At a glance
  • BetterHelp currently has no published information available about what happens for a therapist who misses a session. Its written rule covers only you: a $15 fee that may apply if you cancel inside 24 hours or miss, and sessions that expire with the billing cycle.
  • Users in 2026 report an extra week added, the fee refunded, a full refund, or nothing until they escalated. Reach out to the support team for a make-up session or a one-week extension.
  • Switching therapists is free and unlimited. You can follow these steps: profile icon, account settings, “my therapist,” request a new therapist, select one. Rematching can take a few hours to a few days.

Your session time has passed, but the therapist never joined. Because BetterHelp has already charged you for the week and its terms state that sessions do not roll over past the billing cycle, you could lose that week’s session unless BetterHelp provides a make-up session or extends your membership. While BetterHelp does not explicitly guarantee in writing that it will provide either remedy the company has taken action when members report missed sessions. In 2026 Trustpilot responses, BetterHelp has offered membership extensions and refunds of missed-session fees and has referred therapists’ attendance issues to its Clinical Operations team.

What To Do Right Now

  1. Message the therapist in the session room. Note the time you joined and how long you waited. Talkspace tells its clients to do the same and to allow the provider 10 minutes to respond.
  2. Contact BetterHelp support and ask for a specific remedy. Use the contact form at betterhelp.com/contact, email contact@betterhelp.com, or call 888-688-9296. BetterHelp says email is “typically addressed within a few business days” and phone “may provide a faster response.” Ask for one of two things: a make-up live session added to this billing cycle, or your membership extended by one week. The terms say sessions expire “unless otherwise advised by BetterHelp,” which is the wording support can use to grant an exception.
  3. Check whether you were charged a $15 no-show fee. One Trustpilot reviewer in June 2026 reported being charged the fee after their therapist was the one who did not appear. If that happens, provide them the information about the visit and request it be reversed in the same message.
  4. Request a rematch in the same message if you want one. Support can do it, or you can do it yourself in your account (steps below).
  5. Keep it in writing. Email leaves a record. If the reply is a template that talks about changing therapists and skips the missed session, reply and restate the remedy you asked for.

BetterHelp’s customer service article states that refunds are considered on a “case-by-case basis”. It’s terms do not provide a specific refund right for missed sessions. The one written refund provision is a 14-day cooling-off period, which applies only “if you reside in a country where you are legally entitled” to one. Whether that provision applies to you depends on where you live. In the United States, there is no general federal 14-day cooling-off right for online subscription services.

What BetterHelp’s Policy Says

At this time, BetterHelp’s terms include a Session Cancellation Policy, but that policy addresses the member’s absence rather than a therapist’s absence. It states, in part: “Late cancellations (within 24 hours of the session time) and missed sessions may incur a $15 fee per occurrence.” The policy explains that the fee is intended to give therapists sufficient advance notice when a member cannot attend. It does not provide a corresponding clause explaining what happens when the therapist misses the scheduled session. BetterHelp’s 24-question FAQ also does not appear to address therapist no-shows or missed sessions.

BetterHelp’s terms separately address unused sessions, stating that “any sessions (video, phone or chat) accrued but unused within a billing cycle will not roll over or be eligible for use after that billing cycle concludes.”¹ BetterHelp’s pricing article puts this more plainly: “Missed sessions generally cannot be rescheduled.”

The platform’s FAQ describes BetterHelp as a facilitator and states that therapists “are not employees of BetterHelp and the site doesn’t oversee them professionally.” Although BetterHelp does not appear to publish a specific public policy guaranteeing a refund or replacement session when a therapist fails to attend, the company has addressed therapist no-shows in public responses. In those replies, BetterHelp has described therapist no-shows as “not common” and said its Clinical Operations team “reviews cases like this to ensure accountability.”

For readers using BetterHelp’s insurance offering rather than its subscription service, the terms are different. Late-cancellation and cancellation fees are determined by the provider, and if an insurance claim is denied, the member may remain responsible for the cost of the session.

What BetterHelp Did For Other Members

The examples below come from user reviews dated April through August 2026, along with BetterHelp’s public replies where the company provided one. They suggest that BetterHelp has offered different remedies for therapist cancellations and no-shows, but that the outcome is not consistent from case to case.

