At a glance
  • Yes. Talkspace’s psychiatry network of licensed psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners prescribes mental health medications for adults 18 and up, no referral needed.
  • No controlled substances. Talkspace’s policy names Adderall, Vyvanse, Ritalin, Concerta, Xanax, Ativan, and Klonopin as examples of what it will not prescribe.
  • Getting a prescription starts with a live video evaluation ($299 cash, or an insured copay Talkspace puts at typically $30 or less), then follow-ups at least every 3 months for refills.

Talkspace is an online mental health platform. It runs therapy and psychiatry as separate services, and only the psychiatry side prescribes. That side is staffed by licensed telehealth psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners. They evaluate you over live video and, if they judge medication appropriate, send a prescription to your pharmacy. You can start a Talkspace psychiatry evaluation directly, or add psychiatry to an existing therapy account.

What Talkspace can and cannot prescribe

Talkspace prescribes

Talkspace does not prescribe

SSRIs: Lexapro, Zoloft, Prozac, Celexa

Stimulants: Adderall, Vyvanse, Ritalin, Concerta

SNRIs: Cymbalta

Benzodiazepines: Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin

Sleep and anxiety options: trazodone, Buspar, propranolol

Ketamine: Schedule III under federal law, so the no-controlled-substances policy excludes it

Mood stabilizers and atypical antipsychotics: Lamictal, Lithium, Seroquel, Abilify

Any other controlled substance; Talkspace notes its example list “is not exhaustive.”

Per Talkspace’s policy article: “For safety and legal reasons, Talkspace does not prescribe controlled substances.” No state exceptions were listed. Per Talkspace, medication “is not a guaranteed outcome of psychiatry sessions”; the provider decides after evaluating you. For anything not named in its examples, the policy article points readers to the DEA’s alphabetical list of controlled substances.

Can Talkspace therapists prescribe medication?

No. Talkspace’s therapist network includes psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, and counselors, and per its help center they work with you on a personalized plan from a therapeutic approach. If you need medication, Talkspace’s stated option is switching to psychiatry or signing up for psychiatry in addition to therapy. Many licensed providers recommend coupling evidenced-based therapy and medication management. The psychiatry network is the prescribing side: per the help center, it “includes psychiatrists and nurse practitioners who specialize in psychiatry, mental health, and medication management,” Medication is only available to those age 18 and older.

How prescribing works at Talkspace

No referral is needed, meaning you can get started on your own. To sign up, access Get Started on the homepage or app. You will begin by answering questions about what brings you in, creating your account, and booking an initial evaluation. The initial evaluation will consist of a live video session that typically runs 45 to 60 minutes, where the provider assesses your needs and history. Per Talkspace’s help center, “To receive a prescription through Talkspace, you’ll need to have an appointment with one of our psychiatric providers.” The psychiatry service covers 150+ conditions, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, OCD, insomnia, bipolar disorder, and others. For ADHD specifically, evaluation and non-stimulant options are in scope, while stimulants are not. If medication fits and it is not a controlled substance, the prescription goes to the pharmacy you chose at intake, either a local retail pharmacy or a mail-order option. Talkspace is integrated directly with Amazon Pharmacy as a mail-order option. However, Talkspace does not ship medication itself. Medication cost is separate from the session cost and will be dependent on your insurance, the drug, and your pharmacy. Pharmacy details cannot be viewed or edited in your Talkspace account, so a pharmacy change MUST go through your provider.

Talkspace policy requires a visit with your psychiatric provider at least every 3 months for a refill, with prescriptions typically written for up to three months at a time. Between sessions you can message your provider quick questions at no charge, and replies usually come by the next business day. Sessions can be booked as little as 12 hours ahead.

Can Talkspace prescribe Lexapro?

Yes. Lexapro (escitalopram) is an SSRI, appears by name on Talkspace’s prescribable-medications page, and has its own Talkspace prescription page. Per MedlinePlus, escitalopram treats depression and generalized anxiety disorder and works by increasing serotonin in the brain. It is not a controlled substance, so Talkspace’s policy allows it. You fill out an online assessment, then meet the provider on video. If they decide Lexapro is right for you, the prescription goes to your pharmacy, and refills run on the every-3-months follow-up schedule. The same applies to Zoloft, Prozac, and the other SSRIs and SNRIs on the list.

If you need Adderall, Xanax, or another controlled substance

Talkspace’s exclusion is its own policy, stricter than what federal rules currently allow. DEA telehealth flexibilities in effect through December 31, 2026 permit registered practitioners to prescribe Schedule II to V medications by video without a prior in-person exam. However, Talkspace opted out anyway. If seeking an unavailable medication, Talkspace advises to “consult a psychiatric provider outside the platform.”

Talkiatry staffs psychiatrists, all medical doctors, who can prescribe any medication they judge appropriate, controlled substances included, where state law allows telehealth prescribing; the evaluation and diagnosis come first, and Talkiatry warns that continuing a previous prescriber’s regimen is not guaranteed. Like Talkspace, It works through insurance, which fits if you were planning to use coverage anyway. The other route is an in-person psychiatrist through your insurance directory.

What Talkspace psychiatry costs

Cash prices, per Talkspace’s pricing article: $299 for the initial evaluation, $175 per follow-up, with bundles at $435 for the evaluation plus one follow-up and $725 with three; existing members can buy follow-up packs of three, six, or nine sessions ($475, $890, and $1,260). It is billed per session, with no subscription. With insurance, Talkspace psychiatry is in-network with most major insurers, including Cigna, Optum, and Aetna. Copays are typically $30 or less per its help center, averaging around $15 per its psychiatry page with some members paying as little as $0. The copay is charged after each session, then Talkspace submits the claim and bills your card for any remaining responsibility once your insurer processes it. If a non-controlled medication is what you need, book the evaluation with your insurance details ready. Our Talkspace cost guide covers Talkspace’s full pricing, therapy included.

What users report about Talkspace psychiatry

HelpGuide’s 2026 survey of more than 200 Talkspace users found 71 percent got their first psychiatry appointment within 3 days and 93 percent within 6. In the same survey, 85 percent rated the cost as good or very good value and 91 percent said they would recommend it. HelpGuide’s own tester was matched with a psychiatric nurse practitioner within about two hours, then waited over a week for an open appointment slot. The NP took a detailed history and ordered blood work before prescribing anything.

Trustpilot rates Talkspace 4.4 across 2,373 reviews, and billing surprises are the recurring negative theme there.1 BBB shows an A+ rating with 222 complaints in three years, including a 2026 dispute over a $126.80 charge billed as a psychiatric evaluation the member says never happened.2 Visible reviews say little about refills or prescriptions specifically, and our Talkspace review covers the wider experience.
