LifeStance offers in-person and online mental health services, treating adults, kids, teens, couples, and families in 33 US states. Based on our in-depth scoring criteria, I gave it 3.5 stars out of 5. While I was impressed by the breadth of services and modalities available, including CBT and DBT therapy, as well as medication management, I struggled to find details on pricing. After speaking with customer service, I learned that cash-pay rates can be quite unpredictable (and high) depending on where you live.

Preview LifeStance Health
With over 7,000 providers, LifeStance offers online, in-person, and hybrid appointments for individuals, families, and couples across 33 states. Costs vary by location and provider, and while LifeStance accepts 300+ commercial insurance plans, cash-pay rates are not listed online. To determine out-of-pocket costs, users need to contact customer service or reach out directly to a provider.
I recommend LifeStance Health if you’re referred by your primary care provider or if it is in-network with your insurance. However, for those paying out-of-pocket, LifeStance’s rates for fully licensed therapists and psychiatric providers can be high, or at the very least, hard to predict.
As an alternative, Brightside Health offers some of the most affordable cash-pay rates for online psychiatry and therapy and also accepts insurance. Talkiatry is another option that is available nearly nationwide and provides more specialized and affordable psychiatric care for those with insurance.
Brightside - Therapy & Medication Using Your Insurance
Together, medication and therapy can help you feel like yourself, faster. Brightside Health develops personalized plans that are unique to you and offers 1 on 1 support from start to finish. United Healthcare, Anthem, Cigna, and Aetna insurance are accepted.
Detailed Review of LifeStance Health
LifeStance earned 3.5 stars overall during our comprehensive review of its services. LifeStance offers a wide range of comprehensive mental health services for kids, teens, adults, families, and couples; however, it scored low on user experience, extra features, and online therapy cost.

How to Find a Provider
To see if you’re eligible for mental health services through LifeStance, click the “Find Provider” button on the website. Keep in mind that LifeStance currently does not have a mobile app. After entering your state and ZIP code, you’ll be directed to a provider directory featuring a range of therapists and psychiatric professionals in your area. While reviewing profiles can take time, it’s a valuable step toward finding a provider who feels like the right fit.
Therapy With LifeStance
Signing up for therapy with LifeStance was easy, but none of the available providers accepted my insurance. Then, when I found a therapist who seemed like a good fit, I couldn’t locate her cash-pay rates online. I messaged customer service through the patient portal, but it took about two business days to get a response.
A representative eventually called me to collect payment info, since there was no option to add it in the portal, and informed me the out-of-pocket rate in my state was $325 per session, which was outside my budget. Thankfully, she suggested a more affordable option: seeing a supervised student therapist for $85 per session, which was a huge relief.
On the day of my session, I didn’t receive a Zoom link by email or find one in the portal. About 10 minutes after the scheduled start time, the office manager emailed it to me, and I was able to join without issue. The student therapist took time to understand my background and goals. She was thoughtful, knowledgeable, and compassionate, on par with fully licensed therapists I’ve seen in the past.
LifeStance Psychiatry
Due to extraordinary out-of-pocket costs in my state, $425 for an initial psychiatry appointment, I did not see a LifeStance psychiatrist. However, the booking process, client forms, and live appointments work exactly like they do with therapy.
LifeStance providers can prescribe medication for anxiety and depression during a medication management appointment, with the specific prescription left to the provider’s discretion. For certain controlled substances, such as Xanax or Adderall, you may be required to attend an in-person visit. If medication is recommended, your provider will send the prescription directly to your local pharmacy.
Specialty Treatments
Many in-person LifeStance clinics offer specialty treatments, including:
- Art therapy
- EMDR therapy
- Ketamine therapy
- Neuropsychological Testing and Evaluation
- Play therapy
- Postpartum depression treatments
- School-based programs
- Somatic therapy
- Spravato treatment
- TMS therapy
Note that these specialties may not be available at every clinic.
How Much Does it Cost?
LifeStance Health costs depend on your location. You must contact customer service to get a range of prices in your area. In my state, out-of-pocket therapy costs $325 per 60-minute therapy session, and $425 for an initial psychiatry appointment. However, a student therapist was available for $85 per 60-minute therapy session.
When I looked at various states’ costs for therapy and medication appointments, prices ranged from $110–$430+ for therapy and $97–$590+ for psychiatry.
Insurance
LifeStance Health accepts 300+ major commercial insurance plans, including Aetna, Cigna, Humana, Magellan, Optum, and more, including some Medicare and Medicaid plans. However, not all providers are required to accept the same plans and acceptance varies.
Out-of-Network Benefits
LifeStance providers can create a superbill to send to your insurance for possible reimbursement. However, whether or not your insurance plan will reimburse for this cost isn’t guaranteed.
Who Does LifeStance Serve?
LifeStance has more than 550 physical locations in 33 states. It treats adults, kids, teens, couples, and families, providing therapy, psychiatry and medication management, group therapy, psychological testing, and more.

