Talkiatry takes no Medicaid. It offers self-pay for patients whose insurance it does not accept, but not for Medicaid or Medicare. Talkiatry quoted us $399 for a first visit and $344 for follow-ups. It also matches you to a psychiatrist through its intake rather than letting you browse. Trustpilot reviewers add billing surprises to that list, with unexpected charges as the dominant one-star theme.1 Prices and insurance for every online psychiatry and therapy alternative below were checked August 29, 2026.

Brightside Health: self-pay and select Medicaid
Talkiatry offers self-pay only to patients whose insurance it does not accept, and not to anyone on Medicaid or Medicare. Brightside publishes flat self-pay rates: $95 a month for psychiatry, $299 for therapy, $349 for both, and a $45 maintenance tier once you are 90 days stable with your prescriber. It also takes many national plans plus select Medicare and Medicaid, covers ages 13 and up, and runs a structured suicide-prevention program that none of the other services here offer.Brightside prescribers do not prescribe controlled substances, so no Adderall and no Xanax; our Brightside Health reviewhas the full breakdown. If you are uninsured or on a Medicaid plan that Talkiatry will not take, start here. Check Brightside’s plans here.
Rula: choose your own provider
Rula is a directory you browse yourself: 23,000+ licensed providers across all 50 states, filterable by insurance, with some bookable for the next day. Patients with insurance typically pay about $15 a session, and Rula takes 100+ plans, including Medicaid and Medicare Advantage in many states. Self-pay exists too: $150 for individual therapy, $225 for a psychiatry intake, $175 for follow-ups.Talkiatry assigns your psychiatrist, and our review found first appointments often run over two weeks out; with Rula, you pick the provider and can book as soon as the next day. If your state is one of Talkiatry’s five gaps per our July 2026 review (Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, North Dakota, Wyoming), Rula operates there.
Grow Therapy: virtual or in person
Grow works like Rula, a browse-and-book directory for therapy and medication management, with one difference: many of its providers also see patients in an office. Sessions average $21 with insurance; it accepts 100+ plans, including Medicare, and Medicaid is accepted in some states. Self-pay pricing is set per provider and listed on each profile, so there is no single cash rate to quote. For comparison, Grow’s own cost guide puts US therapy without insurance at $100 to more than $200 a session. Browse Grow Therapy providers with your plan selected; the insurance filter qualifies them for you.
Talkspace: therapy first, meds available
Talkiatry is psychiatry-first; therapy is only available by referral from your Talkiatry psychiatrist. Talkspace starts with therapy: therapy subscriptions from $69 a week (messaging only) to $109 a week (video, messaging, and workshops), with psychiatry as an add-on at $299 for the initial evaluation and $175 per follow-up. Coverage is wide: plans covering more than 100 million people, including Cigna, Aetna, Optum, TRICARE, and Medicare. Talkspace says most insured members pay a $0 copay. Its psychiatric providers prescribe everything except controlled substances. Talkspace fits if weekly therapy is the main thing you want and your medication is an SSRI. If you need a psychiatrist leading your care, Talkspace is a weak match.
In-person psychiatry through your insurance directory
An in-person psychiatrist from your insurer’s directory offers what no telehealth service matches: real provider choice, a long-term local relationship, no state-line rules on prescribing, and the full scope for complex cases. Stimulants are the clearest example. Talkiatry cannot always prescribe them, since some states require an in-person visit first and an individual psychiatrist can decline; an in-person prescriber has neither problem. The costs are the reason people left that path: without insurance, initial evaluations run about $300 to $500,2 and one July 2026 review of published cash prices put physician intakes at an average of $496.3 With insurance, a directory search plus a few calls still beats any app if your case involves multiple diagnoses or a controlled-substance regimen.
Is Talkiatry still right for some people?
Yes. If your insurance is in Talkiatry’s network and your deductible position is known, most patients pay around $30 a visit for psychiatrist-led care, with first appointments typically within a week of the assessment. Verified in-network Reddit users report that exact copay experience. The billing complaints involve coverage that was never verified or claims miscoded to the wrong insurer: Reddit threads from early 2026 describe a $477 first-visit bill after insurance went unverified, months of miscoded claims to the wrong regional insurer, and a card-on-file policy that auto-charges statements under $200.4 One user also reported being declined treatment over cannabis use, a caution common across telepsychiatry. It also treats patients as young as 5, which is unusual for online practices. If you have strong in-network coverage and want a psychiatrist directing your care, check your plan with Talkiatry before paying more elsewhere; our Talkiatry review covers the full experience.
