At a glance
  • Talkspace offers a messaging-only plan for $69 a week, or $276 a month. It includes unlimited text, voice and video messages to a licensed therapist, and replies “within one working day, during their business hours, five days per week.”
  • With insurance, messaging is billed as therapist sessions. Talkspace says most insured members pay a $0 copay and its help center says the average is $30 or less. Medicaid is not accepted.
  • An 850-person randomized trial published in 2025 found message-based therapy matched weekly video for depression, with fewer people dropping out.

Talkspace offers a messaging-only therapy plan at $69 a week, about $276 a month. You have access to a private virtual room with a licensed therapist and can send text, voice or video messages whenever. There is no limit on how many messages you can send. Replies come during the therapist’s working hours, five days a week, so you should hear back within about a working day and not always in real time. Insurance can cover the same service, billed as messaging sessions you start yourself with a copay after each one. Note that Talkspace does not take Medicaid. Anyone in a life-threatening situation should call 988 immediately. Check whether your insurance covers Talkspace, or read on for what the plan includes and how it compares.

What Talkspace texting therapy is

Talkspace’s pricing page lists three individual therapy plans. Talkspace advertises, “Message your therapist any time” and “Receive a response 5 days/week.” Its text-therapy page adds: “Send unlimited messages through text, video, or voice messages”. “There’s no limit to how many messages you send, and you can review old messages in your room to track your progress.”

The exchange is not always live. In Talkspace’s words: “Online text therapy at Talkspace isn’t live texting … you can send text, voice, or video messages whenever you want and your therapist will message you back as soon as they can.” The therapy room is open around the clock, but therapists reply only during their working hours.

You are always messaging a real person. Talkspace states that “you are messaging with a real licensed therapist and not an AI tool.” It sells a separate AI product called Tee at $19.99 a month, which is not therapy and not part of any therapy plan.

Talkspace does not offer in-person sessions. Its therapists are licensed in your state, hold a master’s degree and have completed 3,000 hours of supervised work. Every therapist on the platform is expected to do messaging work, as there is no separate messaging tier of clinicians.

How fast the therapist replies

Talkspace’s tightest commitment is a reply within one working day, during the therapist’s business hours, five days a week.

On the recruiting side, Talkspace tells therapists to “set your availability to respond to clients’ messages 5 days a week (your preferred days)” and describes the cadence as “similar to email rather than instant messaging.” Two days off per week are the therapist’s choice, so ask which days in your first exchange. Talkspace’s own FAQ says the same: “Make sure to discuss expectations with your therapist when you first start online text therapy.”

Quick logistics questions, such as scheduling, can be sent outside a formal messaging session without starting one.

The weekly figures are billed as a monthly subscription by default, with 10 to 20 percent off for quarterly or biannual billing. You can cancel before any renewal date and pause an out-of-pocket plan for up to seven days at a time. Talkspace does not refund charges once services have been rendered, though support can review a request within 90 days, no guarantee. Payment is by credit or debit card, including HSA and FSA cards. Out-of-pocket members can request a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement.

Teens aged 13 to 17 have the same $69 messaging plan. Couples therapy is $109 a week with video and messaging for both partners.

Choosing Therapy’s Talkspace cost guide and Talkspace promo code page cover the plans and first-month discounts.

Does insurance cover texting therapy

Talkspace’s insurance page lists “ongoing messaging” among the covered formats. Its text-therapy FAQ says: “Yes, online text therapy can be covered by insurance like other telehealth options.” The coverage page lists Aetna, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Optum, Oscar, Carelon, Regence, TRICARE and Medicare. Average copays are $15 for Aetna, Anthem, BCBS, Optum and Cigna, $25 for Carelon and $5 for Regence. TRICARE and Medicare members average $0.

Under insurance or an employee assistance program, “you’ll choose when you’d like to initiate a messaging session with your provider,” and the copay “is typically charged after your completed session.” Which formats your plan covers is plan-specific. Talkspace tells members to confirm coverage with their benefits provider. Members with high-deductible plans pay the session rate until the deductible is met. Talkspace says that if the signup flow shows subscription prices after you enter your insurance, your plan is probably not in network.

Talkspace does not accept Medicaid. No referral is needed. Insured members “can start messaging your provider right away after you complete the matching process,” which takes up to 48 hours.

Humana and Talkspace

Talkspace does not accept commercial Humana plans. Talkspace confirmed on September 4, 2026 that only Humana Military, the TRICARE East contractor, is in network. Humana Military went in-network with Talkspace in August 2024. The agreement covers “the ability to choose between live and asynchronous text messaging therapy modalities.” TRICARE members have an average $0 copay for Talkspace therapy in all 50 states. Commercial Humana members should run Talkspace’s eligibility check and, if it fails, look at Grow Therapy or Rula below.

Medicare and seniors

Original Medicare Part B and Medicare Advantage both cover Talkspace therapy in all 50 states and DC, by live session or messaging. Original Medicare does not cover Talkspace psychiatry. Talkspace’s 2026 analysis of 1,546 clients aged 65 and over found 35 percent used messaging only and 61 percent combined messaging with live sessions. That is per Talkspace’s own research. A 2022 cohort study in Frontiers in Psychiatry, listed on Talkspace’s research page, found older adults using message-based psychotherapy had similar symptom improvements to younger patients, although they took a bit longer.1

How to choose messaging at signup

The signup flow at match.talkspace.com was tested on September 8, 2026, without creating an account. It runs in this order:

  1. Pick the service type: Therapy for ages 18 and over, Teen Therapy, Couples Therapy or Psychiatry.
  2. Pick how you will pay: “Check insurance coverage,” “Pay out-of-pocket” or “Access through my organization.”
  3. Answer the matching questionnaire: why you are seeking help, sleep, physical health, your gender, preferred therapist gender and date of birth.
  4. Choose your plan at the “Review Details” page, where the coupon field also sits.

