Sessions Health is an electronic health records (EHR) system focused on providing a simple records and practice management solution to mental or behavioral health private practices. It allows practices to manage their client caseloads, calendars, and scheduling, as well as clinical documentation and assessment. A subscription starts at $39 monthly and includes all features available.

Based on my testing, Sessions Health excels in offering simple, no-fuss solutions. Sessions Health is a great choice for those who want a straightforward, affordable option without a telehealth platform. We encountered a handful of technical issues with Sessions Health, but nothing debilitating. Sessions Health earned 4 out of 5 stars in our independent review.  Overall, Sessions Health offers a good balance of functionality and simplicity which allows common tasks in a mental health practice to be completed efficiently and easily.

If you’re looking for some of the more deep customization and automation features that Sessions Health lacks, My Best Practice is one of our favorite mental health EHRs that offers a value-packed and well-rounded solution for any almost practice.

Client Management

Sessions Health offers a thoughtfully organized, intuitive system for managing client information—one that feels more natural to use than most EHRs I’ve tested. The layout is clean and responsive, with multiple pathways for adding clients and minimal required fields up front, making batch entry easy.

Once a client is added, the platform creates a guided setup wizard that walks you through the most important onboarding steps: inviting the client to the portal, selecting intake forms, setting billing preferences, and adding client contacts. This guided flow helps reduce missed steps and ensures nothing falls through the cracks. Clients can easily be added to groups, couples, or families.

Each client’s chart is neatly segmented into tabs for documentation, billing, demographics, treatment planning, and more. There’s also a sidebar showing quick-reference info like upcoming appointments and outstanding documents. Despite its visual simplicity, nothing about the system feels limited; important tools are never more than a click away. Dedicated activity logs and audit trail exports help you stay audit-ready at all times.

If you’re migrating from another platform, Sessions Health offers free import services, including client charts, progress notes, and even calendar events, handled by a responsive support team.

With its user-friendly design and well-thought-out organization, Sessions Health earns a well-deserved 4 out of 5 stars in the “Client Management” category of our scoring criteria.

Client Forms & Intake

Sessions Health offers a well-rounded intake and forms system that balances simplicity and flexibility well. The platform includes a library of over 35 intake templates out of the box, covering a wide range of needs from standard assessments like the PHQ and ASRS to safety plans, general diagnostic evaluations, and more. Each template is fully editable, and you can also build custom forms from scratch to match your practice’s workflow.

Forms are manually enabled by the clinician before use, helping to avoid clutter from unnecessary templates. Once your practice’s form library is curated, sending forms is seamless, whether during initial client setup using the client wizard, or later through the client chart. All forms can be completed by the client through the client portal or by the clinician during the session.

The form customization tool is clean and functional, though it doesn’t reach the level of depth or intuitive nature of some competitors like TherapyAppointment or My Best Practice. Still, for practices looking for an easy-to-manage form system that covers essential needs without feeling overwhelming, Sessions Health does a very solid job.

Because of its good selection of templates, real-time client progress tracking, and ease of use, we’ve awarded Sessions Health 4 out of 5 stars in the “Client Forms & Intake” category of our scoring criteria.

Calendar & Scheduling

Sessions Health offers a genuinely smooth and intuitive scheduling experience that feels thoughtfully designed for busy practices of most sizes. The calendar is clean and easy to navigate, with multiple view options and helpful filters for clinician, service type, and even physical room assignments, which is a nice feature for preventing double-booking if you’re running an in-person practice.

Creating appointments is fast and straightforward. You can assign appointment types, set specific service codes, and even customize fee levels by clinician. A particularly useful feature is that all appointment reminders are automatically adjusted to the client’s time zone, which is invaluable for telehealth-heavy practices.

Recurring appointments and waitlists are fully supported, and clients can request or book appointments directly through the client portal. Better still, Sessions Health includes both email and text reminders at no extra cost. Most platforms we’ve used tend to charge extra for these.

The flow of creating and managing appointments feels natural, with little friction. Unlike some systems where you’re forced to jump between pages, you can add new clients directly within the appointment creation flow, keeping everything efficient. For providers who also manage their own calendars, the two-way calendar sync with external systems like Google Calendar is a big time-saver.

With its rich feature set, natural workflow, and flexibility for practices of all sizes, Sessions Health easily earns 5 out of 5 stars in the Calendar & Scheduling category of our scoring criteria.

Treatment Planning & Notetaking

Sessions Health offers a fast and fairly flexible experience when it comes to treatment planning and progress notes. Notes can be entered directly from the appointment on the calendar, or from multiple other points, keeping documentation workflows smooth and efficient.

Out of the box, you’ll find seven ready-to-use progress note templates, including BIRP, DAP, SOAP, EMDR, Group Therapy, Discharge, and a general progress note. All of these can be customized to fit your practice’s documentation style. Treatment plans and note templates use the same form builder we saw with intake forms. It’s decently robust, allowing you to add a range of field types such as dropdowns, multiple choice questions, sliders, Likert scales, file uploads, and more,  providing good flexibility for most practices, even if the builder itself isn’t the most intuitive I’ve ever used.

Image of Sessions Health progress note completion from calendar
Click here for the previous slide. Click here for the next slide.

