Best Mental Health EHRs of 2024

In our experience, My Best Practice offers the best tools for managing a practice available today. After testing this therapist EHR across two reviews over the last couple of years, I found that its innovative clinical documentation and tracking system – especially with the bundled Wiley integration – is second to none. My Best Practice’s other features integrate seamlessly and provide a fantastic user experience overall.

TherapyAppointment offers some of the best affordability compared to the number of features offered by any of the best EHRs for mental health. Its automatic intake process and Zoom-based telehealth are both solid and reliable. One downfall is that TherapyAppointment does not have the documentation “bells and whistles” that more premium solutions offer. TherapyAppointment doesn’t have Wiley integration and its form customization tools are a bit lacking compared to My Best Practice, but the other features hold up very well. Overall, TherapyAppointment is an excellent solution for those that are willing to sacrifice slightly in feature depth in favor of affordability.

After multiple reviews and a couple of years working with SimplePractice, I can safely say that its one of the best of the best when it comes to therapist EHR design. Ease of use and smart automation is at the core of SimplePractice; every feature has been automated in some way to eliminate extra work that specifically faces mental health workers. Everything from client intake to documentation to billing can be handled quickly and easily.

SimplePractice’s greatest drawback has always been its price. While there’s features for just about anything a practice would need, the price of premium feature stacks up quickly. It’s possible to find comparable features at a lower price, but its hard to beat SimplePractice’s seamlessness.

TheraPlatform won’t be for everyone. For the most part, there’s better options out there for day-to-day use. TheraPlatform can’t keep up in terms of clinical documentation quality and automation, but for providers that primarily use telehealth for sessions, TheraPlatform’s telehealth platform is the best available. Useful integrations and in-session tools are thoughtfully designed, and the ability to play therapy-related games with children during a session might just make the difference in keeping attention up.

That said, if you don’t need the telehealth features, you’ll want to look at other options.

While it may not have the most innovative user interface or overall design, TheraNest would be perfectly adequate for the majority of tasks. What makes it truly advantageous is its by-the-caseload pricing structure. So, if your practice only has a handful of clients – less than 30, ideally – then you can get the full spectrum of services at a potentially lower rate than you’d find elsewhere.

Over the two sessions I’ve been able to work with TheraNest, I’ve never been blown away with what it offers, but it’s a solid contender that may end up being the perfect fit for many.

I’ve spent a couple of reviews working with TherapyNotes at this point and it’s always struck me as a very solid mental health EHR. It has good features, and could potentially be a great choice for any practice, but I feel like its practice management features and robust reporting capabilities are particularly useful for multi-provider practices. At first glance, the user interface may appear simplistic at first, however, this ultimately aids accessibility and usability. While it may lack some of the customization options, TherapyNotes’ cost is hard to beat considering the features available straight out of the box.

CounSol.com definitely has a throwback design. While it may not hold up to modern standards stylistically speaking, it does have solid functionality. While the unusual layout may not be ideal for everyone, some may find it meshes well with their workflow. As well, it has great options for psychiatrists with built-in electronic prescription capabilities. CounSol.com also has some of the most helpful and responsive customer support in the industry.

While it may not have the most innovative features, Sessions Health has a clean and intuitive design that’s exceptionally easy to manage. Its straightforward pricing system makes it a great choice for those looking for simplicity. While it can’t quite compete with the more advanced behavioral health EHRs out there, I found Sessions Health to be a great choice for practitioners who may be looking for a simple and affordable solution.
