At a glance
  • No. BetterHelp does not accept Medicaid, and that includes Medi-Cal.
  • Grow Therapy and Rula do accept Medicaid in many states, with sessions averaging $0 to $21 with coverage.
  • Self-pay at BetterHelp runs $70 to $100 per week, with financial aid of 10% to 40% for those who qualify.

BetterHelp is an online therapy platform that matches you with a licensed therapist for video sessions and messaging. Medicaid is the government health program for people with limited income, and it normally covers outpatient mental health care. The two do not connect: BetterHelp sits outside every state’s Medicaid network, so a Medicaid card changes nothing at its checkout. Online therapy with Medicaid does exist, though. Two platforms carry it in many states, and they are where your card belongs.

As of August 25, 2026, per betterhelp.com/insurance.

BetterHelp says it is working with select carriers to expand its network, so the Medicaid “no” could change. For now, the dedicated Medicaid page on BetterHelp’s site points readers to their state Medicaid website or a primary care referral instead.

Online therapy that does take Medicaid

Two of the platforms we track accept Medicaid directly, and both run a coverage check during signup so you know before you commit:

  • Grow Therapy works with 125+ insurance plans including Medicaid, handles all billing and claims, and offers therapy and medication management with providers across all 50 states plus DC. Average cost with insurance is $21 per session, and some clients pay $0. Medicaid availability varies by state, so run its coverage check with your plan details.
  • Rula accepts Medicaid in many states, along with Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and 100+ commercial plans, for both therapy and psychiatry. Patients with insurance typically pay $15 per session, and Rula says coverage is expanding regularly.

If neither covers your state yet, your plan’s own provider directory is the fallback, and the section below on the traditional route explains what to expect from that search.

Does Medicare cover BetterHelp?

No. BetterHelp’s providers do not bill Medicare, so Medicare does not cover BetterHelp sessions, whether you have Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan. Medicare Part B does cover outpatient mental health care, including telehealth with approved providers, so the benefit itself is there for you to use elsewhere.

Medicare holders who want covered online care have in-network options. Talkiatry accepts Original Medicare (Part B) and select Medicare Advantage plans, varying by state, and verifies your network status before your first visit. Rula also accepts Medicare and Medicare Advantage in many states. Both offer psychiatry, and Talkiatry is psychiatry-led with therapists available.

Does insurance cover BetterHelp therapy at all?

Commercial insurance can, as of the rollout that began in 2025. BetterHelp is in-network with 125+ health insurance plans, and eligible members pay an average copay of $23 per session. Insurance coverage reached all 50 states plus Washington DC as of mid-2026, with provider capacity still limited, so availability depends on your specific plan, provider availability, and your deductible status.

Insurance-based membership covers one live session per week, and messaging between sessions stays subscription-only. A deductible may also apply before the copay kicks in. Our guide to the BetterHelp FAQ covers how the subscription works in detail.

Does BetterHelp accept Aetna?

Yes, for select commercial Aetna plans. BetterHelp’s insurance page says many of its providers accept Aetna, with availability varying by plan and location.

One caution for Medicaid readers: Aetna also administers managed Medicaid plans in some states under the Aetna Better Health name. BetterHelp’s Medicaid “no” governs there; nothing on its site says managed Medicaid plans from Aetna or any other carrier are included. If your Aetna card is a Medicaid plan, plan on the alternatives above.

Does BetterHelp take HSA or FSA cards?

Yes. BetterHelp accepts HSA and FSA cards and says it is recognized as an eligible medical expense by most providers. Your HSA or FSA administrator makes the final call on eligibility, so confirm with them, and keep receipts in case documentation is requested. HSA and FSA funds are mainly relevant to readers with employer coverage.

What BetterHelp costs if you self-pay

Without insurance, BetterHelp runs $70 to $100 per week, which works out to $280 to $400 per 4-week cycle. The price varies by location and therapist availability.

Financial aid makes the biggest difference to that price. BetterHelp offers it based on income, employment, veteran, and student status, and reporting puts the reduction at 10% to 40% off the monthly cost, with decisions arriving quickly after you apply inside the signup flow. Our BetterHelp financial aid guide covers the application step by step, and our BetterHelp discount code guide covers the current first-month offer.

BetterHelp does not provide superbills; members can download invoices from their account settings. Medicaid programs generally do not reimburse out-of-network care anyway, so treat the self-pay price as the full price.

If self-pay at that level fits your budget, check BetterHelp’s current price for your area through the signup flow.

How to check what your plan covers

  1. If you hold a commercial plan, start BetterHelp signup and enter your insurance details when prompted; it tells you whether your plan is accepted before you pay.
  2. If you hold Medicaid, run Grow Therapy’s or Rula’s coverage check with your member ID; both confirm your plan and state before booking.
  3. If you hold Medicare, check Talkiatry’s eligibility form; it verifies your network status before your first visit.
  4. For any plan, the member services number on your card can confirm your telehealth mental health benefit directly.

The Medicaid directory route, and why online in-network platforms exist

Your Medicaid plan’s provider directory is the traditional path, and it has advantages of its own: you can be seen in person, stay with one local provider for years, and under most state Medicaid plans pay little or nothing out of pocket per visit. The search is the hard part. A 2024 JAMA secret-shopper study of Medicaid managed care directories in four major cities found that only 18% of listed psychiatric clinicians were reachable1, accepted Medicaid, and offered a new-patient appointment; where appointments existed, median waits ran 28 days in New York City and 64 in Los Angeles. A 2026 Health Affairs study found over 40% of Medicaid-enrolled psychiatrists were “ghost providers”2 who saw no Medicaid patients at all.

Grow Therapy and Rula sit inside those same Medicaid networks and run the eligibility check during signup, which is the exact step the directory studies show failing. The directory still makes sense when you want in-person care, or when a specific local provider comes recommended and takes your plan. When weeks of calls have produced no appointment, the platforms let you use the same Medicaid card with the network check done before you book.

How Medicaid holders handle it, in their own words

The pattern in Reddit threads mirrors the coverage table. A Medicaid member in April 2026 put it plainly: “I was looking at BetterHelp but it doesn’t cover Medicaid which I am on atm.” A New York member on a managed Medicaid plan (Excellus) who needed virtual-only care reported calling every provider in their directory without success and finding no telehealth platform that accepted the plan, the ghost-network experience the studies above measure in aggregate. And a member who met a therapist on BetterHelp in 2022 described paying out of pocket to keep seeing her off-platform, then being quoted 2 to 6 weeks for a new match through the Medicaid system when that relationship ended.

Two takeaways from those accounts: managed-Medicaid coverage varies plan by plan even at platforms that accept Medicaid, so run the eligibility checks with your exact plan name, and budget lead time if the directory route becomes your fallback.

What does Medicaid cover for therapy instead?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

State Medicaid programs cover outpatient mental health care, with telehealth benefits varying by state. Grow Therapy and Rula deliver that coverage online in many states, or your plan’s directory and member services line can point you to in-network providers near you.

Will BetterHelp take Medicaid in the future?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

BetterHelp says it is working with select insurance carriers to expand its network, but as of August 2026 it names no timeline. Check its insurance page for the current state of BetterHelp Medicaid coverage before assuming anything has changed.
