER20 takes $20 off the first month before the plan renews at full price. Code NEWTERM20 takes $20 off a first class, with additional terms.
Weekly classes bill on Sunday mornings. You can cancel for a refund within 24 hours of buying, or within 24 hours of the Sunday renewal for weekly classes.8 US families can ask for a voucher if a class isn’t a good fit. The voucher is worth what they paid, and the request must come within a week of the first live class. They can do this up to three times a year, and vouchers expire after 90 days.9
Parents complain most about Outschool’s billing, especially the credit membership, leftover credits and weekly charges that renew on their own. Read our Outschool review for more on the platform.
When a paid class makes sense
Outschool’s social clubs give an autistic child a weekly group of peers to practice with. Most of the free courses above are built for adults. Two groups we checked had sold out several times. Our autism overview covers the basics.