Plans can be changed later from your account, and insurance can be added from “Update my coverage.” Matching takes up to 48 hours, and the pricing page says switching therapists costs nothing. Start the Talkspace questionnaire and pick the messaging plan at the Review Details page.

Does texting therapy work

JAMA Network Open published a randomized trial of 850 adults with depression in October 2025, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health. The trial compared message-based therapy with weekly video therapy on the Talkspace platform over 12 weeks. Response rates at week 12 were 47.5 percent for messaging and 47.2 percent for video and remission was 31.4 percent against 30.3 percent. Fewer messaging participants had disengaged by week five, 13.2 percent against 21.3 percent. The authors concluded “there were no differences between groups on improvement in depression or social functioning.”2 The trial had no no-treatment control group, and two authors were Talkspace employees or grantees.

An earlier trial of 83 people in 2023 found the same pattern, with large improvements in depression for both formats and no significant difference between them.3 A 300-person trial of text-delivered Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD has a published protocol and no results yet.

Talkspace’s marketing goes further than its trials. The text-therapy page says online therapy is “proven to be as effective, if not more effective than face-to-face therapy.” The trials compared messaging with video, not with in-person care. Both formats produced the same improvement.

Depression and anxiety head the condition list on every Talkspace service page. Its telehealth services also cover stress, relationships, insomnia, addiction, OCD, trauma and grief by text. Its own footer says: “If you are in a life threatening situation – don’t use this site. Call 988.” Messaging with a reply window of a working day is not built for a crisis.

What users report

Talkspace’s Trustpilot score is 4.4 out of 5 from 2,379 reviews, with 71 percent five-star and 16 percent one-star. Reviews that mention messaging are mostly about access between sessions. “I have been able to cover more ground with her thanks to the messaging session that keeps us connected,” wrote one reviewer in February 2026. Another in May 2026 said “the messaging feature, can’t describe how amazing it feels to vent out a problem as it’s happening.” A December 2025 reviewer described the format as “text as much as you want.”

Other reviewers complain about reply speed and the depth of the replies. A four-star reviewer in January 2026 wanted “better messaging response times.” App Store reviews describe going “days at a time” without a reply and a therapist who recorded audio replies “which introduces huge delays.” E-counseling’s tester wrote about Talkspace in February 2026. The first reply came after six hours and was “a single line offering advice.” The tester then switched therapists and received “four to six lines” that were “helpful and thoughtful.” Mellowed’s tester on the messaging-only plan found “waiting a whole day for feedback on my problems was too long in many cases.” HelpGuide’s August 2026 tester received replies “within a few hours,” and 99 percent of its survey respondents were satisfied with responsiveness.

One-star Trustpilot themes are billing and support rather than therapists. The reviews focus on unexpected charges, support tickets that “can take weeks for a reply,” and providers leaving without notice. Talkspace’s iOS app holds a 4.8 rating from about 47,000 ratings.

The reply speed and depth these testers describe vary by therapist, and switching therapists is free. PsychCentral’s 2022 survey of 54 Talkspace users found half needed to switch therapists to find a fit.

When Talkspace texting therapy is not the right fit

If you want a live session every week without paying for the video plan. BetterHelp bundles unlimited messaging with one live session a week, by video, phone or live chat, at $70 to $100 per week. It states no reply-time commitment for messages. Healthline’s 2026 testers got prompt reply notifications but found one therapist’s answers thin. Choosing Therapy’s Talkspace vs BetterHelp comparison sets the two side by side.

If you have insurance and want scheduled sessions with a low copay. Grow Therapy works with 125 or more plans, and which ones it takes, Medicaid included, varies by state and plan. It averages $21 copay a session with insurance, and says most clients start within two days. Grow Therapy offers live sessions only. Look up your plan on Grow Therapy. Rula patients typically pay $15 a session with insurance and meet by live video “as soon as tomorrow.” Rula’s FAQ does not mention messaging. Find a Rula provider here.

If you have Medicaid or commercial Humana. Talkspace takes neither. Grow Therapy works with 125 or more insurance plans and takes Medicaid in some states, and it handles the billing and claims for you. Check your own state and plan on its cost estimate tool.

If you are in crisis. Call or text 988. A messaging plan with a working-day reply window is not built for an emergency.

Talkspace’s own comparison with in-person therapy claims a traditional session costs “$175 – $500,” an unsourced figure. An in-person therapist sees you face to face at a set appointment time, and you arrange the travel and parking around it. Talkspace matches you with a licensed therapist in your state within 48 hours, and insured members can start messaging as soon as they are matched, with no referral or prior authorization.

Talkspace services beyond messaging

The official website is talkspace.com. Signup runs at match.talkspace.com and the help center at help.talkspace.com. Talkspace’s healthcare services run to four lines: individual therapy for adults, teen therapy for ages 13 to 17, couples therapy and psychiatry. Psychiatry is billed per session out of pocket, at $299 for an initial evaluation and $175 per follow-up. Talkspace also runs a Florida provider directory with city pages for Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando, Tampa and Tallahassee, and its providers are licensed in the member’s state.

Talkspace does not offer an intensive outpatient program. The association comes from the acquisition by Universal Health Services in 2026. The parent company runs its own inpatient, intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization programs. The footer now reads “Talkspace – a UHS company.”

If the messaging plan fits, check your insurance and start with Talkspace.
