At a glance
  • No. Talkspace does not accept Medicaid in any state, per its own help center and blog, with no exceptions or pilot programs.
  • Talkspace takes Medicare, which covers its therapy in all 50 states, so dual-eligible members (Medicare plus Medicaid) can use Talkspace through the Medicare side.
  • Medicaid members can get covered online care elsewhere: Brightside Health takes select Medicaid plans for therapy and psychiatry (most members pay $0), and Grow Therapy and Rula accept Medicaid in parts of the country. Coverage is dependent on the state of residence.

Talkspace is an online therapy and psychiatry platform covered by most major commercial insurance plans, employer benefits, and EAPs. Medicaid is not covered. Talkspace’s help center says: “Talkspace currently doesn’t accept Medicaid or support international health insurance plans.” Its own Medicaid guide, updated September 2025, repeats it: “Medicaid doesn’t currently cover Talkspace online therapy.” Medicaid is the single largest payer for mental health services in the United States, covering care for roughly 76 million people through providers outside of Talkspace.

Online Therapy Covered by Insurance

What Talkspace says about Medicaid

Talkspace does not accept Medicaid in any state. No exceptions are listed, and its named-insurer pages (Cigna, Aetna, Optum, Anthem, BCBS, TRICARE, Medicare) do not list Medicaid.

Coverage type Does it cover Talkspace? What you pay (avg, per Talkspace)
Medicaid (any state) No Self-pay only
Medi-Cal (California Medicaid) No Self-pay only
BCBS or Anthem Medicaid managed care No; the Medicaid exclusion governs Self-pay only
Medicare (Original and Advantage) Therapy yes, psychiatry not yet Coinsurance may apply
Commercial BCBS plans Many plans, therapy and psychiatry $10 average copay, as low as $0
Commercial Anthem plans Yes, therapy and psychiatry $15 average copay

As of August 31, 2026, from Talkspace’s coverage pages.

Two card types are still excluded:

  • A BCBS-branded Medicaid card does not make Talkspace covered. Many state Blue plans administer Medicaid managed care, and Talkspace’s BCBS and Anthem pages cover commercial plans only. The Medicaid exclusion still applies.
  • Medi-Cal is Medicaid, so California’s program is excluded the same way.

If you run a Medicaid plan through Talkspace’s eligibility checker, it will not return coverage. To find providers that accept Medicaid coverage, check your state Medicaid portal or the member-services number on your card.

Does Blue Cross Blue Shield cover Talkspace?

Many Blue Cross Blue Shield plans cover Talkspace therapy and psychiatry, with a $10 average BCBS member copay that can run as low as $0, and coverage varying plan by plan. BCBS is a federation of independent state licensees, so the answer is specific to your plan. Anthem, the largest BCBS licensee, has its own Talkspace page: therapy and psychiatry accepted, including teen therapy for 13 to 17 and couples therapy, at a $15 average Anthem member copay.

A BCBS- or Anthem-branded Medicaid card stays excluded.

How to check your coverage

  1. Medicaid readers: skip Talkspace’s checker, which will not return Medicaid coverage, and go straight to your state Medicaid portal or the member-services number on your card.
  2. Commercial BCBS, Anthem, or Medicare readers: run your plan through Talkspace’s eligibility check with your Member ID; it confirms eligibility and cost share in minutes.
  3. Dual-eligible readers: check the Medicare side with the same eligibility tool, or call the number on your Medicare card.

Medicare coverage and dual-eligible members

Medicare is a separate federal program which is accepted by Talkspace. Virtual therapy is covered by Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans in all 50 states and DC. Original Medicare typically covers up to 20 online therapy sessions a year, many Medicare Advantage plans cover two sessions a month, and members may owe coinsurance, with supplemental insurance potentially covering the rest. Psychiatry is excluded for now: Talkspace accepts Medicare “only for online therapy,” with medication services planned later.

If you hold both Medicare and Medicaid, you can use Talkspace for therapy through the Medicare side. Medicare pays; Medicaid pays nothing toward it. Check your Medicare coverage with Talkspace if that is your situation.

Where Medicaid members can get covered online therapy

Three services accept Medicaid, each with its own limits:

Brightside Health is the strongest fit for most Medicaid readers, because it is the only one of the three covering Medicaid psychiatry as well as therapy. Its Medicaid page is titled “Online therapy and psychiatry, covered by Medicaid” and says most patients pay $0 a session using Medicaid insurance, with appointments in as little as 24 hours. It expanded Medicaid and Medicare access in 2024 through Centene partnerships across states including TX, CA, NY, FL, and IL; per that announcement, Medicaid members get psychiatry, therapy, and its Crisis Care program.1 If medication might be part of your care, start with Brightside’s coverage check.

Grow Therapy accepts Medicaid in some states through individual therapists. Sessions average $21 with insurance. Per Grow’s own Medicaid page, you use the provider directory, pick your state, then select Medicaid or your specific plan to see which therapists accept it; in Florida, for example, Grow’s pages name Humana Dual Medicaid and UnitedHealthcare/Optum Medicaid. Filter Grow Therapy’s directory by your state and plan.

Rula is in-network with 120+ plans and accepts Medicaid in many states, with patients typically paying $15 a session and coverage expanding; verify your state and plan with Rula before counting on it.

All three depend on your state and plan. Check Brightside first if you need psychiatry or $0 sessions. Grow lets you pick your own therapist.

Using Medicaid the traditional way

Your Medicaid card also works through your state plan’s provider directory, and it is the cheapest option: covered mental health visits are typically $0, with states that charge copays keeping them around $2 to $4. A 2024 JAMA secret-shopper study found fewer than 18 percent of clinicians listed as in-network for Medicaid answered, accepted Medicaid, and could offer a new-patient appointment, with waits up to six months for successful bookings.2 Psychiatrists accept new Medicaid patients at 35.7 percent, half the rate of physicians overall.3

Community mental health centers take walk-ins in many counties, and a local provider can treat you for years. If you have the patience for the calls, it is the cheapest care available. The options above avoid those calls.

If you want Talkspace anyway

Without coverage, Talkspace is self-pay: $69 a week for messaging-only therapy, $99 with live video sessions, $109 with workshops, and $299 for a psychiatry evaluation with $175 follow-ups. Teen therapy runs $69 to $99 a week and couples therapy $109 a week for the couple, on the same self-pay basis. Per its help center, Talkspace offers no payment plans or financial assistance, so the weekly price is what you pay. Superbills exist for out-of-pocket members, but they serve commercial out-of-network claims; they will not produce Medicaid reimbursement. For most Medicaid budgets, the partners above or the directory path make more sense than $69-a-week therapy, and our Talkspace cost guide has the full self-pay math if you want it.

Talkspace rates 4.4 on Trustpilot across 2,373 reviews. Reviewers praise the therapists and complain about billing. Its BBB rating is A+, and the complaints there are about billing and therapists leaving. Our Talkspace review covers the experience past the coverage question.
