BetterHelp is a subscription-based online therapy platform offering video, phone, and text-based therapy services for teens, adults, and couples, in the U.S. and internationally. While BetterHelp offers financial aid, cash-pay costs can still be high, with therapy plans ranging from $260–$400 monthly.

To help, we created a guide to reducing your monthly cost with BetterHelp. Plus, we’ve got a special discount code—choosingtherapy—that you can use to receive 20% off your first month of service. This at least gives you a chance to see if the service is right for you at a lower cost.

Whether you decide to continue with BetterHelp or explore other online therapy options, this offer allows you to make a more informed decision without breaking the bank.

How Do I Use a Promo Code on BetterHelp?

To use a discount code on BetterHelp, simply enter the code when you checkout. Or, you can click this link to the BetterHelp homepage and the code will be applied to your account automatically.

Keep in mind that you can only use one discount code per transaction and most coupon codes are designed to be used at initial sign-up rather than by existing customers.

How to Find More BetterHelp Promo Codes

What Is BetterHelp?

BetterHelp is a subscription-based online therapy platform that offers services for adults, teenagers, and couples. Therapy sessions are available by video, audio, and live messaging. In addition to therapy, BetterHelp offers a few extra features like educational workshops, a digital journal, and worksheets. One of our favorite features about BetterHelp is the unlimited messaging space between you and your therapist. They should respond at least once per day, but it’s also a great place to take note of what you want to discuss during sessions.

During our review of BetterHelp, we found it to be an excellent solution for those needing a little help with depression, anxiety, or life stressors.

Types of Therapy Available on BetterHelp

The main BetterHelp platform offers online therapy plans for adults only; however, BetterHelp operates subsidiary brands Teen Counseling and Regain for teens and couples, respectively. BetterHelp’s 20% off discount code works for both Teen Counseling and Regain.

Learn more in our review of Teen Counseling and our full Regain Couples Counseling review.

How Much Does BetterHelp Cost?

BetterHelp costs $260–$400 monthly depending on your location and therapist availability. This monthly cost includes a weekly therapy session, one weekly educational webinar, and unlimited access to therapist messaging and the extra features in the BetterHelp app.

BetterHelp doesn’t accept insurance, but it does offer financial aid to those who can’t afford therapy. When I used BetterHelp, I was curious to see if I would qualify for any financial aid. I assumed I wouldn’t but it was worth a shot—I was pleasantly surprised to see I received 10% off my monthly cost, saving me $36 monthly.

Can I Pay for Sessions Individually?

Yes, you can purchase individual therapy sessions on BetterHelp at a flat rate of $110 per session. However, you can’t opt for this during sign-up. Instead, you’ll need to sign up under the usual BetterHelp plan for a month, then you can change your account to session-by-session billing in your settings.

Is There a Free Trial?

No, BetterHelp doesn’t offer a free trial. However, ChoosingTherapy.com readers receive a special offer of 20% off their first month which can help lower the initial price. Sign up using this link to get the code automatically applied, or use discount code “choosingtherapy” to get 20% off your first month. Also, consider signing up for financial aid through BetterHelp.

Does BetterHelp Accept Insurance?

No, BetterHelp doesn’t accept insurance, though that could be coming in the near future. If you want to use your insurance benefits for therapy, consider some of the best online therapy options for insurance.

Can I Use an FSA or HSA to Pay for BetterHelp?

Yes, using your FSA or HSA funds for BetterHelp is simple. Just enter your card details during checkout as you would for a debit or credit card. Before using these funds, you should check with your plan to ensure that BetterHelp is a covered expense.

Does BetterHelp Offer Financial Assistance?

Yes, BetterHelp has a financial aid program designed to help reduce therapy costs for those in difficult situations. At any time, you can apply to receive a 10%–40% discount on your monthly fees. Approval is based on a number of factors including your income, employment status, and many other metrics.

Does BetterHelp Have a Maintenance Plan?

