At a glance
  • Text messaging therapy involves texting with a licensed therapist through a secure app. Messaging-only plans cost $48 to $69 a week, and BetterHelp’s messaging plus a weekly live session costs $70 to $100.
  • Talkspace is the only platform that states text therapy can be covered by insurance, and most of its insured members pay a $0 copay. BetterHelp’s insurance route lists messaging between sessions as not included.
  • Free text lines such as 988 and Crisis Text Line (text HOME to 741741) give crisis and emotional support from trained counselors and volunteers. They are not therapy.

Text messaging therapy is therapy with a licensed therapist carried out in writing, inside the platform’s app. You write whenever you like and the therapist answers later, and some services also offer live chat sessions. BetterHelp, a subscription service with more than 30,000 licensed therapists, includes unlimited messaging and one live session a week in every self-pay plan. Its insurance route is built around the covered weekly session and may leave messaging out.

Start BetterHelp’s matching questionnaire to get a therapist you can message any time. The Choosing Therapy link applies 20% off your first month automatically.

How text therapy works

Text therapy comes in two forms. With asynchronous messaging, you send a message and the therapist replies during their working time, so the conversation runs over days like email. Live chat is a booked session where you both type in real time.

On BetterHelp, messaging needs no scheduling, and the weekly live session can be held by video, phone or live chat. Talkspace’s messaging plans take text, voice or video messages with no limit, and its live sessions can also be held by chat. Online-Therapy.com messaging is unlimited Monday to Friday, and its live sessions can be held by text chat.

How much does text therapy cost?

Text therapy costs $48 to $69 a week on a messaging-only plan and from $70 a week for messaging plus a weekly live session, paying out of pocket.

Messages only

Online-Therapy.com Basic is the cheapest texting plan of the four. It is $48 a week for the first month with its 20% discount, then $60, billed monthly. That is about $192 for the first four weeks and $240 for each four weeks after. Online-Therapy.com Basic does not have live sessions. See Online-Therapy.com’s messaging plans.

Talkspace Messaging only costs $69 a week, about $276 a month, and quarterly or biannual billing saves 10 to 20 percent. See Talkspace’s messaging plans.

Messages plus a weekly live session

BetterHelp costs $70 to $100 a week in the US, or $260 to $400 a month, billed weekly or monthly. Each subscription includes unlimited messaging and one 30- or 45-minute live session a week. HSA and FSA cards are accepted. A $15 fee may apply to sessions missed or canceled within 24 hours.1 Unused sessions do not roll over. The BetterHelp discount code page explains the first-month offer.

For comparison, Online-Therapy.com Standard costs $72 a week in the first month and $90 after, with one weekly live session that can be held by text chat, and Talkspace Video + messaging costs $99 a week.

Does insurance cover text therapy?

Insurance covers text therapy on some plans, and Talkspace is the one platform here that states plainly that it can.2 Coverage for messaging depends on your plan and the platform you use.

Talkspace with insurance

Talkspace bills insurers including Premera, Cigna, Optum, Aetna and Blue Cross Blue Shield. It says most insured members have a $0 copay, and its pricing page puts the average at $10 a session.3 It takes Medicare in all 50 states and TRICARE East, but not Medicaid. With insurance, you start each messaging session yourself. Covered formats vary by plan, so Talkspace asks members to confirm messaging with their benefits provider.

BetterHelp with insurance

BetterHelp is in network with more than 125 commercial plans, with copays as low as $15, but does not take Medicaid, Medicare or TRICARE. Its insurance route is a separate, session-based service with one covered live session a week. The comparison table on its insurance page lists messaging between sessions as not included.4 The insurer-by-insurer sections of the same page say messaging may be available depending on your plan, and some insured members report being offered video sessions only. If texting matters to you, confirm what your plan includes before you finish signup.

Online-Therapy.com and Grow Therapy

Online-Therapy.com takes no insurance but gives itemized receipts you can submit yourself.5 Grow Therapy takes more than 125 plans, including Medicaid, at an average of $21 a session or less, for booked live sessions with portal messaging between them.

How to start text therapy on BetterHelp

We walked through the first two steps of BetterHelp’s signup flow in a browser on October 12, 2026, without creating an account. Steps 3 and 4 come from earlier walks in September 2026.

  1. Open the signup through the Choosing Therapy link. A banner confirms 20% off your first month, with the code choosingtherapy20 applied for you.
  2. Pick Individual or Couples on the first of eight quiz screens, then choose your country.
  3. Answer the matching questions. One asks how you prefer to communicate with your therapist: mostly messaging, mostly phone or video, or not sure yet.
  4. Choose how to pay. Pick out of pocket if you want messaging included.
  5. Once matched, usually within 24 to 48 hours by BetterHelp’s figures, message your therapist any time and book your weekly live session.

