In conducting our second review of ADHD Online’s psychiatry services, I was impressed by its easy-to-use features and accessibility; however, I felt its approach wasn’t as comprehensive as alternatives.

Detailed Review of ADHD Online Health

ADHD Online, operated by Mentavi Health, provides assessment and diagnosis for ADHD symptoms, as well as coaching, therapy, and medication management. The initial assessment costs $179 and screens for several disorders. Treatment availability varies by state and pricing varies by provider. ADHD Online does not accept insurance.

Online ADHD Assessment & Diagnosis

One of the main offerings from ADHD Online is its unique virtual ADHD assessment and diagnostic system. For an upfront fee of $179, patients can complete a detailed questionnaire screening for ADHD and some other disorders, such as binge eating disorder, chronic loneliness, and problematic social media use.

ADHD Online claims its ADHD assessment is built on credible, recognized tools like the ASRS-2 (a clinical ADHD assessment), PHQ-9 (depression screener), GAD-7 (anxiety assessment), Bergan’s Scale (measuring social media addiction), and additional screeners for conditions like binge eating disorder and chronic loneliness. The clinical criteria for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders (DSM-5) is built into the questionnaire as well, so the psychologist that reviews it can see how your current symptoms line up with established diagnostic criteria.¹

ADHD Online bases its diagnostics on written responses, which can certainly provide valuable insights to the psychologist who reads them. However, some nuance is inevitably lost when compared to more comprehensive evaluations. That’s why I believe ADHD Online’s model falls short of the depth you’d get from an in-person or even other telehealth setting. Having a provider in front of you to clarify and answer questions is ideal—something ADHD Online lacks.

Nonetheless, this method of ADHD assessment may be ideal for those without access to other options. In-person treatment can be time-consuming, expensive, and hard to find. While ADHD Online may lack some depth, it could be a game-changer for individuals with limited access to care.

Medication & Therapy Treatment for ADHD

If a patient is diagnosed with ADHD through the ADHD Online assessment, they will have the option to sign up for therapy, coaching, or medication management services. The availability of these services varies by state, as do the providers that offer them. Medication or psychiatry appointments cost $169 per session whereas therapy and coaching costs $99 per session.

I decided to schedule an appointment with one of ADHD Online’s medication providers. Upon sign-up, I noticed that there were remarkably few provider options available – four were available in my area including two MDs and two nurse practitioners. Of the available providers, only one had a fully filled-out bio that offered any information. Ultimately, only one of these providers was viable for me due to scheduling; the others only offered weekend or evening sessions, which I couldn’t attend. However, these are popular times for most people, so may offer more availability than worked for me.

I was able to secure an appointment with my provider within a couple of days of receiving my diagnosis from the assessment I completed. I joined the session from my iPhone, on my home WiFi network from the Zoom mobile app. ADHD Online uses Zoom for all of its telehealth sessions. During the session, the audio from my phone disconnected and I had to leave the call and then come back, but there weren’t any other issues.

My session was scheduled for 30 minutes, but we only needed about 15 minutes for my prescriber to get some insight into my background, my day-to-day routine, and what symptoms I’ve been dealing with. She also asked for basic vital signs including my height, weight, and blood pressure. I’ve definitely seen far more comprehensive intake sessions, but it seems my provider was mostly just using my initial assessment for the information she needed. My prescriber decided I would be a good fit for Adderall, which is a stimulant medication (and a federally controlled substance). After quelling some of my concerns about the potential for side effects and dependence, and deciding that this was a treatment route I was open to, she sent the prescription to my local pharmacy.

I ultimately did not pick up this medication, as after more consideration I didn’t feel stimulants were a good fit for me. Overall, I felt the session was adequate, but maybe a bit lacking in terms of detail. My prescriber didn’t ask me about any history of current therapy or non-medication remedies, nor did she ever suggest them. I would have liked to discuss less intensive methods for controlling symptoms aside from jumping straight to an Adderall prescription.

According to the ADHD Online website, medication treatment is not available in all states, and stimulant medication is available in even fewer still, so your location will be the main factor in the type of medication your provider recommends.

ADHD Online offers therapy with licensed therapists in a handful of states, and where therapy is unavailable, the platform offers mental wellness coaching. In my area, therapy is unavailable, and there were only two coaches available, however, they were available on a wide range of dates and times.

I didn’t end up using ADHD Online’s therapy or coaching services, so I can’t speak to how they work firsthand. However, sessions are handled via Zoom and are priced by the session just like the medication management service. Therapy and coaching sessions cost $99 per session. All providers are licensed therapists or certified wellness coaches. Keep in mind that certification for wellness coaches is not as stringent as it is for licensed therapists. Coaching is available in all 50 states, whereas therapy is only available in a few.

Medication treatment is available after the assessment at a rate of $199 for initial consults, and $169 for follow-ups. Meanwhile, coaching and therapy with ADHD Online is priced at $99 per session. Does ADHD Online Accept Insurance?
No, ADHD Online does not accept insurance, but you can use FSA or HSA funds for mental health services that ADHD Online provides. Or, you could request a superbill for potential out-of-network reimbursement. It’s wise to check with your insurance provider to ensure you can use your HSA/FSA funds for this. ADHD Online also partners with Klarna to provide affordable payment plans.

Who Does ADHD Online Serve?

ADHD Online serves anyone over age 18 in the US, to some degree, however, the exact services available depend on the state. In some states, ADHD Online can offer diagnosis, medication, and therapy, however, most states only allow for diagnosis and medication treatment. A few states only allow for diagnostic assessments; however, ADHD Online offers coaching in all 50 states.

While ADHD Online will screen for multiple disorders in its assessment, the platform only treats ADHD. If ADHD Online doesn’t work for your needs in your state, here are several additional online ADHD treatment options. If you’re diagnosed with a different disorder, you’ll need to look elsewhere for treatment. In terms of platforms that offer a combination of medication and online therapy services, two of our favorite platforms are Brightside Health and Talkspace.

User Reviews for ADHD Online

There aren’t as many user reviews for ADHDOnline.com as you’d find for many platforms. Trustpilot and the BBB both have a handful of user reviews, most of which tend to skew negative. The major issues cited in reviews involve complaints about perceived unfair pricing, questions about legitimacy, and concerns about provider credentials. Many reviewers were upset that they paid a large amount of money and had ultimately not received medication or the medication they expected. It’s worth considering that your experience and what medication you are ultimately prescribed may vary considerably depending on which provider you work with.

Who May Want an Alternative to ADHD Online?

ADHD Online is not a good fit for people with viable in-person options, people with non-ADHD symptoms, and those struggling with severe mental health symptoms or suicidal thoughts.

ADHD Online Vs. Competitors

Compared to ADHD Online, Brightside Health is a great option that also treats other disorders. Talkspace is great for treatment, but can’t formally diagnose ADHD. Finally, Talkiatry is your best bet if you have an in-network insurance plan, but it’s unavailable for uninsured people.