Yes, BetterHelp has a maintenance plan for $200 monthly that reduces the frequency of therapy sessions to once per month instead of weekly. It’s a great choice for those who have made some progress and feel they don’t need as much support while still keeping regular check-ins. The maintenance plan still includes therapist messaging and unlimited access to the app.

BetterHelp Plans & Services

BetterHelp offers three different ways of paying for therapy: The standard monthly subscription, session-by-session, and the monthly maintenance plan. In addition to therapy for adults, BetterHelp offers services for teens and couples through their platforms Teen Counseling and Regain.

Here are details about BetterHelp pricing plans:

  • Standard subscription: $260–$400 monthly
  • Pay-per-session price: $110 per session
  • Maintenance plan (monthly sessions): $200 monthly
  • Regain couples therapy cost: $260–$400 monthly
  • Teen Counseling cost: $260–$400 monthly

The “choosingtherapy” Promo code will also work for Regain and Teen Counseling, if those services better fit your therapy needs.

How to Sign Up for BetterHelp

To sign up for BetterHelp, just head over to the BetterHelp home page and claim your 20% discount off your first month of service. Pay attention to the onboarding questions and fill them out mindfully to be matched with a therapist. Once you submit your intake questionnaire, you’ll be matched with a therapist in as little as a couple hours, or up to a few days.

There are some techniques and strategies you can use to find a good therapist on BetterHelp, such as being mindful and honest in your intake questionnaire and thinking deeply about your reasons for seeking therapy. Plus, you can look through a list of therapists instead of being automatically matched if you prefer.

Getting the Most Out of BetterHelp

Therapy isn’t cheap, no matter what platform you’re using. So, it’s important to spend your time wisely and utilize all the resources available to you to get the most out of your time in therapy. Before you begin your search for a therapist, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the major types of therapy and have a good understanding of your goals and what you’re hoping to achieve.

To help the matching algorithm get the best picture of your situation, be as honest and thorough as you can during the initial questionnaire. And, if you end up meeting with a therapist who turns out to be a poor fit, it’s very easy to switch therapists on BetterHelp.

Other Ways to Save Money on BetterHelp

Aside from discount codes and financial aid, there are a few more strategies you can use to maximize your time and savings with BetterHelp.

Try a New Therapist if You Feel Stuck

BetterHelp makes it very easy to change therapists, and finding a good therapist fit often requires changing therapists a few times. When I used BetterHelp, I had to change therapists four times before I found a good fit for me.

Follow these steps to change therapists on BetterHelp:

  • Log in to your BetterHelp account on the mobile app or desktop web app
  • Navigate to your BetterHelp account settings
  • Locate the “My therapist” section of information
  • Click the button to request a new therapist
  • Select the preferences that you would like to be considered
  • Read through a list of new potential therapists and select one

Consider the Maintenance Plan

If you feel like you don’t need weekly sessions, you could use BetterHelp’s maintenance plan. This plan offers one session per month at a discounted rate of $200 monthly.

To swap to the maintenance plan, simply log in to your BetterHelp account, navigate to account settings, and select “Manage subscription.” It’s worth noting that you can’t sign up for the maintenance plan initially, but existing users can switch to it at any time.

Utilize Therapist Messaging

One of the foremost benefits of using the BetterHelp platform is that plans always include unlimited messaging with your therapist. This is a fantastic way to send introductory messages, share goals, and talk out challenges outside of sessions. Being able to cover things in-between sessions helps to improve session efficiency and maximize the value you’re receiving.

Benefits of Online Therapy

Online therapy is far and away more convenient and accessible than in-person therapy. Rather than travel to an office, hang out in a waiting room, and physically attend a therapy session, online therapy allows you to work on your mental health from the comfort and privacy of your own home.

Evidence indicates that online therapy can be just as effective as traditional in-person therapy. While there are some considerations and best practices to keep in mind, as long as your problems are well-suited to online treatment, you can receive just as high-quality care from home as you can in a physical office.
