At a glance
  • BetterHelp is not free for students, and there is no general student rate.
  • What works: a parent’s insurance ($23 average copay), financial aid (10% to 40%, renewable), Student Beans (30% off three months), our link’s 20% off the first month, and a free first month for Phi Theta Kappa members.
  • Campus counseling centers are free at 96.8% of surveyed schools: a real first stop.

BetterHelp is an online therapy subscription: a matched licensed therapist, weekly video sessions, and messaging in between, at $70 to $100 a week. Students get no automatic price break. But student status unlocks more than BetterHelp’s own site mentions: the financial aid application weighs it, a verification service discounts it, and one honor society partnership goes as far as a free month. Set those against the free counseling center nearly every campus already runs, and there is a sensible order to try them in.

BetterHelp advertises no student discount on any page we checked; the offers above live with partners (Student Beans, PTK), inside the financial aid program, or through insurance.

How to get the best price as a student

  1. Check your parent’s insurance first; most people under 26 can stay on a parent’s plan. Start BetterHelp signup and enter the insurance details; if the plan qualifies, a $23 average copay (about $92 a month of weekly sessions) beats every discount below.
  2. For long-term self-pay, apply for financial aid. The eligibility form opens at the final stage of intake when you indicate therapy is unaffordable, and approved reductions of 10% to 40% renew every 3 months.
  3. For the deepest upfront cut without an aid application, verify through Student Beans for 30% off three months.
  4. For the no-paperwork path, use our link: 20% off the first month, applied automatically, no student verification.

Pick one path; nothing published says these offers stack, so assume one per account.

Is BetterHelp free for students?

No. There is no free BetterHelp for students generally, and they recommend financial-hardship cases to contact@betterhelp.com, where BetterHelp works with each person on an affordable price.

The exceptions are narrow. Phi Theta Kappa members get the first month free plus 15% off thereafter, verified by membership code or PTK email, with a payment method on file and no charge if you cancel within the month. If a parent’s employer offers an EAP, BetterHelp sells access through employer programs, so sessions might be covered from home. Your parent’s benefits portal or HR can confirm.

The free option is the one your tuition and fees already fund. Per the AUCCCD annual survey, 96.8% of college counseling centers charge students nothing for sessions. Only 38.2% cap talk-therapy sessions at all, and where caps exist they average 11 sessions. For a first stop, or for anyone whose budget answer is $0, start at the campus center.

When BetterHelp makes sense over the campus center

Students pick BetterHelp for reasons the counseling center cannot always cover, like continuing with the same therapist over summer or a semester abroad, privacy from a small campus community, scheduling around jobs and classes, or wanting more than a session-limited service. Research from the Center for Collegiate Mental Health, which draws on 209 colleges and over 160,000 students seeking treatment, found financially insecure students carried higher psychological distress while working more hours, which is exactly the group financial aid and the discounts above exist for.

If that is your situation, run the price levers in order: insurance first, financial aid second, Student Beans third, the 20% link as the no-paperwork fallback. Our financial aid guide covers the application in detail.

Younger students: BetterHelp routes minors to Teen Counseling

BetterHelp serves adults; its FAQ directs minors away from the platform. Teen Counseling, which is part of BetterHelp, covers ages 13 to 19 with licensed therapists by text, phone, and video, using separate parent and teen signup paths. A teen who starts alone is guided to get consent from a parent or legal guardian, and each side gets its own session environment. Pricing is shown at signup and varies by region.

Student discounts outside the US

The Student Beans offer runs at the same 30% off three months in the US, UK, and Australia listings. BetterHelp prices by location, per its own pricing page: $70 to $100 weekly in the US, 45 to 70 GBP in the UK, 50 to 70 EUR in much of Europe, 85 to 110 CAD in Canada, and 90 to 120 AUD in Australia. International students studying in the US see US pricing.

Student codes that don’t work

Coupon aggregators advertise a “50% student discount” for BetterHelp. That figure appears on no BetterHelp-owned page and no Student Beans listing. The real, verifiable student offer is 30%. The pattern from our BetterHelp discount code guide holds here. BetterHelp runs offers through partner links and verified programs, and any site promising a bigger student percentage than 30% is listing junk.

What students report paying

In pricing threads, the aid quotes are real but modest at the low end. A UK student reported paying 36 GBP a week with the student and financial-aid reduction combined; a 2025 US signup saw $65 a week drop to $58.50 with financial assistance, a 10% cut; and a 2024 user landed about $48 a week after a discounted rate plus aid. Treat 10% as the common floor and the 40% ceiling as the exception.

One background worry from those threads has a clean answer: commenters confirm financial aid comes out of BetterHelp’s side of the ledger and does not reduce what your therapist is paid. And no thread in our review describes the Student Beans route in actual use, so the aid questionnaire remains the well-trodden path.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The near-exceptions: Phi Theta Kappa members get the first month free, some students get it free through a parent’s employer EAP, and financial aid can cut up to 40%. The reliably free option is your campus counseling center, which charges nothing at most schools.

What is the BetterHelp student discount?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

BetterHelp itself publishes no student discount. Through Student Beans, verified students get 30% off three months, and students use financial aid (10% to 40% off) or the 20% first-month offer through our link.

Does BetterHelp financial aid cover students?

Financial aid is based on income and employment status per BetterHelp, and our reporting finds the application also asks about student status. Qualifying users get 10% to 40% off, renewable every 3 months, which usually beats any one-time discount over a semester.

Can students use insurance for BetterHelp?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Yes, where the plan qualifies. Students on a parent’s commercial plan (possible until age 26) can enter it during signup. BetterHelp is in-network with 125+ plans, and eligible members average a $23 copay per session. Medicaid is the exception; BetterHelp does not accept it.

Can I use BetterHelp if I’m under 18?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

BetterHelp is for adults. Teen Counseling, part of BetterHelp, serves ages 13 to 19 with parental consent built into its signup.

Can I stack the student discount with financial aid or the 20% code?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Nothing published addresses stacking, so plan on choosing one. For most students the ranking is insurance, then financial aid, then Student Beans, then the first-month code through our link, which applies automatically the moment you sign up.
