Rula Cancellation Policy: Fees, Refunds & How to Cancel

• To cancel one appointment, open Appointments in the Rula portal or Sessions in the app. Tap the three dots beside the appointment and choose Cancel appointment.
• Rula charges $99 for therapy and $150 for psychiatry when an appointment is canceled, rescheduled, or missed inside 24 hours. The fee goes to the card on file, and insurance never covers it.

Canceling Rula is not always a single step. An initial therapy appointment automatically comes with four weekly follow-ups, so canceling that first appointment can remove five sessions at once. Rula, not your provider, sets the late-cancellation fee and charges the card on file. This guide explains the different ways to stop or change care, so you can choose the right route and avoid leaving an appointment on the calendar.

Before you cancel Rula: identify what is not working

Across 669 studies involving 83,834 clients, about one in five people stopped therapy before the work was finished.¹ Before you cancel, take a moment to identify what is pushing you to leave. A surprise bill calls for a different next step than a poor provider fit, a stalled treatment plan, or a move to another state.

The cost changed, or the bill was a surprise

Among U.S. adults with a mental illness who went without care they felt they needed, 59.8% said treatment cost too much.² At Rula, the surprise is often a bill that does not match the estimate. Deductibles may post three to four weeks after a visit, and a retroactive denial can arrive months later.

Rula does not publish a sliding scale or hardship rate. As of September 2026, self-pay costs $150 per therapy session and $175 for a psychiatry follow-up. To update your insurance, open Insurance in the portal, select Edit, and upload photos of the new card. An estimate usually arrives within 24 hours, though it can take up to 48. If the plan is out of network, your options are a rematch or self-pay.

Your therapist or prescriber is not the right fit

People are more likely to leave therapy when the working relationship is weak or their stated preferences are not being met. You can replace your provider without leaving Rula. In Care Team, select the three dots next to the provider, choose Replace provider, give a reason, then filter the directory and book. In the app, open Care Team, select the provider, then choose Find replacement.

Rula automatically cancels future appointments with the old provider. It warns you if the next appointment is inside 24 hours, when the late fee still applies. Switching also restarts you as a new patient, with a fresh assessment and an intake billed as a normal session.³ Rula says a new patient can be seen as soon as the next day, but it does not publish a specific rematch timeline.

You feel finished, or progress has stalled

Therapy may be ready to end when you have met the goals set at the beginning, sessions are no longer bringing up anything new, or your needs now call for a different specialist. If care is no longer medically necessary, Rula allows you to continue only as self-pay and removes insurance from the account. If you are steadily feeling worse, bring that up in your next session.

Your schedule or location has changed

Among adults with an unmet need for care, 47.0% cited a lack of time.² Rula providers can treat you only in states where they are licensed. For a trip lasting less than 30 days, you may need to move session times around the travel. A move lasting more than 30 days requires a new match form with your new state and insurance, and you must cancel the old appointments yourself.

You dread sessions or want to quit after a difficult one

When the urge to quit appears within days of a session that covered painful material, clinicians advise bringing it up in session before acting on it. Symptoms that seem to disappear immediately after difficult work are also worth examining. Dreading every session points more strongly to a problem with fit or safety.

Rula does not offer a pause feature. Your options are to cancel what is booked and rebook later, or ask your provider for a planned break.

How to cancel a Rula appointment

Cancel or reschedule one appointment

In the portal, open Appointments, select the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner of the appointment, then choose Cancel appointment. For a first or last session, select a reason and choose Continue. If you have more sessions booked, Rula asks whether you want to cancel or reschedule. The app follows the same process under Sessions.

Canceling an initial therapy appointment also cancels the four weekly follow-ups Rula automatically books with it. Canceling a follow-up affects only that session.⁴

Stop care altogether

Cancel every upcoming appointment to stop future charges, apart from any balance you already owe. If 30 days pass without a new booking, your provider makes one documented outreach attempt. If you do not answer within 10 days, the provider files a discharge note that clears your calendar without your consent.⁵

To return later, open Care Team, select Past providers, choose Book Appointment, and complete the intake form again. Providers who have left Rula remain visible, but you cannot book with them.

Delete your Rula account and data

There is no delete button in the portal or app. Account closure, card removal, and data deletion all go through the help center chat widget. Rula responds to a data request within 10 business days.⁶

Your card remains on file until any balance is settled. Deleting the account does not remove your clinical record. Rula’s privacy policy says requests generally cannot erase medical records, provider notes, or billing records kept under HIPAA and state rules.⁷ Messages with your provider are stored for at least 10 years.

Rula cancellation fees and refunds

You agree to the 24-hour policy during registration. Once a missed-appointment note is filed, the charge follows automatically.

Once the missed-appointment note is in your chart, your therapist cannot reverse the fee. Rula’s provider-facing policy, which is not published to patients, says the fee stands when the record shows that the provider tried to reach you and sent the appointment details. It may be waived for a first miss when no outreach was documented, and it cannot apply to an appointment you did not consent to. After three consecutive no-show charges, Rula removes your future appointments instead of charging you again.⁸

Rula does not publish a satisfaction guarantee, and there is no prepaid balance to prorate. Billing reviews your statements and explanations of benefits, then returns money when it finds an error.⁹ As of September 2026, Rula has a 4.5 out of 5 rating across more than 5,000 Trustpilot reviews. Reviewers often describe the fee as steep but fair. What happens if your Rula provider cancels or no-shows

Rula tells clients to wait 15 minutes, then contact support to reschedule or request a rematch. You are not charged when a provider no-shows or cancels inside 24 hours,¹² but Rula does not offer a credit for the lost time.

Reviewers mention the missing credit more than any other cancellation issue, including an August 2026 no-show that Rula acknowledged in writing but did not compensate.¹⁰ A therapist who cancels a follow-up inside 24 hours can still trigger a charge by selecting the reason that says the client was not available. Check your statement after a provider cancellation.⁸

Keeping prescriptions and refills on track

Handle prescriptions before canceling your appointments. A refill usually requires a recent visit. Patients typically see their prescriber every one to three months, and a controlled substance may require a follow-up before each refill.¹³ Ask at least five business days before you need the medication. Support cannot approve prescriptions.

When care ends, Rula caps a discharge prescription for a Schedule II controlled substance at 30 days.¹⁴ A psychiatric discharge also includes a letter with a reason written for the patient and a resource list. Rula advises prescribers to consider continuing visits until the patient has booked a first appointment with someone new, so arrange that appointment before your last visit. Stopping a psychiatric medication is a clinical decision, and national guidance is to speak with a provider first.¹⁵

Rula’s no-show process for providers

Your provider resends the session link at three minutes and calls at five. They then mark the no-show and file a note stating whether you should be charged. When you cancel late, Rula files that note for the provider, and the provider is paid. A provider who waives your fee gives up that payment. Three instances of provider lateness, no-shows, or late cancellations pause new client referrals to that clinician.⁸

Switching to another provider inside Rula costs one new intake session. Your insurance, licensing, and billing information carry over.
