At a glance
  • BetterHelp offers limited access to somatic therapy. Somatic Therapy is one of 20 options in its public directory’s Clinical approach filter, and some therapist profiles mention Somatic Experiencing training. However, the signup questionnaire does not ask which therapy approach you want.
  • On September 8, 2026, the filter for Somatic Therapy showed 14 therapists in Texas, 14 in Florida, 10 in Illinois, 4 in New York, 2 in Washington, and none in California.
  • Somatic therapy costs the same as any other BetterHelp subscription: $70 to $100 per week for one 30- to 45-minute session plus messaging. Rula and Grow Therapy let you filter for somatic therapy before booking and bill insurance at average rates of about $15 and $21 per session.

BetterHelp’s public therapist directory includes a Somatic Therapy filter. Some of the therapists shown describe body-based treatment or Somatic Experiencing training in their profiles.

The questionnaire BetterHelp uses to match members does not ask about treatment approach. The most practical option is to search the public directory first, identify therapists who mention somatic work, and then confirm your match after joining.

BetterHelp costs $70 to $100 per week and includes therapy by video, phone, or live chat. Open BetterHelp’s questionnaire after searching the directory, or follow the steps below to find therapists who list somatic therapy in your state.

What is somatic therapy, and who may benefit from it?

Somatic therapy is a body-centered form of psychotherapy that focuses on the relationship between physical sensations, emotions, and mental health. It may combine traditional talk therapy with deep breathing, relaxation exercises, meditation, movement, body awareness, and other physical techniques.

The approach is used for concerns including trauma, stress, anxiety, depression, grief, addiction, and chronic pain.

Named forms of somatic therapy include Somatic Experiencing, developed by Peter Levine in the 1970s, Hakomi, and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy.

Does BetterHelp offer somatic therapy?

Partly. BetterHelp’s public directory at betterhelp.com/therapists has a Clinical approach filter with 20 options. Somatic Therapy appears alongside CBT, DBT, Trauma-Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and Hypnotherapy.

When you select Somatic Therapy, the page URL changes to include the somatic filter. However, Somatic Experiencing, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and Hakomi do not have separate filters. You must read the individual therapist profiles to find those approaches.

For example:

  • One therapist licensed in Texas and Florida with 15 years of experience lists Somatic Experiencing and a 200-hour yoga teacher registration.
  • A Florida clinician with 20 years of experience says she is trained in Somatic Experiencing.
  • An Illinois counselor lists CBT, DBT, mindfulness-based therapy, ACT, and somatic-based therapy.

BetterHelp groups all of these descriptions under the same Somatic Therapy label.

BetterHelp also has two educational pages about somatic therapy, updated in March and October 2025. They explain the approach and its techniques but do not clearly say that BetterHelp provides somatic therapy or explain how to request it. The pages generally say that people may find a somatic therapist in person or through an online platform such as BetterHelp.

How many BetterHelp therapists list somatic therapy?

BetterHelp does not publish a total. Its directory displays 14 therapist cards per page without showing the total number of results.

The following counts show the number of first-page therapist cards displayed after applying the Somatic Therapy filter on September 8, 2026.

State Therapists shown with the Somatic Therapy filter
Texas 14, a full page
Florida 14, a full page
Illinois 10
New York 4
Washington 2
California 0 across three separate page loads

The unfiltered California directory showed a full page of 14 therapist cards. The empty somatic result may mean no California therapists had selected that tag, or it may have been a display problem. Check the directory for your state before deciding.

BetterHelp’s questionnaire says its network includes more than 32,000 licensed and vetted therapists with different techniques and approaches. The state counts above represent only a small sample of that network.

How can you find a somatic therapist on BetterHelp?

We reviewed all four sections of BetterHelp’s questionnaire that appear before account creation on September 8, 2026.

The questionnaire asks about your country, language, identity, religion, therapy history, health, mood, sleep, finances, and preferred communication method. It also asks why you are seeking therapy. One option is “I have experienced trauma.”

No question asks which therapy approach you want, and there is no free-text field. The closest relevant options are “I have experienced trauma” and a preference for communicating mostly through phone or video sessions.

