At a glance
  • Conditionally, yes. In Talkiatry’s own words, its psychiatrists “can prescribe Adderall and other controlled medications through virtual visits where clinically appropriate and legally permissible,” and “a prescription is never guaranteed.”
  • The conditions: your state’s telehealth laws must allow it, a 60-minute evaluation comes first, and the psychiatrist alone decides, including for people already taking Adderall.
  • Talkiatry bills insurance, so checking that your plan is in network is the first step.

Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice where licensed physicians see patients over video and bill through insurance. Adderall is a prescription stimulant, a combination of dextroamphetamine and amphetamine used to treat ADHD, and a Schedule II controlled substance, the most tightly regulated prescription tier. Talkiatry’s psychiatrists can prescribe Adderall by video in most of the states where they operate, first after a 60-minute evaluation and only if your state law allows it. Even with an evaluation, a prescription is never guaranteed.

Talkiatry’s answer, in its own words

Talkiatry’s Adderall page, medically reviewed in June 2026, states it directly: “Talkiatry psychiatrists can prescribe Adderall and other controlled medications through virtual visits where clinically appropriate and legally permissible. After a thorough evaluation during your first appointment, your psychiatrist will determine whether Adderall is the right fit for your treatment plan. A prescription is never guaranteed.”1

Per its help center, all Talkiatry psychiatrists are medical doctors, so they can prescribe any medication they judge appropriate, with benzodiazepines (Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin, Valium) and stimulants (Adderall, Ritalin) named as the common controlled categories. Talkiatry treats Xanax separately; see its Xanax prescription policy.2 Two conditions apply to every such prescription: the psychiatrist must find the medication appropriate “after they provide an initial evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment plan,” and “your state’s laws need to allow doctors to prescribe controlled substances without an in-person visit.”2

If you are already taking Adderall and switching providers: “there’s no guarantee your Talkiatry clinician will agree with your past doctors on your condition or on the treatment plan you’re currently on.”2 A transfer is a new evaluation, and the new doctor’s judgment governs.

Adderall, Vyvanse, and similar

As of August 26, 2026, per talkiatry.com. State law changes; the evaluation applies your state’s current rules.

Which states allow it

Talkiatry says its DEA-registered psychiatrists can prescribe controlled substances, including stimulants for ADHD, “in most of the states where we operate.”3 The exceptions come from state law, and Talkiatry’s own guide, published June 2026, names them: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Hawaii, Louisiana, Minnesota, and Rhode Island prohibit telehealth prescribing of controlled substances entirely, and New Jersey does not permit Schedule II telehealth prescriptions for adults.3 A few other states restrict specific categories.

Neither Texas nor Florida appears on Talkiatry’s published list of blocking states, and both are active Talkiatry states with large clinician rosters. Talkiatry does not publish a full state-by-state rulebook, though, so treat the evaluation itself as the authority: your psychiatrist applies your state’s current rules. You must also be physically in a state your clinician is licensed for during the visit, and joining from elsewhere can void the appointment and trigger the $100 missed-visit fee.

Federal telehealth rules through December 31, 2026

Federal law normally requires an in-person evaluation before controlled substances can be prescribed remotely (the Ryan Haight Act). COVID-era flexibilities suspended that requirement, and the DEA’s fourth extension keeps them in place through December 31, 2026, allowing DEA-registered practitioners to prescribe Schedule II through V medications by video without a prior in-person visit.4 A permanent replacement rule is expected but not final. What Talkiatry does is federally permitted today; the restrictions come from state law, and the federal flexibility currently runs through the end of 2026.

How prescriptions and refills work

The evaluation happens at the hour-long first visit. If state law allows and the psychiatrist judges it appropriate, a prescription can follow from that visit, though it is never promised in advance. The prescription goes to your own pharmacy and bills through your drug coverage.

Federal regulation prohibits refills on Schedule II prescriptions: “The refilling of a prescription for a controlled substance listed in Schedule II is prohibited,” with a new prescription required each time, though a prescriber may issue multiple prescriptions covering up to a 90-day supply where state law permits.5 MedlinePlus gives patients the same instruction: the prescription is not refillable, so keep regular appointments.6 Talkiatry’s own rule fits that cadence: no refill without a visit in the past 90 days, with follow-ups running about 30 minutes and billing through insurance like any visit. Budget for ongoing appointments as part of the total cost.

