Which Kaiser regions Rula covers

Rula’s live sign-up dropdown showed 15 Kaiser Permanente entries when it was checked on September 13, 2026. Those entries were split by region and plan type.

Selecting California returned 79 insurance options, including three Kaiser Southern California entries. Oregon, New York and Texas returned none.

Kaiser’s Hawaii facility directory lists Rula Health as an affiliated behavioral health facility that accepts HMO, Medicaid QUEST and Senior Advantage plans. The listing says a referral may be required.

Kaiser referral rules by region

Kaiser is the only carrier Rula identifies as requiring a referral in some regions. The rule depends on your plan and the care you are seeking.

• Kaiser Hawaii: A referral is required for therapy and psychiatry.
• Kaiser Southern California: A referral is required for psychiatry only. Rula says therapy does not require one.
• Kaiser Northern California: A referral is required for therapy. Psychiatry is not currently offered through Rula.
• All other Kaiser plans: Rula says no referral is required for therapy or psychiatry. Kaiser does not publish Rula-specific guidance for Colorado, Georgia or Washington, so confirm with Kaiser before your first session.

Before booking, Rula advises Kaiser patients in every region to contact their Kaiser primary care provider or Kaiser’s authorization department. Kaiser Northern California says care from an external clinician is generally not covered without a referral to that specific provider. Kaiser’s Southern California member page does not address outside platforms directly, so confirm there as well.

Kaiser Northern California

Rula’s help center lists Kaiser Northern California as accepted, but the plan is filtered out of the patient-facing dropdown. You cannot select it yourself. Instead, Kaiser must issue an external referral.

The process starts with an evaluation at your local Kaiser mental health clinic. Call Mental Health and Addiction Medicine Services at 888-937-5748. For questions about an existing referral, call the External Referral Care Navigators at 833-392-0064. Authorization letters usually appear within a few business days in your kp.org account under Medical Record, then Letters.

If your Rula therapist later recommends medication management, group therapy or a higher level of care, call your local Kaiser mental health clinic and request another evaluation. Rula says this process is unique to Northern California.

Kaiser Southern California and psychiatry

Rula says Southern California members can book therapy without a referral. Psychiatry follows a different process: your Rula therapist refers you back to Kaiser. The stated exception is San Bernardino County, where patients may be referred to Rula for psychiatry.

To start that process, meet with a Rula therapist and request a psychiatry referral during the session. The therapist submits it, and Kaiser contacts you to schedule. You do not have to keep seeing that therapist afterward.

According to Rula, a Kaiser referral covers 60-minute therapy sessions and an initial mental health evaluation without medication. It does not cover medication evaluations.

Kaiser Mid-Atlantic

Kaiser’s Mid-Atlantic guidance says members do not need a referral to see a contracted provider in its approved network. You contact the provider directly and identify yourself as a Kaiser member.

Rula is not named on Kaiser’s published Mid-Atlantic contracted provider list. Before booking, call the behavioral health access line at 866-530-8778 to confirm. Virginia, Maryland and DC all show Kaiser Mid-Atlantic options in Rula’s dropdown. The Medicaid option appears for Virginia.

Does Rula take Kaiser Medi-Cal?

Yes, in Southern California. Kaiser Permanente Southern California Medi-Cal is a selectable plan in Rula’s California sign-up dropdown.

Kaiser Northern California Medi-Cal appears in Rula’s internal carrier data but is not offered to patients at sign-up. Northern California members must use the Kaiser referral process instead.

Rula accepts managed Medicaid from select insurers in select states. Medicaid members who are in network can book therapy, but not psychiatry. The other Kaiser Medicaid options in Rula’s list are Kaiser Hawaii Medicaid QUEST and Kaiser Mid-Atlantic Medicaid in Virginia.

Most dual-eligible plans are out of network with Rula, so check carefully if you have both Medicare and Medicaid.

Kaiser’s Southern California mental health page says Medi-Cal members may be able to access additional mental health services outside Kaiser Permanente. It directs members to ask their doctor how to use those services under their plan.

What Kaiser members pay

Rula publishes an average cost of $15 a session with insurance. Your actual cost depends on your benefits and deductible, and neither Rula nor Kaiser publishes a Kaiser-specific copay.

Kaiser members often report paying $0 per session. Some long-term users say they have never been charged. The charges mentioned most often involve missed appointments or late cancellations. A smaller number of members report unexpected bills. Some Southern California members were quoted a $0 copay by both Rula and Kaiser member services, then received a $150 self-pay invoice after their first session.

Across all carriers, Rula has a Trustpilot rating of 4.5 out of 5 from 5,032 reviews. Rula says its benefits estimates are not guaranteed and recommends checking directly with your insurer. Confirm with both Kaiser and Rula because Kaiser controls the referral and authorization.

Without insurance, Rula charges $150 for a 60-minute individual therapy session, $165 for couples or family therapy, $225 for a psychiatry intake and $175 for a 30-minute psychiatry follow-up. Rula does not bill out-of-network insurance directly, but it will provide a superbill for you to submit. HSA and FSA cards are accepted.

How to check your Kaiser plan

You can review Rula’s carrier list without creating an account or entering a payment method.

1. Open Rula’s sign-up form and enter your date of birth.
2. Select your state. The state you choose determines which Kaiser entries appear.
3. Open the insurance dropdown. Look for Kaiser Permanente with your region in brackets, followed by your plan type.
4. Choose your type of care. Kaiser Northern California members and Medicaid members will not see psychiatry as an option.
5. If Kaiser does not appear for your state, or you live in Northern California, call Kaiser’s behavioral health line and ask about an external referral instead of signing up directly.

Rula vs. Kaiser’s in-house mental health care

Northern California members must complete an evaluation at a Kaiser mental health clinic before Kaiser authorizes outside care. The authorization names the clinician or group you can see. Members describe this intake screening as the most difficult step, and some say they were told after a phone screening that therapy was not medically necessary.

Rula says providers may be available as soon as the next day. When its California directory was checked on September 13, 2026, the listed providers had appointments 2 to 6 days out.

Keeping care inside Kaiser has practical benefits. Medication management stays with a Kaiser psychiatrist, prescriptions go through Kaiser pharmacy and your records remain in one system. Members report problems when Rula and Kaiser need to coordinate, including Kaiser pharmacies declining prescriptions from Rula prescribers. A common approach is to use Rula for therapy and Kaiser for medication.

Members also describe trying several Rula therapists before finding the right fit. They often praise how quickly the app lets them switch and rebook.