To look for a somatic therapist:

  1. Visit betterhelp.com/therapists and select your state.
  2. Open the Clinical approach filter.
  3. Select Somatic Therapy and apply the filter.
  4. Open each therapist’s full profile and read the biography. The somatic tag does not appear on the summary card.
  5. Look for a named approach such as Somatic Experiencing instead of relying only on a general reference to somatic techniques.
  6. Complete BetterHelp’s signup questionnaire. If accurate for you, select the option stating that you have experienced trauma.
  7. Choose video when possible so the therapist can observe your posture, breathing, and physical responses.
  8. After matching, message the therapist and ask about their training and use of body-based therapy.
  9. Request a new match if the therapist does not provide the approach you want.

BetterHelp says members can switch therapists without an additional fee whenever the match is not right. Matching generally takes a few hours to a few days, depending on availability.

The public directory does not include a booking button. We could not confirm whether members can request a specific therapist by name during signup.

Users describe another challenge: a therapist may list somatic therapy as one of several approaches without explaining their level of training. Some recommend checking Somatic Experiencing International’s practitioner directory. They also warn that “somatic” is sometimes used broadly by wellness providers without formal training.

How does BetterHelp verify somatic therapy training?

BetterHelp requires every therapist to hold an active professional license, have a relevant degree, and possess at least three years of experience.

However, BetterHelp does not describe a separate verification process for the Somatic Therapy directory tag. The approach appears to reflect information therapists provide in their own profiles.

There is also no single official accreditation required to practice somatic therapy. Specific training programs offer their own credentials.

Somatic Experiencing International’s practitioner training takes approximately two and a half to three years. It includes beginning, intermediate, and advanced modules, as well as required personal sessions. Clinicians who complete the program receive the Somatic Experiencing Practitioner title.

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy offers three training levels.

A BetterHelp therapist who mentions Somatic Experiencing may have completed the full credential or only part of the training. Ask what training the therapist completed and how many clients they have treated using the approach.

How much does somatic therapy cost on BetterHelp?

The Somatic Therapy tag does not change BetterHelp’s price.

BetterHelp’s cost page, updated July 22, 2026, lists a price of $70 to $100 per week. Subscriptions may be billed weekly or monthly, producing a total of $280 to $400 over four weeks.

The subscription includes:

  • One live session per week
  • Sessions lasting approximately 30 to 45 minutes
  • Video, phone, or live-chat appointments
  • Messaging between sessions

BetterHelp bases the exact price on your location, referral source, preferences, and therapist availability. Some members qualify for financial aid based on income and employment.

Choosing Therapy’s link provides 20% off the first month. An older BetterHelp page about somatic therapy lists a weekly price of $65 to $90, but the July 2026 cost page provides the newer rate.

Insurance-eligible members pay an average copay of $23 per session. Insurance coverage includes one live session per week but does not include messaging. Our BetterHelp insurance guide explains accepted plans and state availability.

How does BetterHelp compare with other somatic therapy options?

Service Somatic filter before booking Without insurance With insurance Session length
BetterHelp Yes, through the public directory only $70 to $100 per week $23 average copay for eligible members 30 to 45 minutes
Talkspace Dedicated somatic therapy page and a questionnaire preference for specialist expertise $69 to $109 per week $0 copay for most insured members 30 minutes, up to four per month
Rula Yes, under Treatment approach $150 per session About $15 per session Set by the provider
Grow Therapy Yes, under More filters $75 to $250 or more per session About $21 per session Set by the provider
Local somatic specialist Somatic Experiencing International directory $100 to $225 per session Often not covered Set by the practitioner

Prices were checked on each company’s website on September 8, 2026. The local price range comes from Choosing Therapy’s somatic therapy guide, updated in July 2026. There is no insurance billing code specifically for somatic therapy.

How long are BetterHelp sessions?

BetterHelp says live sessions generally last 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the therapist and client’s preferences.

The best-known randomized trial of Somatic Experiencing used 15 weekly one-hour appointments. Those sessions were longer than BetterHelp’s standard appointments. Ask your therapist about session length before starting.

BetterHelp is entirely online and does not offer hands-on treatment or standard in-person appointments. Somatic Experiencing International does not state on its public pages whether the method requires touch or whether it can be provided remotely.

Users report that Somatic Experiencing can be provided through video and that remote sessions can be effective. Some people who tried trauma processing through BetterHelp said the greater challenge was getting enough attention and preparation from the therapist before the session.

