At a glance
  • BetterHelp does not run couples sessions on its own platform. Instead choose, “Couples” at signup and it transfers you to ReGain, a couples platform BetterHelp operates. Create one joint account for both partners and a single weekly fee.
  • ReGain costs $70 to $100 a week, billed every four weeks, so about $260 to $400 a month. That is the same cost range as BetterHelp individual therapy. ReGain does not take insurance.
  • Sessions run 30 to 45 minutes by video or phone, and both partners can join from separate devices. ReGain says about 90% of clients are matched within 48 hours.

BetterHelp is an individual therapy subscription. Couples sessions run on ReGain, a platform BetterHelp owns. ReGain use the same model of a questionnaire, a matched therapist, messaging between sessions, and live sessions of 30 to 45 minutes. As of September 2026, the price is the same as BetterHelp’s individual plan. One subscription covers both of you. ReGain does not bill insurance. Our Ritual runs 40 minute sessions, and Talkspace couples therapy is covered by insurance. Start the ReGain questionnaire to see your matched therapist.

Does BetterHelp offer couples therapy

Not directly. BetterHelp’s homepage asks “What type of therapy are you looking for?” and offers two answers: “Individual, for myself” and “Couples, for me and my partner.” if you choose Couples a pop-up appears with this wording: “Would you like to be transferred to Regain.us (operated by BetterHelp), where you can get couples therapy for you and your partner?” You can stay on BetterHelp for individual therapy or go to ReGain for couples therapy. The BetterHelp signup quiz asks the same question at step one and gives the same pop-up.

BetterHelp’s own FAQ page has no entry for couples, marriage or partners. Its therapists list “relationships” among their specialties, which means you can talk about your relationship in individual therapy on BetterHelp. Your partner, however, cannot join those sessions. Sessions with both of you and one therapist happen on ReGain. Choosing Therapy’s BetterHelp FAQ covers how the individual plan works.

ReGain describes itself as “an online relationship therapy platform” and says you can “start relationship therapy by yourself, or choose to invite your partner to join your account.” It also works for pairs who are not a couple. Its FAQ says you can “interpret ‘partner’ as the person you’re attending therapy with.” ReGain adds that expertise varies by therapist.

ReGain’s FAQ tells people seeking individual therapy to “explore our individual therapy platform BetterHelp.” The two brands are separate accounts and separate subscriptions. You cannot run couples and solo therapy in one account. A ReGain account is joint, and every written message is visible to both partners and the therapist. If one of you wants to speak to the therapist alone, you should schedule an individual live session inside the ReGain account.

How to get couples therapy through BetterHelp

The signup flow, verified on September 8, 2026, without creating an account:

  1. Go to BetterHelp and choose “Couples, for me and my partner,” or start the get-started quiz and pick “Couples” at question one. Either way the transfer pop-up appears.
  2. Click “Go to Regain.us (couples therapy).” A new tab opens on ReGain’s get-started page. If you arrived through a Choosing Therapy link, the 20% first-month discount carries over and the banner on ReGain confirms it.
  3. Answer ReGain’s first question: “Will your partner be joining you in therapy?” The options are yes, no, and “not sure yet, decide later.” Picking yes moves you into the matching questionnaire, which starts with gender identity.
  4. Finish the questionnaire and pay. ReGain asks for a nickname rather than your full name at this stage. Emergency contact details are collected once therapy starts.
  5. Invite your partner. A prompt appears after the questionnaire. You can also skip it and invite them later from account settings. From settings choose “Your partner,” then “Invite partner,” and enter their email and phone number. They get a link tied to your account.

ReGain says matching “can take a few hours or a few days, depending on therapist availability,” and that about 90% of clients are matched within 48 hours. If the match is wrong for you, the FAQ says you “can request to be matched to a different therapist at any time.” Users report using that option, and some say it took more than one try before the match felt right.

You can skip BetterHelp entirely and go straight to ReGain. The questionnaire and the discount are the same.

Who the therapists are

ReGain requires every therapist to be “a registered, trained, and experienced counsellor, psychologist, social worker, or therapist.” Each one needs a relevant degree, at least three years of experience, and credentials from their professional body. Therapists carry US, UK or Australian licenses depending on where they practice.

ReGain does not publish a therapist count or say how many specialize in couples work. Its FAQ says “most therapists on the Regain platform are offering relationship therapy to couples.” There is no directory to browse before you sign up. Matching is done for you from the questionnaire.

ReGain therapists cannot make official diagnoses or prescribe medication, and they cannot fulfill a court order. ReGain also lists situations it is not built for: minors, an urgent crisis, court-ordered therapy, a relationship where you fear for your safety, or anyone without a reliable internet device.

Prices checked on September 8, 2026. ReGain and BetterHelp US bands come from Choosing Therapy’s July 2026 reviews, because the partner FAQs show local currency outside the US. ReGain sets the exact figure inside the band by your location, preferences and therapist availability.

ReGain’s $70 to $100 a week is around the same price as BetterHelp’s individual plan, and one fee covers both partners. Users report the weekly fee adding up faster than expected once a few months of billing stack up.

