What Is Ozempic?

Ozempic is the brand name of the medication semaglutide, which is FDA-approved for the treatment of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes. FDA approval is the standard for all prescription medications and requires rigorous clinical testing to prove safety and efficacy. Ozempic is not currently available in generic form.

Wegovy is another brand name for semaglutide, but this medication is only FDA-approved for weight loss. Semaglutide is a GLP1 medication that works with insulin and other hormones in the body to level blood sugars, decrease appetite, and improve glucose utilization. It can be marketed under various brand names for diabetes and weight loss.¹

How Much Does Ozempic Cost Per Month?

The cash price of Ozempic is expensive, at about $973 per pen or about $243 per dose. Ozempic is dosed on a weekly basis, so patients generally need around one pen every month. The cost of Ozempic paid by each patient will depend on many factors, including at which pharmacy the medication is filled (prices vary between pharmacies), whether insurance, a coupon, or other savings programs apply, the cost-sharing status of your insurance plan (if used), and any other discounts or manufacturer programs you may qualify for.

For patients who choose to use insurance, the cost of Ozempic will be determined by your copay and whether or not you have reached your deductible. In general, Ozempic is a brand name preferred medication for insurance plans. This means that co-pays will be more expensive than generic medications. Patients may either pay a fixed dollar amount for each prescription (copay) or a percentage of the medication’s cost (coinsurance).

For patients on Medicare or with no insurance, Novo Nordisk (the manufacturer of Ozempic) offers a Patient Assistance Program, under which patients may qualify to receive Ozempic at little or no cost. There are exclusion criteria (read below). Novo also offers a copay savings card for patients with commercial insurance (also read below).^{2, 3, 4, 5, 6}

3 Ways to Save on Ozempic

There are several ways to save money on an Ozempic prescription, including savings cards, the use of insurance, and savings programs for people with financial needs. Some savings programs may require patients to meet certain criteria before gaining access to a discount.

1. Find Out if Ozempic Is Covered by Your Health Insurance

If you have health insurance, there are several ways to find out if Ozempic is covered and how much it will cost. The most direct way is to go online or call your insurance company and ask about Ozempic coverage. Insurance companies list their formularies online. A formulary is a list unique to every company that changes every year, describing all covered medications and how they are categorized. They may not be the most patient-friendly to read, so calling is usually easier. Also, the manufacturer has a tool to help you identify how much Ozempic may cost you.

Keep in mind that Ozempic is no longer an approved off-label use for weight loss since Wegovy is now commercially available. Therefore, insurance companies will most likely not cover an Ozempic prescription associated solely with a diagnosis code of obesity or weight loss. Prescriptions for these diagnoses must be for Wegovy.¹

Commercial Insurance

For those with commercial insurance, contacting the insurance company directly or searching your plan’s formulary is the best way to determine what your cost of Ozempic will be. Variables that may affect coverage are unique to each company and each plan, but keep in mind that:

• Costs will vary for in-network versus out-of-network pharmacies.
• Different plans within the same company may charge different prices for Ozempic.
• Finding your specific formulary can be difficult, so many insurance websites offer a drug pricing tool once you log into your account.
• Your price for Ozempic may change throughout the year as you hit your deductible and other levels of coverage (or not).

Medicare

Ozempic is covered under most Medicare plans. Like any other insurance, coverage details, including preferred pharmacies, deductibles, and copays, will vary by plan. There is also a tool to estimate your cost for Ozempic under various Medicare plans.³

Medicaid

Medicaid is health insurance that is run by state departments, not federally. This means that every state will have a different drug formulary, including different preferred pharmacies, different covered drugs, and different copays, deductibles, and other cost-sharing limits. To determine whether or not Ozempic is covered under Medicaid in your state, it is best to visit the state’s Medicaid website, where they may have a drug pricing tool, or call a patient assistance line.

TRICARE

Ozempic is a non-formulary drug with TRICARE for active duty service members. This means that patients must first request coverage from Tricare via a form sent by their doctor, and coverage may be denied. For non-active duty patients, Ozempic is covered, and the cost is around $70 monthly. There is a tool to find out if you qualify for Ozempic coverage under TRICARE.⁷

2. Ozempic Coupons & Discount Cards

There are a few options for additional discounts and savings on Ozempic, but not all options apply to all patients.

Novo Nordisk, the company that makes Ozempic, offers a Patient Assistance Program for patients who are on Medicare or have no insurance. In this program, patients qualify to get Ozempic at little or no cost. Further details are below.

