What Is Saxenda?

Saxenda, with the active ingredient liraglutide, is an injectable medication FDA-approved to be used in chronic weight management alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. When a medication is FDA-approved, it means that it has been tested and approved by the FDA as safe and effective for its labeled use. Saxenda belongs to a class of medications called glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1). These medications are thought to work by mimicking a hormone known to regulate hunger, known as GLP-1, and decrease a person’s appetite.1

Is There a Generic of Saxenda?

No, there is currently no generic version of Saxenda. It is only available as a branded medication.

Comparing prices between pharmacies may also help to lower the cost.

How Much Does Saxenda Cost With Health Insurance?

When paying for Saxenda through insurance, how much you pay will depend on your coverage. Your coverage may vary for Saxenda depending on the type of insurance you have, who your plan provider is, and other factors, such as the tier your medication is on. Contact your insurance company to better understand your coverage for Saxenda.

Commercial Insurance

Many commercial insurance plans can cover Saxenda, but not all plans may do so as coverage can differ between plans. Sometimes, commercial insurance plans will require prior authorizations where a doctor provides an explanation about why you are being prescribed Saxenda. Contact your insurance provider to understand whether Saxenda is covered under your policy.3

Medicare

Medicare Part D, the prescription portion of Medicare, typically does not cover weight management prescriptions. Although, select Medigap and Medicare Advantage plans may cover medications for obesity. For further questions on the coverage of Saxenda through Medicare, contact your insurance provider.3

Medicaid

Coverage through Medicaid depends on the state you live in as each state has its own plans and coverages. Some states may not cover weight management medications such as Saxenda. Check with your state’s Medicaid website or call your representative for information on Saxenda’s coverage.3

TRICARE

Tricare may provide coverage for Saxenda in certain situations. To determine if Saxenda is covered, contact your Tricare network provider or Military Treatment Facility. Your doctor may be required to submit a prior authorization to your insurance.3

Saxenda Coupons & Discount Cards

Saxenda can be an expensive medication to obtain, especially if you do not have insurance to help reduce the cost. If you do not have insurance, you can use discount cards to help reduce the cost. You can obtain them by searching for Saxenda discount cards online, such as GoodRx and OptumRx. When you download your card, give the information to your pharmacy so they can update the pricing.

Saxenda’s manufacturer had a savings card that could be used alongside commercial insurance, but it has now been discontinued. Any patient enrolled before June 30, 2023 had these benefits stopped on December 31, 2023.4

Saxenda Patient Assistance Program

Novo Nordisk, Saxenda’s manufacturer, offers an assistance program that can be used to provide medications at no cost to those who qualify. This program has no registration charge or monthly fees. To be eligible for this program, you must be a US citizen or legal resident, have a total household income that is at or below 400% of the federal poverty level, have Medicare or no insurance. Also, you cannot be enrolled in or qualify for any other federal, state, or government program.

When you apply, you will likely need specific health information, such as your health care provider’s name, state, and email address, as well as your insurance cards, recent tax documents, and proof of income. Once your documents have been sent into Novo Nordisk, you will hear about the decision. If approved, your medication will be sent to your health care provider’s office for you to pick up.5

The PAN Foundation is another financial assistance program that can help people with serious conditions afford their out-of-pocket treatment costs. You are able to search for funds for certain diseases, medications, or services. You can apply for financial assistance from any existing program for a specific medication. Currently, there are no funds for weight loss medications such as Saxenda.6

Other Ways to Find Saxenda Coupons & Discount Cards

Finding coupons online for Saxenda can be as simple as searching ‘Saxenda coupon’ in a search engine. You can receive a coupon card through physical mail, online resources, mobile applications, and even through pharmacies.

Pharmacy Discounts & Savings Cards

Savings cards may help with the cost of Saxenda when you do not have insurance to help cover the cost. Some pharmacies have their own coupon cards that can be applied to medications when there is no insurance applied to the prescription. To utilize these pharmacy coupons, ask the pharmacy staff if there are any coupons available and to apply them to the prescription if applicable.

Online Resources & Apps

Many prescription coupon services have different platforms that make getting a savings card more accessible, such as through a website and mobile applications. They often work similarly, having a search bar that you can input the name of your medication, strength, quantity, as well as the pharmacy chain you wish to fill your medication with. When you input all your information, it will give the codes that pharmacies need to apply the discount to your prescription.

Are There Any Restrictions or Limitations on the Use of Saxenda Coupons or Assistance Programs?

There are limitations with using these coupons and programs. Savings coupons are typically only allowed for cash paying patients, unable to be used alongside insurance, while the Novo Nordisk program is only eligible for select patients depending on if they meet the federal poverty line.

Can I Use Saxenda Coupons or Assistance Programs at Any Pharmacy?

Coupons are accepted at most pharmacies, but not all. For example, pharmacy savings cards associated with a specific chain cannot be used anywhere else. If you are eligible for the Saxenda manufacturer’s assistance program, the medication will be sent directly to your doctor and that is where you can obtain your medication.5

How to Get a Saxenda Prescription

Saxenda is a medication that is only available through a prescription. To obtain a prescription, you will need to see a doctor which can be done through an in-person appointment and sometimes through telehealth services. At your appointment, they will review your weight and health history to determine if you are a good candidate for Saxenda. If you are in search of a doctor, call your insurance to see who is within your network or search online for accessible physicians.

In my experience, Saxenda coupons can make the medication more accessible by lowering the cost. It is one of many weight loss medications available, but cost savings are important when patients find treatments that may suit them well. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information about Saxenda coupons and cost savings.