Talkiatry’s page acknowledges that nationwide stimulant shortages happen, in which case your psychiatrist can redirect the prescription to another pharmacy or discuss alternatives.1

Xanax, Vyvanse, Ritalin, and other controlled medications

The same conditions cover the rest of the controlled list. Talkiatry’s help center names benzodiazepines like Xanax alongside stimulants as prescribable where state law allows, after evaluation, at the clinician’s judgment.2 Its ADHD materials list Ritalin, Vyvanse, and Concerta with Adderall as Schedule II stimulants under the same telehealth rules.3 Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) is, like Adderall, a central nervous system stimulant with MedlinePlus habit-forming warnings.7 No specific medication is promised in any of these cases and is decided instead in the evaluation.

The non-stimulant route works everywhere

State telehealth restrictions do not apply to non-controlled medications. Talkiatry’s ADHD pages list Strattera (atomoxetine), Qelbree, Intuniv (guanfacine), and Kapvay, plus Wellbutrin prescribed off-label, and its guide notes non-stimulant options are “available online everywhere.”3 For a reader in one of the prohibiting states, that is the path Talkiatry itself can offer, alongside local in-person psychiatry for stimulant treatment.

Insurance and cost

Talkiatry bills insurance and does not take Medicaid. Most patients pay $30 or less per visit after insurance, by Talkiatry’s own claim, though your plan’s deductible status can make a given visit cost considerably more. The signup check confirms your plan before anything is booked.

If Talkiatry cannot serve you, the alternatives: Brightside Health evaluates and treats ADHD, prescribing stimulants only in Arizona, Oregon, and Washington with non-stimulant options elsewhere, at $95 per month self-pay for psychiatry. Rula offers psychiatry with published self-pay rates ($225 intake, $175 follow-ups) and Medicaid in many states. BetterHelp never prescribes controlled substances, on either its therapy or its psychiatry side. And ongoing stimulant treatment through a local, in-person psychiatrist remains the route every state permits.

Safety notes

Adderall’s MedlinePlus entry carries this warning: “The combination of dextroamphetamine and amphetamine can be habit-forming. Do not take a larger dose, take it more often, or take it for a longer time than prescribed by your doctor.”6 Talkiatry’s own pages say the same: stimulants can be misused, so they are carefully prescribed and monitored, and taking them exactly as directed matters.1

Talkiatry does not provide emergency care. If you or someone you know is in crisis, call 911 or the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Talkiatry prescribe Adderall?

Yes, conditionally: where your state’s laws allow telehealth controlled-substance prescribing, after a full first-visit evaluation, and only if your psychiatrist finds it appropriate. Talkiatry’s own pages state a prescription is never guaranteed.

Will Talkiatry prescribe Adderall if I already take it?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Not automatically. Talkiatry’s help center says there is no guarantee its clinician will agree with your previous doctor’s treatment plan; the new evaluation governs. Bring your treatment history to the first visit.

Does Talkiatry prescribe Xanax or other benzodiazepines?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Under the same conditions, yes: benzodiazepines like Xanax, Ativan, and Klonopin are among the controlled medications Talkiatry’s psychiatrists can prescribe where state law allows, after evaluation, at their judgment.

Does Talkiatry prescribe stimulants like Vyvanse or Ritalin?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

They follow the same rules as Adderall: Schedule II stimulants that Talkiatry’s psychiatrists can prescribe in states that permit telehealth prescribing, once an evaluation supports it.

Can Talkiatry prescribe Adderall or controlled substances in Texas?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Texas is not on Talkiatry’s published list of states that block telehealth controlled-substance prescribing, and Talkiatry operates in Texas with a large clinician roster. Your psychiatrist applies the current Texas rules at your evaluation.

Can Talkiatry prescribe controlled substances in Florida?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Florida is likewise absent from Talkiatry’s published list of blocking states and is one of its largest state footprints. As everywhere, the evaluation and your psychiatrist’s judgment decide the prescription.

Which states block it entirely?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Per Talkiatry’s guide: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Hawaii, Louisiana, Minnesota, and Rhode Island prohibit telehealth controlled-substance prescribing, and New Jersey bars Schedule II telehealth prescriptions for adults. Non-stimulant ADHD medications remain available online everywhere.

How do Adderall refills work at Talkiatry?

Click here to open the answer container.Click here to close the answer container.

Schedule II prescriptions cannot be refilled under federal law; each fill needs a new prescription, and Talkiatry requires a visit within the past 90 days to issue one. Plan on regular follow-ups, roughly 30 minutes each, billed through your insurance. Our Talkiatry review covers what the ongoing care experience is like, and if the conditions above fit your situation, the signup check confirms your insurance first.
