- No. BetterHelp does not accept TRICARE. Self-pay costs $70 to $100 per week.
- Talkspace accepts TRICARE directly and reports an average member copay of $0.
- Military OneSource provides up to 12 free counseling sessions per issue. Veterans can also receive a free first month at BetterHelp.
BetterHelp offers online therapy through video sessions and messaging. TRICARE covers mental health care for service members, military families, and many retirees. While this includes telehealth, BetterHelp does not accept TRICARE. Military families who want covered online care will need to use a TRICARE-approved provider such as Talkspace or Telemynd.

Some military families have both TRICARE and civilian insurance. BetterHelp accepts more than 125 commercial plans, with coverage available in all 50 states plus DC by mid-2026. A spouse’s employer plan may cover BetterHelp even though TRICARE does not.
Does TRICARE cover therapy and telehealth?
Yes. TRICARE covers mental health care, including individual psychotherapy sessions of up to 60 minutes and family or group sessions of up to 90 minutes. It also covers mental health telehealth visits. These visits have the same costs and referral rules as in-person care.
Your requirements depend on the plan. TRICARE Prime members usually need a referral through their Primary Care Manager. TRICARE Select members can generally schedule with a TRICARE-authorized provider without a referral, although copays and cost-shares vary. The Compare Costs tool on tricare.mil shows the amounts for your plan. Active-duty service members need a referral for all virtual health visits.
TRICARE covers online therapy, but not through BetterHelp. BetterHelp does not provide superbills, and its therapists are not listed as TRICARE-authorized providers. There is no documented way to submit a BetterHelp subscription for TRICARE reimbursement.
Online therapy that takes TRICARE
Talkspace accepts TRICARE for many types of therapy. Eligible plans include Prime, Prime Remote, Select, Reserve Select, Retired Reserve, and both Young Adult options. Talkspace reports an average TRICARE copay of $0, although your actual cost depends on your coverage. You will need the 11-digit DoD benefit number from your ID card. Active-duty members need a referral from their Primary Care Manager. TRICARE coverage through Talkspace is only available in the US.
Telemynd accepts TRICARE and lists Humana Military among its plan partners. It offers visits with therapists and psychiatrists for individuals, couples, and children. Telemynd reports copays as low as $0 with Prime and $33 with Select. Your actual cost depends on your plan and deductible. Active-duty members need authorization from their military treatment facility. For TRICARE Overseas members, Telemynd is available only in Puerto Rico.
Military OneSource provides free, confidential, non-medical counseling for short-term concerns. Eligible users receive up to 12 sessions per issue by video, phone, chat, or in person. The service is available to active-duty members and their immediate families, Guard and reserve members regardless of activation status, eligible survivors, and people within 365 days of separation. It helps with concerns such as stress, relationships, and grief. Diagnosed mental health conditions require clinical treatment through TRICARE.
TRICARE mental health wait times
Military families may turn to services such as BetterHelp after struggling to find available care. A February 2024 GAO report found that service members with urgent referrals to civilian behavioral health providers waited an average of more than two to more than three weeks, depending on the region. Vacancy rates for civil-service behavioral health providers at military treatment facilities exceeded 40% as of January 20231.1
TRICARE still offers coordinated care and plan cost-sharing instead of BetterHelp’s $280 to $400 monthly self-pay cost. If local wait times are long, try a covered telehealth option before paying for BetterHelp. Military OneSource counseling may also help while you wait for a referral or clinical appointment.
BetterHelp’s free first month for veterans
BetterHelp offers veterans one free month of online therapy. A valid payment method is required, but you will not be charged if you cancel within the first month. Standard subscription rates apply after that. The offer is specifically for veterans, so active-duty members and military spouses should not assume they qualify.
After the free month, BetterHelp costs $70 to $100 per week. Our link provides 20% off the first month for other new users. BetterHelp does not say whether discounts can be combined, so expect to use only one offer. Financial aid may reduce the monthly cost by 10% to 40% for eligible users, and veteran status is one of the factors included in the application. Our financial aid guide explains how to apply.
How to check your TRICARE coverage
- Use Talkspace’s TRICARE coverage check with the DoD benefit number from your ID card. You can also search tricare.mil for an authorized telehealth provider.
- If you are an active-duty service member, ask your Primary Care Manager for a referral before scheduling any virtual health visit.
- If you also have a civilian commercial plan, enter it during BetterHelp signup to see whether BetterHelp accepts it.
- Contact Military OneSource for free counseling without a referral. Sessions are confidential from the chain of command, with standard safety exceptions.
What military families report
One military spouse reported paying about $300 per month for Cerebral and BetterHelp without using TRICARE. Other members recommended Military OneSource, a Military and Family Life Counselor, or a Primary Care Manager referral to a TRICARE-approved therapist. Another member could not confirm that BetterHelp had ever accepted TRICARE. In a 2024 discussion asking for a BetterHelp-style service that accepts TRICARE, one member said their Primary Care Manager recommended Doctor on Demand.
We did not find any reports from TRICARE members successfully using BetterHelp’s newer insurance program. This matches BetterHelp’s policy because its commercial insurance rollout does not include TRICARE.