Patients who have commercial insurance may qualify for an Ozempic savings card, also from Novo Nordisk. This card may bring co-pays down to as little as $25. Further details are below.

Finally, the Patient Access Network Foundation offers grants to patients to help fund the treatment of their chronic diseases and certain medications. Patients who qualify get a stipend each calendar year towards their treatment. Visit the link for more information.^{8, 9, 10}

As a last resort, patients may use savings cards from third-party companies such as GoodRx to save money on Ozempic. These coupons may only be used alone and may or may not be more expensive than your price with insurance.

What Is the Maximum Ozempic Coupon?

The maximum that you may save on Ozempic depends on individual factors such as income, insurance status, insurance plan, pharmacy at which you fill prescriptions, and diagnosis. The best resource to determine how much Ozempic will cost is to contact your insurance company or the manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, directly.

3. Ozempic Patient Assistance Programs

Patient Assistance programs are often run through manufacturers but may be run through third-party charitable organizations as well. Patient assistance programs are not universal, meaning that each has different eligibility criteria. Factors that may be taken into account are income status, insurance status, citizenship status, and other diagnoses.

For Ozempic, the manufacturer offers a patient assistance program and a patient savings card. A third-party organization called the Patient Assistance Network offers grant funding. Read below to learn more.^{8, 9, 10}

Novo Nordisk Patient Assistance Program

The Novo Nordisk PAP is a program meant for patients who are on Medicare or do not have insurance coverage. If accepted to this program, there is no fee to participate, and patients may receive Ozempic at very little cost or free. Patients with commercial insurance should learn more about the copay savings card.^{9, 10}

Here are the eligibility criteria for the Novo Nordisk Patient Assistance Program:⁹

• Patients must have Medicare OR no health insurance
• Must be U.S. citizens
• Must have income that qualifies as at or below 400% of the federal poverty limits
• Must NOT be enrolled in any other state assistance program (Medicaid, VA benefits, low-income subsidies)

Patient Access Network Foundation (PAN)

The Patient Access Network Foundation (PAN) is a national non-profit that offers funding for patients with severe, life-threatening, and/or chronic illnesses. PAN offers grants for funding both the treatments of chronic diseases and for specific medications that treat them.

Currently, both PAN grants for funding Ozempic and type 2 diabetes are not accepting new applicants, but patients may still sign up to receive a notification when an available slot opens. Once accepted into the fund, patients receive a set amount of money per calendar year to go towards the funding of their specific disease or medication. The PAN is meant for patients of various insurance statuses, so patients must check each grant for specific criteria.⁸
 

Here are the eligibility criteria for the Patient Access Network Foundation grant for type 2 diabetes treatment (PAN):⁸

• Must reside in the US or territories (citizenship is NOT a requirement)
• Have Medicare insurance which covers the treatment or medicine
• Have income at or below 400% of the federal poverty level

Ozempic Alternatives

If all else fails, patients may consider alternative medications to Ozempic. Other GLP1s, such as Januvia, may be preferred under various insurance plans. Alternative diabetic treatments can be much less costly. Free samples of the medication are sometimes available from your doctor’s office. Ask your doctor and pharmacist about resources that may be applicable to you.

Can I Get 3 Months of Ozempic for $25?

The patient co-pay savings card sponsored by Novo Nordisk for patients with commercial insurance offers copays as low as $25 for a one to three-month supply. This program has criteria, so to get this price, patients must qualify. Patients can check their eligibility by visiting the link at the bottom of the page. This card has limitations, such as benefit maximums and annual renewal.¹⁰

How to Get an Ozempic Prescription

Online prescribing is a hot topic in medicine, and laws vary by state. Patients should defer to their doctor, pharmacists, and state resources to determine if getting a prescription for Ozempic via telehealth is legal in their state. In most cases, filling out an online questionnaire does not count as a legal basis for a prescription. providers must speak directly to a patient, whether in person or via video calling. Prescribers are also prohibited from prescribing over state lines; patients must receive medicine in the same state their provider is in. In My Experience

In my experience, Ozempic prices are best managed by the use of an insurance plan. Due to the market demand for the drug, it can face frequent shortages as well. I advise my patients to ask me, their pharmacist, about any possible savings programs our pharmacy may have on any medications and to check out manufacturer savings options as well.

Some patients have attempted to get Ozempic from pharmacies out of the country or have it compounded. This is not recommended, as it’s hard to verify the sources of those drugs. Ozempic is not likely to decrease in price soon, as the patent still has years left before expiration. Nevertheless, Ozempic is a highly effective and safe drug, and patients who can afford it are encouraged to utilize its benefits under healthcare provider supervision.