For treatment planning, Sessions Health doesn’t offer as many pre-built treatment plan templates as I’m used to seeing. However, the one that’s included is simple and sufficient for most needs, plus, you can create or edit however you’d like. Treatment plan goals can carry directly into your progress notes for continuity of care, which is a nice touch. You can also set reminders to complete treatment plans and assessments, helping to maintain compliance over time.

While there’s no integration with Wiley Treatment Planners or similar automation tools at this time, a representative with Sessions Health told me they’re actively developing AI-powered tools like note and treatment plan suggestions. Many of the best mental health EHRs are already implementing AI features, so it’ll be interesting to see what Sessions Health has in store.

Overall, the system covers the essential workflows well, with reliable automation and a clean, user-friendly design. While it doesn’t break much new ground, it gets the job done efficiently. We will continue to award Sessions Health 4 out of 5 stars in the “Client Payment Methods” category of our scoring criteria.

Practice Management & Reports

Sessions Health offers a solid toolkit for managing both solo and group practices, scaling comfortably from one clinician to teams of up to 200 providers. According to the company, they currently serve practices with over 100 clinicians, and they’ve steadily been adding quality-of-life improvements to help larger teams stay coordinated and efficient.

User roles and permissions are well thought out, allowing practices to control access between roles like billers, schedulers, supervisors, and clinicians. Admins can further restrict practitioner access to billing functions, protecting sensitive financial data and keeping team workflows clean.

Reporting tools are comprehensive for day-to-day operations, with dashboards that offer insights into revenue trends, insurance billing status, appointment metrics, and more. While Sessions Health’s reporting isn’t as deeply customizable as some systems we’ve tested, it covers the essential data points practices need to track performance and stay organized.

All told, Sessions Health delivers a well-rounded practice management system that balances simplicity with flexibility, even for growing or larger practices. We’ve maintained Sessions Health’s 4 out of 5 star score in the “Practice Management & Reports” category of our scoring criteria.

Customer Service & Training

Sessions Health’s customer support system feels genuinely responsive and well thought out. In my testing, I didn’t run into any issues that required contacting support, but it’s clear that the options are there when you need them.

Their dedicated email support team typically responds within two business hours, and there’s also the option to schedule personalized demos or ongoing training sessions for hands-on guidance. I found their knowledge base to be pretty impressive, with over 50 searchable video tutorials and a wide range of articles covering nearly every aspect of the platform.

Sessions Health also goes the extra mile during onboarding with free data imports from other EHR systems, including the ability to backfill provider calendars with past appointments and import existing progress notes—services that many competitors charge for or skip entirely.

Altogether, Sessions Health offers a customer service and training experience that feels genuinely supportive, making it easy for practices to get up and running smoothly. We’ve awarded Sessions Health 5 out of 5 stars in the “Customer Service & Training” category of our scoring criteria.

Cost & Pricing Plans

Sessions Health costs $39 monthly, keeping its pricing refreshingly simple. For the base price, you get full access to the EHR platform for one clinician, with unlimited clients, unlimited sessions, and unlimited document storage. There’s also a generous 30-day free trial to explore all features before committing.

For growing teams, adding more clinicians is straightforward at $29 per month per additional practitioner.

  • Full EHR access for 1 clinician

User Reviews

Out of just over 100 user reviews across major aggregate sites, I couldn’t find a single rating below three stars. While the pool of reviews is modest, the overwhelmingly positive sentiment is notable; users seem genuinely satisfied with Sessions Health.

Why You Can Trust My Review

“I personally tested Sessions Health to get a firsthand feel for its features, workflows, and overall user experience. Throughout my time using the platform, I explored everything from client intake and documentation to billing and telehealth. I was also able to get in touch with someone from the Sessions Health team, giving me insight into recent updates and behind-the-scenes improvements.

While the platform isn’t without its quirks, I found Sessions Health to be a smooth, intuitive system that delivers on its promise of simplicity. Its customer support, in particular, stood out; fast response times and a thorough, well-organized help center make onboarding easy.

Based on my testing and research, I believe Sessions Health is a great fit for solo clinicians and group practices alike, especially for those who appreciate a clean, clutter-free workflow with responsive support and predictable pricing.”

History & News

Sessions Health logo
  • Founded: 2018
  • Headquarters: Minneapolis, MN

Sessions Health was founded in 2018 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with a mission to provide simple, affordable, and accessible practice management tools for behavioral health professionals. The company is privately held and has intentionally kept its focus tight, prioritizing the needs of therapists, counselors, and mental health providers over pursuing larger, more generalized healthcare markets.

Over the years, Sessions Health has gradually expanded its capabilities based on customer feedback, adding insurance claims processing, improving reporting, and launching its integrated telehealth platform (now supporting up to four participants). Notably, they’ve made a point to maintain a clean, intuitive interface while regularly releasing new features without bloating the system.

A representative I was able to consult with states the company emphasizes ethical responsibility, inclusivity, and customer-centric development, actively incorporating suggestions from its user base. According to the Sessions Health team, they are currently developing AI-driven features such as note and treatment plan suggestions, signaling ongoing investment in automation to reduce clinician workload.

Today, Sessions Health serves practices of all sizes, from solo clinicians to groups with over 100 providers, and continues to grow steadily through word-of-mouth and practitioner referrals.
