At a glance
  • Best for medication: Talkiatry.
  • Best for insurance including Medicaid: Grow Therapy or Rula.
  • Best like-for-like subscription with coverage: Talkspace.
  • Best cash price: Open Path, $40 to $70 per session.
  • BetterHelp itself now takes 125+ insurance plans, which fixes the most common old reason to leave.

BetterHelp is a big name in online therapy and for many people, it works. It features a matched therapist, weekly video sessions, and messaging in between. Even so, there are some conditions to consider. Its therapists are generalists rather than specialists, its medication options are limited, it takes no government insurance, and you pay for the subscription even in weeks when you have no session. Each of those gaps has a platform built to fill it, and the right alternative depends on which one matters to you.

Talkiatry: for medication and psychiatry

BetterHelp’s therapy subscription does not include medication management, and its psychiatry add-on excludes controlled substances. Talkiatry is built the other way around, with psychiatrist-led care, in-network billing, and therapists available for combined treatment. Its psychiatrists are MDs who can prescribe the medications they judge appropriate after evaluation, including controlled substances where state law allows telehealth prescribing.

Talkiatry accepts major commercial plans (Optum, BCBS, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare) plus Original Medicare and select Medicare Advantage plans, and it verifies your network status before your first visit, covering the cost of that visit if it gets your coverage wrong. Talkiatry does not take Medicaid, so check that your plan is in network before you book.

Grow Therapy: for insurance, Medicaid included, without a subscription

Grow Therapy works with 125+ insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare in participating states, and handles billing and claims for you. You pay per session instead of per week, with the average cost with insurance being $21 per session, and some clients pay $0. Providers cover all 50 states plus DC for therapy and medication management, and some areas offer in-person appointments.

For the two biggest BetterHelp complaints, subscription billing and coverage, this is the cleanest exit. Sessions bill when they happen through coverage BetterHelp cannot take (BetterHelp accepts no Medicaid, Medicare or TRICARE). Self-pay rates vary by provider, so cash payers should compare quotes.

Rula: for the widest payer coverage

Rula accepts 100+ commercial plans, among them Aetna, Anthem, most Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans, Cigna, Kaiser by referral, Optum, Oscar, and UnitedHealthcare, plus Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Medicaid in many states. Patients with insurance typically pay $15 per session for therapy or psychiatry, across all 50 states.

If your plan was the reason BetterHelp’s insurance option came up short, Rula is the broadest single check to run. Its weakness is its cash pricing: $150 per individual therapy session and $225 for a psychiatry intake self-pay, so uninsured readers should look at Open Path or Brightside first.

Talkspace: the closest swap, with insurance attached

Talkspace is the service most like BetterHelp. It has subscription tiers ($69 per week messaging-only, $99 with video, $109 with workshops), unlimited messaging, and an app-first experience. The difference is coverage. Talkspace is in-network with most major plans, TRICARE included, and says most insured members pay a $0 copay, with a $15 average. Psychiatry is available with $15 average copays for insured members.

Universal Health Services completed its acquisition of Talkspace on August 17, 2026, so plans and pricing may shift. Verified as of August 25, 2026.

Brightside Health: cash-pay psychiatry at a fixed price

Brightside treats depression and anxiety with therapy and medication from psychiatrists, physicians, and psychiatric nurse practitioners. Self-pay runs $95 per month for psychiatry, $299 for therapy, $349 for both, and it accepts commercial insurance plus some Medicare and Medicaid plans. In Arizona, Oregon, and Washington, its providers may prescribe certain controlled medications when clinically appropriate; everywhere else, non-controlled only.

The $95 psychiatry plan is the cheapest structured medication care in this lineup for cash payers. The therapy-side math is less favorable: $299 per month sits inside BetterHelp’s $280 to $400 range, so the reasons to switch are the psychiatry and the coverage, with therapy price a wash.

NOCD: for OCD, where general talk therapy underdelivers

OCD responds to exposure and response prevention (ERP), a specific protocol most generalist platforms do not guarantee. NOCD does only this: live video ERP sessions with OCD-specialty therapists and 24/7 in-app support between sessions. NOCD reports significant results for 74% of members in what it calls the largest peer-reviewed OCD treatment study, and it accepts major insurance plans in all 50 states.

On BetterHelp you are matched by availability, and ERP specialization is luck. If OCD is your diagnosis, the specialist platform is the right call. Cash pricing is quoted on a free 15-minute call rather than published.

