BetterHelp started accepting insurance in 2025, and Aetna is one of the carriers it names. BetterHelp matches users with a licensed therapist for weekly video sessions, with messaging available between sessions. Many providers accept Aetna insurance on BetterHelp. However, coverage depends on your plan and location. You can check your plan during signup or through Aetna’s member tools.

As of August 26, 2026, BetterHelp’s insurance coverage reached all 50 states plus DC, though provider availability is still limited.7

BetterHelp’s FAQ says, “Many providers on BetterHelp accept Aetna insurance for online therapy. Availability may vary by plan, location, and other factors.” The signup check will tell you whether your plan is covered and an in-network therapist is available.

What Aetna says about BetterHelp coverage

Aetna describes telehealth as a covered benefit, but the details vary by plan. Its telehealth flyer tells members to “confirm telehealth eligibility by checking your member website for plan details or calling the number on your ID card.” Its telemedicine page also recommends checking your plan to see which virtual care options are available. To find mental health care, members can search aetna.com or the Aetna Health app for in-network psychologists and psychiatrists. Aetna also directs members to Teladoc Health for virtual care. While Teladoc owns BetterHelp, it does not mean your plan covers BetterHelp.

Aetna’s public pages do not name BetterHelp. Instead, they highlight CVS Virtual Care, Teladoc Health, and MinuteClinic. Aetna’s virtual mental health vendor flyer lists services such as Talkspace, Brightside, and NOCD, but this may be outdated. You will need to confirm network participation for your specific plan through Aetna’s member tools.

How to confirm your Aetna plan covers BetterHelp

  1. Start BetterHelp signup and complete the short intake quiz.
  2. When prompted, enter your Aetna information. If your plan qualifies, BetterHelp will show your estimated cost before you commit. Existing members may also be able to switch to insurance in the app’s account settings.
  3. Log in at aetna.com or through the Aetna Health app, or call the number on the back of your ID card. Ask whether your plan covers outpatient behavioral telehealth and what your copay is for an in-network virtual therapy session.
  4. Check your plan documents for your exact copay. BetterHelp’s $23 figure is an average for eligible members. Your actual cost depends on your plan and deductible.

What BetterHelp costs with Aetna vs. without

With a qualifying Aetna plan, the average copay is $23 per covered session for one live session per week. Your deductible may apply first. Messaging between sessions is included with the $70 to $100 per week self-pay subscription. BetterHelp says insurance may make more sense when your plan covers online therapy, you have a low deductible, and an in-network provider is available. The subscription may be a better fit if you want messaging or have not met your deductible.

Aetna says a telehealth session generally costs the same as an in-person office visit. Its California telehealth terms also say that in-network cost sharing counts toward your deductible. Early in the plan year, before you meet your deductible, an insured session may cost more than BetterHelp’s self-pay rate. Compare both options before choosing.

If your Aetna plan fails the BetterHelp check

Some Aetna plans will not be accepted during signup, and government-plan variants will not qualify. Aetna Better Health is Aetna’s Medicaid brand, with state plans from Florida to Michigan. BetterHelp does not accept Medicaid or Medicare coverage from any carrier. If your plan is not accepted, you have several options:

  • Self-pay at BetterHelp: $70 to $100 per week, HSA/FSA eligible, with financial aid for those who qualify. Our financial aid guide explains how to apply, and our discount code guide covers the current offer.
  • Talkiatry lists Aetna among its accepted carriers and focuses on psychiatry. It accepts insurance only, verifies your network status before the first visit, and covers that visit if its verification is wrong.
  • Talkspace appeared on Aetna’s virtual mental health vendor from 2023. It offers therapy nationwide, along with medication management for adults.
  • Grow Therapy works with more than 125 plans, including Medicaid, and handles billing and claims. Sessions average $21 with insurance. Rula accepts Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Medicaid in many states, with a typical cost of $15 per session. Both may be options for Aetna Better Health members.

Yes, for many Aetna plans. BetterHelp says many of its providers accept Aetna insurance, but availability varies by plan, location, and other factors. Eligible members pay an average copay of $23 per session. Check your plan during BetterHelp signup or through Aetna’s member tools.

Is BetterHelp covered by Aetna Better Health?

No. Aetna Better Health is Aetna’s Medicaid brand, and BetterHelp providers do not accept Medicaid in any state. Grow Therapy and Rula accept Medicaid in many states.

Does BetterHelp take Ambetter insurance?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Ambetter is not an Aetna product. It is Centene’s marketplace insurance brand, and BetterHelp does not name it on its insurance page. The signup check is the only way to find out whether an Ambetter plan is included among the unnamed 125+ plans.

Does BetterHelp take Blue Cross, Cigna, or Kaiser?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

BetterHelp accepts several regional Blue Cross Blue Shield plans, including Anthem, CareFirst, and Highmark. It also accepts select Cigna and Evernorth behavioral health plans. BetterHelp accepts Kaiser only on certain Mid-Atlantic plans and markets, so elsewhere expect a no and check at signup. Rula works with Kaiser by referral. Our BetterHelp FAQ covers each insurer in more detail.

How much is BetterHelp with Aetna insurance?

Eligible members pay an average of $23 per covered weekly session. Your actual cost depends on your plan, network status, and deductible, and sessions before you meet your deductible may cost more than self-pay. You can find the exact amount in your aetna.com member account or by calling the number on your card.

What if my Aetna plan is not accepted?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

You can use BetterHelp’s self-pay subscription for $70 to $100 per week. It is HSA/FSA eligible, and financial aid is available to those who qualify. You can also try using your Aetna coverage through Talkiatry, Talkspace, Grow Therapy, or Rula.

The fastest way to check is to run your Aetna plan through BetterHelp signup and see your price before committing.

In my experience, patients often find a longer wait time for an in-person therapist. Online platforms, such as BetterHelp, can be an excellent alternative depending on your insurance.