Video is likely more suitable than phone or live chat because it allows the therapist to observe breathing, posture, and other physical responses.

Does somatic therapy work?

The evidence base is limited, and study results are mixed.

A 2017 randomized trial studied Somatic Experiencing for PTSD in 63 participants over 15 weekly sessions. Participants experienced large reductions in PTSD severity and depression, and 44% no longer met the criteria for PTSD after treatment. The authors noted the small sample and lack of an active comparison treatment.1

A 2021 scoping review evaluated 16 studies. It found preliminary evidence that Somatic Experiencing may improve emotional and physical symptoms, but concluded that stronger and less biased randomized research was needed.2

A 2020 randomized trial added Somatic Experiencing to physiotherapy for patients with low back pain and PTSD symptoms. It found no significant difference in pain-related disability between the groups. Improvements in PTSD symptoms did not reach the threshold for clinical importance.3

We found no randomized trial of Somatic Experiencing delivered through video. A 2022 meta-analysis comparing telehealth and in-person psychotherapy across several conditions found no clear difference between the formats. However, none of the 12 included trials studied a body-based therapy.4

BetterHelp’s somatic therapy page cites an uncontrolled study of tsunami survivors in which 90% reportedly improved. That percentage is BetterHelp’s claim and does not come from a randomized comparison.

The American Psychological Association’s dictionary uses “somatic therapy” to describe physical psychiatric treatments such as medication and electroconvulsive therapy. BetterHelp’s directory uses the more common consumer meaning: body-oriented psychotherapy. Choosing Therapy’s somatic therapy guide explains the techniques in more detail.

This article is for information only and is not medical advice. Talk to a doctor or licensed clinician before starting, stopping, or changing any treatment.

What do BetterHelp users report?

We did not find a user review specifically describing somatic therapy received through BetterHelp.

BetterHelp has a 3.9 out of 5 Trustpilot rating based on 9,661 reviews. Positive reviews often mention the ease of switching therapists. One August 2026 reviewer appreciated being able to change therapists without having an uncomfortable final session. Complaints frequently concern billing and slow support responses.

Users looking for a particular treatment method describe BetterHelp’s search and matching process as difficult. Some say niche specialties are not well represented. Others report trying several therapists before learning that none was qualified to address their situation. Some eventually found a somatic specialist through Psychology Today or Grow Therapy.

Matching is often described as trial and error. Users report receiving generic responses, encountering unresponsive therapists, or changing therapists several times before finding a good fit. Others say switching is fast and easy once they decide to use that option.

When might BetterHelp not be the right choice?

Do you want to choose a somatic therapist before paying?

Rula’s directory has a Treatment approach filter that includes Somatic. It shows providers before signup and may have appointments available as early as the next day.

Rula is in network with at least 120 insurance plans. Insured sessions cost about $15 on average, while self-pay therapy costs $150 per session. Search Rula’s therapists.

Grow Therapy also includes Somatic under its More filters menu. Insured sessions cost about $21 on average, while individual providers set self-pay prices. Grow’s own guide warns that some unlicensed practitioners market somatic services without clinical credentials. Look up your plan on Grow Therapy.

Do you want a subscription that identifies somatic therapy during signup?

Talkspace has a dedicated online somatic therapy page and lists Somatic Therapy among its approaches. Its questionnaire asks whether you want a therapist with expertise in a particular area.

Talkspace costs $69 to $109 per week. Most insured members have a $0 copay. Live sessions last 30 minutes. Check your Talkspace coverage.

Do you want a credentialed Somatic Experiencing Practitioner?

Somatic Experiencing International’s directory shows each listed practitioner’s level of training. BetterHelp does not provide that information through its filter.

Users note that practitioners pay to appear in the Somatic Experiencing International directory, so it may not include every qualified clinician.

Local somatic specialists generally charge $100 to $225 per session. Because there is no CPT code specifically for somatic therapy, many do not bill insurance.

Finding a local specialist may also take longer. In a 2023 American Psychological Association survey, 56% of psychologists had no openings for new patients. Among those maintaining waitlists, 69% reported an average wait of up to three months.5

BetterHelp matches most people within approximately 48 hours. Its weekly subscription includes one live session and messaging between sessions, and switching therapists is free. However, its somatic tag is not a verified credential, and the signup questionnaire does not let you request the approach.