LifeStance Health User Reviews
LifeStance currently has a “A+” rating on the Better Business Bureau and a 3.9-star rating on Trustpilot from 1.7k reviews. While some users share positive experiences, a common complaint is inconsistencies with billing.
Reviews from Trustpilot | 3.9 out of 5 stars | 1.7k reviews
Positive reviews from Trustpilot include users noting that they’ve had great experiences with LifeStance both with therapy and medication management. Many users state that treatment plans are effective, and that their LifeStance therapists are high-quality.
Negative reviews from Trustpilot include reports of problems with billing and customer service. Billing issues appear to be common, with customers consistently being overcharged or charged for services they never received. My own experience echoed this as I had to contact customer service to dispute an incorrect charge.
Reviews from BBB | A+ rating
Positive reviews from the BBB include users expressing their satisfactory experiences with therapists. One person says her therapist went above and beyond to ensure her progress in therapy.
Negative reviews from the BBB include reports of users experiencing discrepancies in billing practices and bad customer service.
Reviews from Reddit | r/mentalhealth, r/therapy
Positive reviews from users on Reddit about LifeStance say that most of the therapists on the platform are high quality, as long as you are matched with one that meshes well with you.
Negative reviews from users on Reddit are about LifeStance’s cancellation policy being very difficult to work around and issues with rescheduling. Some users reported problems with billing and unexpected charges.
Alternatives & Competitors
LifeStance is considered a hybrid mental health provider, with appointments available in person or online. A fully virtual psychiatry platform, Talkiatry, is available nearly nationwide (44 US states) and offers more specialized care for those with insurance. Brightside Health also offers extensive insurance acceptance, including some Medicare and Medicaid plans.
If you’re seeking therapy specifically, then Grow Therapy can be extremely affordable with insurance, and its prices are easy to find. If you don’t have insurance, BetterHelp provides therapy with financial assistance for those who qualify. Our readers also get 20% off their first month with the code “choosingtherapy.”
Best for Specialized Psychiatric Care - Talkiatry
Price: ~ $30 copay
Insurance Accepted: Yes, exclusively
Therapy & Psychiatry: Yes
Location: 44 US states
Talkiatry provides medication management for individuals ages five and up. It is available in more states than LifeStance and offers more specialized psychiatric care. If you opt to work with Talkiatry, you know you are working with a certified psychiatrist, whereas with Lifestance, your provider may be more generalized.
Since Talkiatry only accepts in-network patients, those with insurance can typically access quality care at a lower cost. Interestingly, neither platform has its own mobile app, although Talkiatry partners with the HIPPA-complicant Healow app. Its availability could increase convenience for users who prefer to access care through their phone.
For more information, read our full Talkiatry Review.
Pros & Cons
- Longer psychiatry appts. than competitors
- Provides detailed, comprehensive care from psychiatrists
- No therapy independent of psychiatry
- Only accepts in-network patients
Best for Insurance - Brightside Health
Price: $45–$349 monthly
Insurance Accepted: Yes
Therapy & Psychiatry: Yes
Location: US
If you’re searching for widespread insurance acceptance, Brightside Health is a great place to start. It accepts most major plans, including some Medicare and Medicaid plans. This platform offers both therapy and psychiatry all from the ease of one user-friendly app. However, we don’t love that both therapy and medication appointments are limited to 30-minute time slots.
Read our Brightside Health review for more.
Pros & Cons
- Accepts most insurance plans, as well as cash-pay
- Prescribes medication and provides therapy
- Has psychiatric maintenance plan that costs $45 monthly
- Customer service can be a bit slow
- Sessions limited to 30 minutes
Most Transparent Pricing - Grow Therapy
Price: $75–$250+ per session
Insurance Accepted: Yes
Therapy & Psychiatry: Yes
Location: US
LifeStance and Grow Therapy both offer in-person and online therapy and psychiatry, but Grow Therapy is more user-friendly, offering transparent pricing, easy self-service, and responsive providers and customer service. I ended up paying just $75 for a fully licensed therapist, making it my most affordable session all year.
Plus, my Grow Therapy therapist emailed me helpful third-party resources after our first session—something my LifeStance provider did not. Choosing between them will likely depend on insurance coverage and provider availability.
Our full Grow Therapy Review can provide more information.
Pros & Cons
- Most providers accept major insurance plans
- Easy-to-use directory where you can choose your own providers
- Some states have fewer providers
- Cash-pay prices vary by provider
Best Therapy With Financial Aid - BetterHelp
Price: $280–$400 monthly
Insurance Accepted: No
Therapy & Psychiatry: Therapy
Location: US & International
BetterHelp is a reliable mental health platform where people can receive online therapy. It offers some of the more affordable cash-pay prices, plus financial assistance is available for those who qualify, including automatic discounts for students and veterans. This could help you figure out whether they’re the right fit for you without breaking the bank. And don’t forget to use our code “choosingtherapy” for an additional 20% off your first month.

Pros & Cons
- Effective therapist matching algorithm
- Offers financial aid for therapy
- Extremely limited insurance acceptance
- Does not offer medication management