ReGain bills to a debit card, credit card or PayPal on a recurring basis. To stop, go to Account settings, then Payment settings, and click on  “Change membership / cancel membership.” In the app the path is the “More” tab, then Payment settings. The FAQ says you can cancel “at any time, for any reason.” It does not describe refunds.

Choosing Therapy’s ReGain review covers the full ReGain experience and pricing in more depth.

How sessions work from separate devices

ReGain’s FAQ talks about therapy from separate devices saying,  “Your partner can join a video session or phone session from their own device as long as it’s connected to the internet.” For phone sessions with both partners, ReGain recommends a mobile phone so you can add your partner through the conference call function. Choosing Therapy’s July 2026 review confirmed separate-device sessions worked. The same review noted the mobile app lacked a mute button that the desktop version has.

Messaging is shared. Once your partner joins, they can message you and the therapist in the same thread, and the therapist replies asynchronously. ReGain says response time “may vary depending how busy they are.”

One Trustpilot reviewer in January 2026 wrote: “Our sessions are limited to 45 minutes, which is not enough time for three people to discuss sensitive and complex topics properly.” Users report the same complaint, that a session ends just as the conversation opens up. Our Ritual’s joint session is 40 minutes. Talkspace’s plan includes four live sessions a month.

What users report about ReGain

ReGain’s Trustpilot score is 2.2 out of 5 from 379 reviews, with 43% five-star and 50% one-star. BetterHelp’s own Trustpilot score is 3.9 from 9,661 reviews.

The five-star reviews are about the therapist. “We were lucky enough to find a great therapist the first time who understood the complexities of relationships,” wrote one reviewer in April 2026. Another couple had been “working with Dr. Laskowski for almost a year in couples therapy” as of January 2026. Reviewers who found a good match, including one who described herself as a longtime couples therapist, say they have no complaints about the individual therapists or the company itself.

The one-star reviews cluster on billing. Reviewers in August 2026 described being “billed for 18 sessions which were not schedule[d]” and “billed £540 for therapy we did not receive.” A review from October 2025 said the fifth session was blocked “without paying for an additional month.” Session quality complaints appear too: a therapist who “allowed one person to take control” and one who “did not show up” after a 30 minute wait.

Users report the joint account causing problems after a breakup. In one instance, a partner could not be removed and the account could not be deleted without the ex-partner’s consent. Another issue arose when a former partner could sometimes still see therapy messages after the relationship ended. Be sure to open new accounts for anything you want private.

Some users describe ReGain as among the least expensive platforms they have tried and say they liked their therapist, while also noting the therapist did not always handle related topics like family or budgeting well.

When BetterHelp and ReGain are not the right fit

Couples who want a therapist trained in a named couples method. ReGain matches you from a questionnaire and does not say which methods its therapists use. Our Ritual staffs “psychologists, marriage and family therapists and clinical social workers” trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy and the Gottman Model. Our Ritual matches you by a video call with a specialist. Couple plans run $60 to $84.75 a week with one 40 minute joint session a week, and a free partner account. Our Ritual also offers a 14-day money-back guarantee. It has a Trustpilot score of 4.5 from 220 reviews. Billing is the main complaint in Our Ritual’s low ratings. Our Ritual does not take insurance. See Our Ritual’s couple plans, or read Choosing Therapy’s Our Ritual review.

Couples who want to use insurance. ReGain, BetterHelp and Our Ritual all bill you directly, not insurance. Talkspace’s couples therapy is in-network with Cigna, Aetna, Optum, Anthem and Medicare plans, and Talkspace says “most insured members have a $0 copay.” Self-pay is $109 a week, billed at $436 a month, for messaging plus four live sessions. Partners can attend together or from separate places. Check your coverage for Talkspace couples therapy.

Couples who need something ReGain rules out. ReGain says it is not the right service if either of you fears for your safety in the relationship. A local therapist or a domestic violence advocate is the place to start. Court-ordered counseling also needs a provider who can document it, which ReGain cannot.

ReGain itself says it “isn’t a substitute for face-to-face therapy in every case.” A local couples therapist, found through a directory or a referral, gives you in-person sessions and a long-term relationship with one clinician. Some users report leaving ReGain after finding a local therapist that turned out to be cheaper once insurance was factored in. ReGain’s fee of $70 to $100 a week covers both of you, and there is no deductible.

What couples therapy is and who it helps

Couples and family therapy is psychotherapy that treats the whole relationship, looking at how each person’s behavior affects the others, per Psychology Today. It is used for marital conflict, parent-child conflict, substance use, sexual problems, financial stress, grief and life transitions.

Does couples therapy work online

A 2012 review in the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy found that couple therapy “positively impacts 70% of couples receiving treatment.”1 Studies published in 2021 and 2023 tested guided online couple programs adapted from Cognitive-Behavioral Conjoint Therapy. They showed initial gains for couples affected by PTSD.29 No published trial compares a subscription platform like ReGain with in-person couple therapy.
