At a glance

On an iPhone, start with the free Medications feature in Apple Health, which sends a follow-up reminder 30 minutes after a missed dose and can sound through silent mode. On a Samsung Galaxy phone, Samsung Health has a free equivalent.

If someone else needs to know when you miss a dose, Medisafe alerts a chosen contact about an hour after the scheduled time, on iPhone and Android. It’s free in the US with Premium at $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year, and paid-only outside the US since January 1, 2026.

About 49% of people with major psychiatric disorders don’t take their medication as prescribed, and we found only two small studies testing reminder apps for psychiatric medication.1

If you’re looking for help remembering medication, start with a practical question: what do you need the app to do? You may want a reminder that’s hard to miss, a refill alert, or a way to let someone you trust know when a dose hasn’t been logged. That makes it easier to choose an app you’ll actually use.

A medication management app reminds you when a dose is due and records what you took. Some also check drug interactions or alert a family member about a missed dose. Look for a reminder that repeats until you log the dose, and check who can access your data before entering your medications. As of October 2026, Round Health and Mango Health are no longer in the US App Store, so this guide focuses on available options.

If you also need help with prescriptions or treatment changes, Talkiatry, ChoosingTherapy.com’s partner, offers online visits with psychiatrists who prescribe and adjust psychiatric medication, mostly through insurance.

The best apps for psychiatric medication ranked

We ranked these medication management apps by how hard their reminders are to miss, whether they can alert someone about a missed dose, their data practices, cost, and phone compatibility. None of them is a ChoosingTherapy.com partner.

1. Apple Health Medications (iPhone)

Apple’s Health app includes a free Medications feature that reminds you to log each scheduled dose. If you haven’t logged it within 30 minutes, it sends a follow-up reminder. Critical Alerts appear on the Lock Screen and play a sound even when your phone is muted or a Focus is on.

Apple Health supports cyclical, every-few-days, and as-needed schedules. You can export your medication list as a PDF or share it with a loved one through Health sharing. In the US, it also checks drug interactions, including factors like alcohol. Apple doesn’t describe refill reminders, so use your pharmacy’s app for those.

2. Medisafe (iPhone and Android)

Medisafe has the most ratings of the dedicated reminder apps in this guide: 4.71 from 101,457 US App Store ratings and 4.46 from 249,504 on Google Play. Its Medfriend feature may be useful for psychiatric medication if you want someone else to know about a missed dose. If you don’t respond to your reminders, Medisafe alerts your Medfriend one hour after the scheduled time. You can’t change that interval. A Medfriend can see your doses but can’t mark them as taken. A Dependent Profile lets a caregiver manage someone else’s medications.

You can set a pill count that triggers a refill alert. Medisafe also checks drug interactions, but only in English and only for medications selected from its database. US Premium costs $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year, and insurance doesn’t pay for it. Outside the US, Medisafe has been fully paid since January 1, 2026.2

Medisafe’s privacy disclosures conflict. Its privacy policy, updated December 1, 2025, says it may share personal information with research institutes, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and healthcare providers. It may also disclose de-identified, aggregated data on commercial terms. The same policy says it won’t sell health-app data or use it for advertising.3

Medisafe calls the app ad-free, but Apple’s privacy label lists Third-Party Advertising as a purpose. Google Play’s data-safety form says nothing is shared with third parties, while the Google Play listing says the app contains ads. We can’t tell which disclosure is current. The company also markets Medisafe to drug makers, listing more than 25 pharma partners and mental health among its areas.

3. Samsung Health Medications (Galaxy phones)

Samsung Health is free on Google Play and added Medications in the US in December 2023. Its strongest reminder setting uses a full-screen alert with a long tone. It also offers refill reminders, Galaxy Watch reminders, and interaction information covering other drugs, caffeine, and alcohol. You’ll need Android 8.0 or later and Samsung Health 6.26 or later.

4. MyTherapy (iPhone and Android)

MyTherapy, from smartpatient in Germany, is free with ads. It also offers a paid ad-free subscription and a $49.99 lifetime Plus option. It rates 4.77 from 8,556 US App Store ratings and 4.52 from 242,121 on Google Play. Alongside dose reminders and refill alerts, it includes a mood and symptom diary and creates reports for your doctor. Several people can share one account.

Ads are the main complaint: 6 of the 50 most recent readable App Store reviews, from August 2025 to January 2026, mention them. Google Play reviewers praise reminders that are hard to ignore, although some say a redesign made logging several medications harder. Apple’s privacy label lists identifiers used to track you, and MyTherapy’s privacy policy names Google Analytics and AppsFlyer. We found no HIPAA claim.

5. Pill Reminder – All in One (iPhone)

Pill Reminder – All in One rates 4.72 from 27,934 US App Store ratings. Its Apple privacy label says the developer collects no data. The free version allows only 2 reminders; a one-time $2.99 payment unlocks the rest.

The app includes refill alerts, as-needed doses, critical alerts, and support for several users on one phone. It doesn’t have an interaction checker or remote caregiver alerts. We found no Android version from this developer.