Get matched with a BetterHelp therapist you can text, and choose mostly messaging in the questionnaire.

Does therapy over text work?

Therapy over text worked as well as weekly video therapy for depression in a 2025 randomized trial of 850 adults. The trial ran on the Talkspace platform and was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health.6 At 12 weeks, 47.5 percent of the messaging group and 47.2 percent of the video group had responded, and remission rates were 31.4 percent and 30.3 percent. By week five, 13.2 percent of the messaging group had dropped out, compared with 21.3 percent of the video group. Nobody in the trial went without treatment for comparison, and two of the authors were employed by Talkspace or held its grants.

An earlier trial of 83 adults with moderate depression found large improvements with both messaging and video, and the gap between the two groups was not statistically significant.7 For live chat, a 2017 systematic review of 24 studies found lasting improvements against waiting-list groups and results equal to usual care.8 The two messaging trials compared text with video; neither included in-person sessions.

What users say about therapy through text

BetterHelp’s Trustpilot score is 3.8 out of 5 from 9,721 reviews as of October 2026. Reviewers who mention messaging like writing at their own pace and moving between messages and calls. One who had used both found video sessions better. Critical reviews mention slow message replies, though billing is the most common complaint overall.

Talkspace holds 4.4 out of 5 from 2,391 Trustpilot reviews, and its messaging reviews mostly praise contact between sessions, such as being able to write about a problem as it happens. Reviewers who tested the service were split on reply speed, some heard back within hours, while others found a full day’s wait too long.

In forum discussions, people with phone anxiety, autism or a tendency to freeze when speaking say writing lets them say what they cannot say aloud. Others say text loses tone of voice and body language.

Who text therapy suits

Text therapy suits people who find writing easier than speaking or who work irregular hours. You can write something down while it is fresh and reread the replies later, and you get contact between sessions, which traditional care rarely includes.

A local therapist from your insurance directory offers face-to-face sessions, with tone and body language in the room, and one clinician you can stay with for years. Messaging is usually not part of in-person therapy. BetterHelp’s cost comparison marks it as typically not included, and clients describe local therapists keeping texts to scheduling unless a method such as DBT calls for it. BetterHelp puts in-person sessions at $100 to $200 each, and Grow Therapy’s cost guide puts them at $0 to $50 with insurance and $100 to over $200 out of pocket.

Text therapy is a poor fit in a crisis. BetterHelp and Talkspace both tell anyone in danger not to use their sites, and Grow labels its portal messages non-emergency. Call or text 988 if you are in crisis, and contact emergency services if anyone is in immediate danger.

When BetterHelp is not the right fit for texting

BetterHelp suits cash-pay readers who want unlimited messaging with a weekly live session included. These readers have a better match elsewhere:

  • You want text therapy covered by insurance. Talkspace states that its text therapy can be covered and that most insured members pay $0. Check Talkspace with your insurance.
  • You want the lowest price and only need messages. Online-Therapy.com Basic starts at $48 a week and Talkspace Messaging only costs $69. Compare Online-Therapy.com’s plans.
  • You are under 18. BetterHelp does not serve minors. Talkspace sells a teen messaging plan at $69 a week.
  • You have Medicaid and can use live sessions. Grow Therapy takes Medicaid and more than 125 other plans. See Grow Therapy’s providers.

Free therapy text lines and online chat

No free text number connects you with a licensed therapist for ongoing therapy. These free services give crisis or emotional support from trained counselors and volunteers, at any hour:

  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: text any message to 988, or text AYUDA to 988 for a Spanish-speaking counselor. It is free and confidential, and it helps with emotional distress, mental health struggles and alcohol or drug concerns.9
  • Crisis Text Line: text HOME to 741741 anywhere in the US to reach a trained volunteer crisis counselor, usually within five minutes, for a conversation of 15 to 45 minutes. The volunteers are not medical professionals. In Canada, text 686868; in the UK, 85258; in Ireland, 50808.11
  • Veterans Crisis Line: text 838255, or call 988 and press 1.
  • 7 Cups: free, anonymous online chat with trained volunteer listeners. Listeners do not give advice.2 Cups also sells paid therapy with licensed therapists, with no price listed on its page.10

In a survey of 85,877 Crisis Text Line texters from 2017 to 2018, nearly 90 percent of suicidal texters rated the conversation helpful and nearly half said they felt less suicidal by its end. Those figures are the texters’ own ratings; the survey did not measure clinical outcomes.11

The closest you can get to free text therapy with a licensed therapist is insurance with a $0 copay, which Talkspace says most of its insured members pay. BetterHelp and Online-Therapy.com offer financial aid that can lower the price; the BetterHelp financial aid guide covers how to apply.

If you want messaging with a licensed therapist and a weekly session included, start with BetterHelp, or read the full BetterHelp review first.
