At a glance
  • Self-pay costs $95 a month for psychiatry and $299 for therapy (four video sessions plus unlimited messaging), or $349 for both. These fees are billed monthly, and you can cancel anytime.
  • With insurance, copays are per-appointment,  averaging $25 by Brightside’s count. Care is covered in full for Cigna members and some Medicare and Medicaid plans are also accepted.
  • Medication is a separate cost at $15 per fill by mail order, or your pharmacy’s price locally.

Brightside Health is online psychiatry and therapy for anxiety, depression, and related conditions, for ages 13 and up in all 50 states. It sells care two ways, self-pay or insurance. Self-pay is a flat monthly subscription with the prices above. Insurance replaces the subscription with per-visit cost sharing as copays, coinsurance, and your deductible. Brightside’s messaging, progress tracking, and self-guided lessons stay free with insurance. The billing complaints in Brightside Health reviews from 2025 and 2026 come almost entirely from the insurance side, so verify your copay with your insurer before your first visit.

Brightside pricing without insurance

Plan Price What you get
Psychiatry $95/month Psychiatric evaluation, medication management, anytime provider messaging
Therapy $299/month Four video sessions a month, unlimited therapist messaging, self-guided lessons
Psychiatry + Therapy $349/month Everything above, $45 less than buying both separately
Extra therapy session $59 each 55-minute video session
Teen Care (13-17) Same prices Therapy $299, therapy + psychiatry $349

Prices verified against Brightside’s own FAQ, July 2026 capture, checked August 29, 2026. There is no signup or intake fee; the assessment that starts everything is free, and subscriptions bill monthly on the same date.

The per-session math: $299 for four sessions works out to about $75 per 55-minute session with the messaging included. The national private-practice average per session is about $143 without insurance.1 The first psychiatry visit is typically 30 minutes, with follow-ups every few months or more often when treatment changes.

Brightside also offers a lower-cost maintenance option, reported at $45 per month once you are 90 days established with your prescriber, with visits billed at $50 each.  This option appears inside the member portal rather than on the public pricing page, per our Brightside Health review.

Check your own price through Brightside’s free assessment; self-pay tiers and insurance eligibility both appear there.

Brightside cost with insurance

Brightside is in-network with Cigna, Aetna, Ambetter, UnitedHealthcare, and Blue Cross Blue Shield plus “some Medicare and Medicaid plans”, covering more than 150 million lives by its count. Coverage varies by state, and the signup flow checks your plan. What you pay is your plan’s cost sharing, and Brightside advertises a $25 average copay per session. Cigna is the standout: “all of your care will be covered,” in Brightside’s words. Other carriers’ members “may be responsible for a small member fee.”

Whether insurance costs less than self-pay depends on your plan:

  1. Your deductible. Until this is met, your insurance may pay nothing and visits are billed at negotiated rates. One Trustpilot reviewer’s insurance-billed visit ran $265 for 30 minutes.2 Brightside explains “If your deductible is $1000, you may need to pay $1000 before your insurance starts paying.”
  2. The estimate is not a guarantee. Brightside clarifies at signup, “we’ll provide details about any cost share responsibilities that we’re able to look up on your behalf. We also recommend that you contact your health insurance plan to verify that your care at Brightside will be covered.” One Reddit user was quoted $35 a session, attended weekly, and was back-billed $315 when the real copay turned out to be $70.50 per session.

Be aware that bills can arrive after a cancellation for visits already used. It takes time for Brightside to submit the claim, wait for your insurer’s explanation of benefits, and then finally charge the card on file. Self-pay members skip all of this, paying a flat fee with the ability to cancel anytime.

Extra costs and fees

  • Medication. Not included in the price of any plan. You can expect to pay $15 per fill if using Brightside’s mail order pharmacy, or your insurance copay at a local pharmacy. For uninsured medication pickup, Brightside suggests GoodRx-style coupons. Its prescribers write no controlled substances, and the common generics keep fills cheap.
  • Missed appointments. Rescheduling needs more than 24 hours’ notice. A no-show “may result in a no-show fee of up to $200,” which is more than two months of the psychiatry plan.
  • Refunds. Psychiatry payments are non-refundable once your first scheduled consultation time passes, and “all therapy subscription payments are non-refundable.” Canceling the medication plan also stops refills, because your provider can no longer track treatment.
  • Canceling. Self-serve in the Brightside portal. Go to settings, then Manage Plan, then cancel the medication or therapy plan. Timing matters, because insurance-billed visits already used can still generate invoices after you cancel.
  • Specialty programs. The Suicide Prevention Program is insurance-only, with no self-pay price and a reported 4-to-12-week course per our review. The Intensive Outpatient Programs run in select states with cost quoted after insurance verification.

Ways to pay less

HSA and FSA cards work for treatment, copays, and prescriptions. If Brightside is out-of-network for your plan, you can request an itemized cost list to submit for possible reimbursement. There is no financial aid or sliding scale but first-month discounts for new members appear from time to time. Check your plan and price through Brightside’s signup, which starts with the free assessment.

Is Brightside worth the price?

For therapy, an effective $75 per session undercuts the roughly $143 in-person average, and extra sessions at $59 run cheaper still.1 For psychiatry, the $95 per month beats any single in-person cash visit ($100 to $300 for medication-management follow-ups by published ranges).3 However, $1,140 per year costs more than quarterly self-pay follow-ups at Talkspace ($299 evaluation plus $175 per follow-up, about $824 in year one), though without Brightside’s anytime messaging and monitoring. If you have in-network insurance and mainly need medication, Talkiatry says most patients pay $30 or less per visit, but it takes no cash patients at all.

In-person care will always have its advantages like a local long-term relationship, and full prescribing scope including the controlled substances that Brightside excludes by policy.

Trustpilot has Brightside at 4.0 of 5 across 1,493 reviews, with 65 percent five-star. Reviewers praise the providers and the speed of care, and the negative reviews focus on insurance billing.2 BBB complaints run on the same themes, bills arriving after cancellation among them. On Reddit, a parent who signed a teen up for combined care waited two weeks for a psychiatric provider. When they tried to cancel that portion, they were charged a full month of psychiatric services anyway. They called the service “not a scam” and said the therapy “may help some people”.4 Another member two months into prescribed medication was told Brightside could no longer treat them and was given a 90-day supply. One Reddit member using insurance for medication management “paid zero out of pocket.”9 Brightside fits anxiety and depression care well. Brightside itself excludes crises like active psychosis and high-risk self-harm. Read our comparison of Brightside and BetterHelp, which covers the therapy-only decision.
