ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental diagnoses in children, and a growing number of adults are receiving a late diagnosis of ADHD. CBD is a new mechanism that can be used to help both children and adults with ADHD due to its calming nature. ADHD comes with a lot of preconceived notions, however, many of the stereotypes do not represent the true impact of the condition.
What Is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a part of the chemical from the marijuana plant that does not have any psychoactive ingredients. CBD is used in topical and edible forms, without the inclusion of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the chemical compound that is what marijuana is known for. CBD is taken from the cannabis flower and bud and can offer a calming effect on the body and brain as it triggers the body’s own natural defense mechanisms against anxiety and stress. Many products that contain CBD are available over the counter in pharmacies, whereas products with THC, which gives the traditional high that marijuana is recognized for, often require a prescription medical card to access dispensaries, depending on state laws.1
Is CBD Legal?
CBD is legal as it is a hemp product however it can not have greater than .3% of THC in the product. Products must meet this requirement in order to qualify for over the counter availability. From what we know, CBD can be safe to use.2
CBD for ADHD
There are a few studies that support the claim that CBD can help with ADHD, however, there is still a lot of research that needs to be done to confirm the ongoing validity and legitimacy of the use of CBD for ADHD. Some research suggests that CBD can manage ADHD symptoms by managing both hyperactivity and impulsivity. It is hypothesized that since CBD can reduce hyperactivity, it can allow individuals to be able to focus more, however, current research has not yet studied this in depth.3
CBD for Other ADHD-Related Issues
Although research on CBD & ADHD is scarce, there is some research on CBD for depression, fatigue, or CBD for anxiety. Those with mood disorders, sleep disorders, and pain have been shown to respond well to the use of CBD. It is possible that symptoms of these disorders overlap with ADHD symptoms or are masking ADHD, which may suggest CBD as a promising intervention for ADHD, however more research on these symptoms from the lens of participants who have an ADHD diagnosis would be needed to confirm the hypothesis.4
Risk Of Using CBD for ADHD
CBD, like any other treatment option, also has risks. The first time someone uses CBD, they may not feel its benefits as they are not sure what they are looking for, and can overcompensate. While this won’t produce a high, it can make you aware of how you’re feeling, which can be uncomfortable. There is more research needed to understand the risk of CBD on ADHD. Cannabis can impact an ADHD person’s memory and executive function and reduce hyperactivity. CBD is not safe for children to use, especially children with other neurological conditions. Fortunately for adults, CBD is not an addictive compound in the same way that opioids and nicotine are, so the risk of addiction is lower than those other ingredients, however, addiction occurrences remain higher for those with ADHD than the general population.5
‘Natural’ Doesn’t Mean Safe
It is important to note that while CBD is from a plant, and many consider this to be a natural remedy and herb, it doesn’t guarantee that it is safe. It is important to make sure you discuss this with your doctor or pharmacists to ensure there are no drug interactions between CBD and other prescription drugs you are on. The risk of drug interactions can be very dangerous, and while the product is marketed over the counter, it is still critical you check with the pharmacist at the pharmacy.
Possible CBD Side Effects
Since CBD is not regulated, this can impact possible side effects as there can be a great amount of variation in the products. The quality is not accounted for so researching the product before you purchase it is important as not all products are the same.
Possible side effects of CBD include:6
- Appetite changes
- Drowsiness
- Headaches
- Dry mouth
- Changes in sleep
- Changes in weight
- Gastrointestinal upset
Types Of CBD
There are three different types of CBD. Full-spectrum CBD is derived from the cannabis plant and includes less than .3% THC content. Broad-spectrum CBD also has all parts of the cannabis plant however it likely only has small, less than .3% of THC. CBD isolate is pure CBD with no amount of THC. The methods that work the fastest are those that you can consume orally as it enters the bloodstream faster. CBD comes in the form of oil, gummies, pills and topical forms.7
CBD & ADHD Medications
CBD does not have significant interaction with ADHD medications however, for some, it can lead to short-term appetite changes when using CBD. It is believed that CBD may help alleviate the negative side effects of ADHD medications as CBD helps to reduce pain, anxiety, and inflammation in the body, however, more research is needed on the topic. CBD can, however, have a greater impact on managing ADHD in some than ADHD medications, and those who use CBD for ADHD have shown to sometimes need less ADHD medication.8 It is recommended that any treatment of ADHD be done in partnership with a doctor, who can help to manage symptoms and guage the effects of treatment.
Is CBD Safe For Children?
CBD is currently not recommended for use in children unless discussed with the child’s medical team. It is important that those products that are available over the counter are also kept out of reach of children, especially those marketed as edible gummies or liquids. Children with other neurological conditions can have adverse interactions with CBD, so it is important that children are not exposed to CBD without medical oversight and recommendations.5
How to Find Professional Support
It is never too early to talk to a professional about these concerns. If you have ADHD and are wondering how you can better manage your symptoms, you should consider seeking professional help to address any negative symptoms associated with your ADHD symptoms. You can find a neurodiverse affirming therapist on an online therapist directory or online therapy platform. This is a good choice for finding a therapist who specializes in ADHD treatment, other mood disorders, and neurological disorders and has experience with the utilization of alternative treatments like CBD. If you are considering medication or switching medication or adding medication, you should consider seeing a psychiatrist. There are online psychiatrist options for those unable to get out to see one, however, virtual options are not viable for everyone but many can also meet in their offices, so it is a good choice for finding a provider who can help with ADHD medication management.
In My Experience
In my experience, using CBD to help manage ADHD is very promising. CBD has been shown to be effective in managing many physical and mental health issues and, with more research, may show its effectiveness with ADHD. It is important to make sure you are seeking therapy and medical oversight for any management of your ADHD to ensure you are safe. The outlook for ADHD is great, and people can go on to live a full life, and with the potential use of CBD, that quality of life may also further improve. Remember to have the courage to keep going and have a support system for the times it becomes overwhelming. You are certainly not alone in any of this.