Open Path Collective: therapy from $40 without insurance

Open Path is a nonprofit directory, and we earn nothing recommending it. Members pay a one-time $65 fee for lifetime access, then book directly with vetted therapists at $40 to $70 per individual session ($30 with student interns where available), online or in person, across the US and Canada. It exists for people without insurance, or with inadequate mental health benefits, who cannot afford the $80 to $200 market rate.

There is no platform layer: you find your therapist in the directory, arrange sessions directly, and pay the therapist per session, without insurance billing. For readers leaving BetterHelp purely over money, this is the lowest sustainable price for weekly therapy with a licensed professional.

Is BetterHelp still right for some people?

Yes, and it has fixed part of what people historically left over. BetterHelp now takes insurance (125+ plans, $23 average copay, live in all 50 states plus DC as of mid-2026, though provider capacity is still limited) and offers psychiatry through UpLift for non-controlled medications. For cash-pay talk therapy with unlimited messaging, its $70 to $100 per week, 20% off the first month through our link, remains competitive with Talkspace’s comparable $99 video tier, and financial aid of 10% to 40% is available for those who qualify. Most members are matched within about 24 hours, by BetterHelp’s own numbers.

The pattern in its Trustpilot profile (3.9 from 9,650 reviews, 80% five-star, 11% one-star)1 is that most users are satisfied while a consistent minority hits billing surprises or bad matches. Our BetterHelp review and BetterHelp controversy timeline cover both sides in depth, including the FTC settlement, which required a $7.8 million payment and banned sharing health data for advertising2.

What switchers say

The leave-reasons above are visible in recent threads. An August 2026 poster counted “close to 8 different therapists through BetterHelp,” with one good fit across several years. Others describe rematching twice in their first weeks, or waking up to emails that sessions were canceled because their therapist left the platform, with no way to follow them. Commenters point to Psychology Today, Headway, Alma, and Grow Therapy as places a departed therapist may resurface.

The same threads carry the counterweights. “It often takes a few tries to find the right therapist” is a common reframe, and the alternatives have catches of their own. One user skips insurance-billed platforms like Rula because a high-deductible plan means paying the full negotiated rate per session, and another was turned away by Open Path for earning above its income cutoff (the user cited $100k). The pattern across threads is that your luck with getting the right match varies everywhere, while the pricing structure is the part you get to pick deliberately.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best BetterHelp alternative overall?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

There is no single winner among BetterHelp’s competitors. The lineup splits by need: Talkiatry for medication with insurance, Grow Therapy or Rula for coverage including Medicaid, Talkspace for a like-for-like subscription with insurance, Brightside for cash-pay psychiatry, NOCD for OCD, and Open Path for the lowest cash price.

What online therapy is cheaper than BetterHelp?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

For cash payers, Open Path Collective at $40 to $70 per session beats BetterHelp’s $280 to $400 per month for weekly therapy. With insurance, Grow Therapy ($21 average per session), Rula ($15 typical), and Talkspace ($0 to $25 copays) all usually come in under BetterHelp’s self-pay price.

Which BetterHelp alternatives take insurance?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

All of them except Open Path: Talkiatry (bills insurance), Grow Therapy (including Medicaid and Medicare in participating states), Rula (including Medicare and Medicaid in many states), Talkspace (most major plans plus TRICARE), Brightside (commercial plus some Medicare and Medicaid), and NOCD (major plans in all 50 states). BetterHelp itself now accepts 125+ commercial plans but no government plans.

How do Grow Therapy, BetterHelp, and Talkspace compare?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Grow Therapy bills per session through insurance (average $21, Medicaid included in some states). BetterHelp and Talkspace are both subscriptions: BetterHelp runs $70 to $100 per week cash with insurance live in all 50 states plus DC, Talkspace $69 to $109 per week cash but in-network with most major plans and a $0 copay for most insured members. For anxiety and routine talk therapy, the deciding factor is usually which one your plan covers.

Are there companies like BetterHelp for medication?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Yes. Talkiatry (insurance-based, psychiatrist-led, controlled substances possible where state law allows), Brightside ($95 per month self-pay psychiatry), and Rula ($225 self-pay psychiatry intake or insurance copays) all prescribe. BetterHelp’s own UpLift psychiatry add-on covers non-controlled medications only.

Do these alternatives work outside the US?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Mostly no. The insurance-based platforms are built around US insurance plans and state licensure. Open Path lists therapists in the US and Canada. Readers elsewhere should check each service’s site directly for availability in their country.

Is switching from BetterHelp hard?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Switching platforms means a new intake and matching process at the new service, plus canceling your BetterHelp subscription. If cost is the only issue, applying for BetterHelp’s financial aid (10% to 40% off for qualifying users) is less disruptive than starting over; our financial aid guide explains how.