6. Bearable (mood and symptom tracking)

Bearable may appeal to you if you want to track how you’re feeling alongside your medication. It logs mood, sleep, anxiety, energy, and medication, shows how they correlate, and can remind you to take a dose. Most features are free. The subscription costs $34.99 a year or $6.99 a month, often discounted to $18.99 a year.

Bearable rates 4.77 on the US App Store and 4.58 on Google Play. Of its 50 most recent readable App Store reviews, 13 mention mood, mental health, or ADHD, and 14 mention price. Bearable says it will never sell personal data, although Apple’s privacy label lists contact info and identifiers as used to track you. Our best ADHD apps guide covers more trackers.

Pharmacy apps for refills

For ordering refills, your pharmacy’s app can handle the request directly. The free CVS Health app lets you order and track refills and check drug interactions. The free Walgreens app offers refill alerts, auto refills, and 24/7 pharmacist chat.

Amazon Pharmacy, inside the Amazon Shopping app, offers PillPack. It sorts medications into packets by dose at no extra cost and refills every 30 days. Its RxPass costs $5 a month with Prime and covers more than 50 medications, including sertraline, escitalopram, bupropion, and lamotrigine.

Medication apps that are gone or no longer updated

Round Health is no longer in the US App Store. Alto Pharmacy bought it in 2017, the year of its last update. Mango Health, acquired by TrialCard, is no longer in either the US App Store or Google Play. Dosecast has left the US App Store but remains on Google Play, where it rates 3.53 and was last updated in August 2025.

Do medication reminder apps help with psychiatric medication?

Reminder apps may help with psychiatric medication, but most trials showing a benefit studied other conditions. A 2020 meta-analysis found that 49% of people with major psychiatric disorders didn’t take their medication as prescribed, including 50% with major depression and 44% with bipolar disorder.1 US claims data for more than 527,000 people starting an antidepressant showed that 41% were taking it as prescribed at 3 months and 21% at 12 months.4

Across 16 trials in chronic disease, text-message reminders about doubled the odds of taking medication as prescribed.5 A 2025 review of 14 app trials found improvement in all of them, but none involved a psychiatric condition.6 Medisafe’s 2018 trial in high blood pressure found a small improvement in self-reported medication adherence, with no change in blood pressure.7

For psychiatric medication, we found two small studies. A 2015 trial of 57 college students taking antidepressants showed a trend that wasn’t reported as significant.8 A 2016 depression pilot had no control group.9 Across 46 depression trials, collaborative care improved antidepressant adherence most.10

When comparing these options, it helps to separate two questions: will the reminder be useful day to day, and how much research supports it for psychiatric medication? An app’s features can help you decide whether it fits your routine, while the limited research is worth keeping in mind.

Talkiatry’s help center says some medications take two to eight weeks to reach full effect and suggests noting symptoms and side effects daily. A mood-tracking app can help you keep that record. If you feel worse on a medication, tell your prescriber. If you’re thinking about suicide or feel unsafe, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. For an emergency, call 911.

Who can see your medication data

Before entering psychiatric medications into an app, read its privacy label. The FTC says many health apps fall outside HIPAA. Its Health Breach Notification Rule has explicitly covered health app makers since July 2024.11 In its first action under that rule in 2023, the FTC fined GoodRx $1.5 million for sharing users’ prescription data with Facebook, Google, and others.12

Pay particular attention to any differences between an app’s privacy policy and its store disclosures, as we found with Medisafe. Our mental health apps list covers more options.

Getting psychiatric medication management through Talkiatry

You’ll need a prescriber to change a dose or medication. Talkiatry is an online psychiatry practice where a psychiatrist works with you on a treatment plan through regular video visits and medication adjustments. It treats anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, depression, OCD, and PTSD, among other conditions. It doesn’t treat eating disorders or schizophrenia.

Talkiatry is in network with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Anthem, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, most Humana plans, Oscar, and Medicare Part B. It doesn’t take Medicaid. According to its insurance page, most patients pay $30 or less a visit once insurance is billed. First visits usually last 60 minutes, and adult follow-ups last 30. The insurance page now lists self-pay for people whose plans it doesn’t take, excluding Medicare or Medicaid, but no self-pay price is published.

You can request refills by phone, email, the healow app, or the patient portal. You’ll need to have had a visit within the last 90 days. Messages go through healow, with replies within 3 business days.

In October 2026, Talkiatry’s site carried a notice about a security incident at a vendor, TriZetto Provider Solutions. First detected on October 2, 2025, the incident may have exposed some patients’ Social Security and insurance member numbers.13 Our Talkiatry review has more information.

Is Medisafe still a good medication management app?

Medisafe remains a good option in the US if you need caregiver alerts on both iPhone and Android. Its most-helpful Google Play reviews raise concerns, though. They report reminders for doses already taken, alarms that became unreliable in August 2026, and a paywall prompt in September 2026. On Trustpilot, 10 of 13 reviews, all from outside the US, object to the move to paid.

If you don’t need caregiver alerts, Apple Health or Samsung Health covers the basics for free. Start there and consider a separate app if you need a feature your phone’s built-in option doesn’t offer.
