Preview LunaJoy
Currently available in 12 US states & D.C., LunaJoy specializes in therapy, psychiatry, and wellness services for women. Key features include medication management, individual therapy, group therapy, and wellness coaching, addressing diverse needs like anxiety, trauma, and reproductive health. LunaJoy also specializes in therapeutic support for women facing infertility, perinatal, postpartum, and menopausal issues.
Out-of-pocket, an initial psychiatry assessment costs $240 with $150 per follow-up. Initial intake appointments for therapy cost $150 with $125 per follow-up. LunaJoy accepts insurance from many providers, including Medicare and Medicaid.
While LunaJoy matches you with the first available provider instead of giving you a choice, but even so, both my psychiatrist and therapist were wonderful. They validated and supported me, and I actually teared up during both appointments. While I wish I had the option to choose my own provider, I was not disappointed with who I was assigned.
Primary obstacles to care with LunaJoy are location and coverage. If you don’t have insurance or if you live in a state that LunaJoy does not currently cover, you will likely want an alternative. Brightside Health and Amwell operate in a broader range of states and still accept insurance. For those who don’t have insurance, consider Open Path Collective.
Additionally, LunaJoy Health doesn’t offer services to men, children, or couples. For kids, teens, and their families, I suggest a platform like Bend Health. Couples who want counseling might consider Regain or Talkspace. Men can explore our list of best online therapy services, all of which provide mental healthcare for all genders.
Brightside - Therapy & Medication Using Your Insurance
Together, medication and therapy can help you feel like yourself, faster. Brightside Health develops personalized plans that are unique to you and offers 1 on 1 support from start to finish. United Healthcare, Anthem, Cigna, and Aetna insurance are accepted.
Detailed Review of LunaJoy
LunaJoy is an online women’s mental health program offering a variety of services across a women’s lifespan, ranging from individual therapy and medication management to group therapy and wellness coaching.
While the biggest downside we see is its lack of nationwide care, LunaJoy is continuing to expand its availability and insurance networks.

Therapy
Therapy with LunaJoy is similar to other online platforms. After signing up and filling out basic info, including your phone number, email, and date of birth, a brief mental health questionnaire is sent for you to complete prior to your appointment. There is a place to read all of the clinician’s bios, however, you cannot schedule your therapist from a directory and instead you’re matched by the platform. The HIPAA-compliant link for telehealth can be used on mobile or desktop.
I felt like my therapist was professional and supportive of my goals discussed for therapy, and I could see her being a good fit for me long-term.
Medication Management
LunaJoy includes medication management, with either a board-certified medical doctor or licensed nurse practitioner. Similar to other online medication management services, LunaJoy providers cannot prescribe controlled substances, such as Xanax or Adderall. The out-of-pocket cost for an initial 60-minute intake is $240 and 30-minute follow-up sessions are $150. Several insurance plans are accepted, which could drastically lower the cost.
It is important to know that medication management is not a requirement for going to therapy, and while I have been previously hesitant to try medication, I felt like my LunaJoy psychiatrist was able to listen and address my concerns. I teared up at the kindness and support I received, and I trusted her recommendation to begin medication to help manage my symptoms.
Wellness Coaching
LunaJoy wellness coaching costs $150 for first appointments and $125 for follow-up sessions. Wellness coaching differs from therapy as it focuses solely on the present and giving you strategies and tools to meet these goals. Therapy requires a diagnosis and often reviews your past to help identify patterns and behaviors.
I did not personally try LunaJoy’s wellness coaching feature.
Group Coaching
The primary objective of LunaJoy’s coaching groups is to facilitate education, skill building, and personal growth. LunaJoy Group Coaching costs $35 per session and is not covered by insurance. Each group will vary in length but is generally 6–8 weeks long. You have to contact customer service or submit a form online to express your interest.
Group topics include:
- Promoting wellness and self-care
- Navigating pregnancy and postpartum
- Dealing with stress and anxiety
- Perinatal grief and loss
I did not personally experience group coaching, and I wish I could have looked at availability of the groups without having to contact customer service.

Alternatives & Competitors
LunaJoy’s primary limitations are related to location and insurance coverage. If you don’t have insurance or live in a state where LunaJoy isn’t available, you’ll likely need to explore other options.
Additionally, LunaJoy specializes in supporting women throughout various life stages. As a result, men, children, adolescents, and couples may need to consider other platforms for therapy or medication management.
Brightside Health
For those who don’t live in one of the 12 states where LunaJoy currently operates, Brightside Health could be a decent option. Available nationwide, Brightside Health provides therapy and psychiatry services to adults, as well as unique crisis care and intensive outpatient options for those with more acute mental health issues.