  • Membership extended. A reviewer whose therapist cancelled and whose payment for that week was lost received an offer of a membership extension in BetterHelp’s reply (May 2026). Other users report receiving an extra week after asking for a refund.
  • Missed-session fees refunded. A reviewer whose first three therapists cancelled was offered a matching specialist and a refund of the missed-session fees (April 2026).
  • Full refund. A reviewer whose therapist cancelled “three consecutive times” reported having the membership cancelled and receiving a full refund, which BetterHelp confirmed in its June 2026 reply. Another reviewer whose therapist cancelled 10 minutes before the scheduled call reported receiving a refund after management follow-up (May 2026).
  • Refund after escalation. Some users report that they received a refund only after making repeated complaints or escalating the matter, with some saying they cancelled their account before receiving a resolution.
  • Nothing, or not yet. Not every complaint resulted in a clearly reported credit or refund. One reviewer whose therapist reportedly no-showed four times over three months said BetterHelp told them the refunds would be “adjusted on back end,” but reported that nothing had arrived (April 2026). Six additional one-star reviews from June through August 2026 describe therapist no-shows or same-day cancellations. BetterHelp replied to each with an offer to investigate and a request for the account email, but those public replies did not identify a specific credit or refund.

Rematching Is Different From a Refund

Users who have experienced multiple therapist cancellations sometimes report eventually finding a therapist who consistently attends through BetterHelp’s rematching process. However, rematching and compensation are two different things. A rematch gives you the opportunity to work with a different therapist. It does not, by itself, appear to compensate you for a missed session or lost membership time.

If a therapist misses your session, you need to contact BetterHelp support separately to request a refund, credit, membership extension, or other remedy. The examples above show that users have received different outcomes after doing so.

If you believe a platform outage caused the missed session, include that information when contacting BetterHelp support. Explain that the session was missed because the platform was unavailable rather than simply reporting that your therapist did not attend.

How to change your therapist on BetterHelp

BetterHelp’s guide outlines five steps for changing therapists, and its FAQ says members “may elect to be matched to a different therapist” whenever the fit isn’t right. Its published FAQ, terms, and advice articles do not state a limit or fee for changing therapists.

  1. Click your profile icon in the top right corner.
  2. Open “account settings.”
  3. Go to the “my therapist” section and click the option to request a new therapist.
  4. Browse the list of available therapists and pick one, or let BetterHelp match you. This is where you can change your preferences: the specialties, gender, and other criteria you want considered.
  5. Click “select this counselor” to confirm.

BetterHelp notifies you when the new therapist accepts, and you do not have to tell your current therapist. BetterHelp handles the switch. Its FAQ says matching can take “a few hours or a few days,” depending on therapist availability, and the same applies to rematching. Support can also handle the switch if you request it in your no-show message.

One 2026 Healthline reviewer described switching after four sessions as “guiltless… just pressing a button,” with three therapists to choose from. Other users report rematching more than once during their first weeks. If you want a therapist with a specific specialty or schedule, set those preferences during step 4 rather than accepting the default match. Choosing Therapy’s guide to finding a good BetterHelp therapist also covers what to select.

What a Missed Week Costs

BetterHelp charges roughly $70 to $100 a week, depending on the plan, for one live 30- to 45-minute session plus messaging. If the session is missed with no make-up, that can mean paying the full weekly cost without receiving the session. If BetterHelp records you as the no-show, a $15 fee may also apply. Financial aid is available to some members based on income and employment, and Choosing Therapy’s BetterHelp link takes 20% off the first month for new members.

Your membership renews until you cancel it. BetterHelp’s terms say it “must be canceled before it renews in order to avoid the next billing cycle.” To leave, use the “Cancel Subscription” link in the footer before your next charge date. Note that your billing cycle runs from the date you were matched, not the date you paid. Choosing Therapy’s BetterHelp FAQ covers the rest of the billing rules.

$69 to $109 a week self-pay; $0 copay for most insured members

Talkspace is the closest substitute: a subscription with messaging and live video, self-pay from $69 a week, and a $0 copay for most insured members. The help center says a missed provider session triggers an email, “Your provider missed your scheduled session,” and returns the credit. Providers must confirm each booking, so you know before the session whether they are coming. Check your coverage at Talkspace.

Grow Therapy bills your insurance directly and most clients pay $21 or less a session. After 10 minutes in the waiting room a pop-up lets you report the no-show from the session window, and the charge is dropped. Rematching is a search in your portal or a call to Client Success, Monday to Friday. Look up your plan on Grow Therapy.

Rula is insurance-first, about $15 a session for most patients, with video appointments “as soon as tomorrow.” A provider no-show or a cancellation within 24 hours costs you nothing, and replacing a provider from the Care Team tab cancels your future appointments with the old one automatically. Find a Rula provider.

BetterHelp still has reasons to stay: unlimited free rematches, a match in hours to days, and no per-session fees beyond the $15. If the no-show was one therapist rather than a pattern, a rematch through your account settings costs nothing and keeps your history. If it is the second or third therapist, the platforms above publish written rules for provider no-shows.
