When you think of Headspace, you likely think of it as a meditation app. However, Headspace recently launched Headspace Care, which offers online therapy, coaching, and even medication, accessible through the Headspace app for additional fees. Getting started with a therapist on Headspace Care was incredibly simple, mirroring the ease-of-use the app is known for. Plus, it accepts many major insurance providers, meaning users could get therapy for a reduced cost, or even free, with some insurance plans.

What I liked about using Headspace Care: Signing up for therapy is really simple, especially if you already have a Headspace account. Everything happens in the Headspace app, with a separate tab for Headspace Care services. Plus, it accepts many major insurance plans, so many users could pay less than $35 per therapy session.

What I didn’t love about Headspace Care: There seemed to be some glitches in the Care section of the app—a few times when I tried to access the Care tab, it would get stuck on the loading screen, and when I was talking to my coach, I was kicked out of the chat room and couldn’t get back in to finish our session. Plus, when I was using Headspace Care through my insurance provider, I had to contact customer service to receive access to therapy as the system was glitching and repeatedly kicking me out of the signup process.

Headspace Care’s therapy and coaching services are available to anyone in the US over the age of 18. Therapy can be accessed directly in the Headspace App through the Care tab, regardless of whether or not you pay for the basic Headspace subscription. If you do have a regular Headspace subscription, you can also gain access to its meditation and sleep support content, as well as emotional support between sessions through Ebb, its proprietary AI companion.

We think Headspace Care is best suited for:

  • Those who already use Headspace, or who are looking for similar resources alongside therapy
  • Those with in-network insurance
  • Those who can access Headspace through an EAP, insurance, or school plan

Online therapy and other clinical services through Headspace should not be used by people experiencing any type of mental health emergency or crisis.

While Headspace’s therapy could be a great, convenient option, especially for those familiar with the app already and who have in-network insurance, it may not work well for everyone. If you have behavioral health insurance but it isn’t accepted by Headspace, we recommend trying out Grow Therapy, which accepts the most insurance plans we’ve seen. If you’re paying with cash, BetterHelp is a slightly more affordable option, plus it has different extra features that may be more appealing to some, such as free group sessions and a journaling space.

Detailed Review of Headspace Care

Headspace Care is a quick and convenient way to access a therapist, especially if you’ve already got the Headspace app. While therapy is a separate subscription from Headspace’s typical mindfulness-based offerings, with insurance, users could pay as little as $0 per therapy session, and the cash-pay rate is $149 per session. Anyone can access Headspace Care with or without paying for a meditation subscription, which costs $12.99 monthly or $69.99 yearly.

We rated Headspace Care highly in terms of access to providers (through messaging and easy scheduling), cost and payment options, and reliability. However, it ranked lower in terms of usability, as I had many issues with the app not loading properly, and I read the same from many reviewers online as well. I also had to reach out to customer service to be sent proper onboarding for therapy services, though my support person was responsive and helpful.

Online Therapy Through Headspace Care

Signing up for online therapy with Headspace Care was a breeze. I entered my state and insurance plan and was given an estimate for how much my therapy appointments would cost. Then I created an account, scheduled an appointment for the very next day (I had two therapists I could choose from who could see me at the time slot I wanted), entered my credit card information, and I was all set.

This is somewhat different from other online therapy platforms that ask more thorough intake questions to match you with a provider who specializes in your concerns; I’m guessing that Headspace still has a relatively small roster of therapists, and that they may add more precise therapist matching in the future. However, I could still look at the available therapists’ bios, which would change if I changed the time I was available. I still recommend trying to find a provider who specializes in the issues you’re coming to therapy for, though this may involve some clicking around in a less-than-convenient way.

I tried to join my session through my web browser on my computer, but when logged in I couldn’t find anywhere that listed my therapy session, or anything related to Headspace’s Care features. However, joining from my phone was incredibly simple—all I did was hit one button to join the call, then when my therapist hopped on we were all set. My therapist did mention that she’d had other clients join from their computers, so I’m not totally sure what the issue was.

Therapy sessions are slated to last 50 minutes, though mine was slightly under, around 40. We ended the call after talking through several basic intake questions and discussing a bit about what I’d like to accomplish in working together. My therapist was patient and friendly, and immediately after our call she emailed me a worksheet on sleep hygiene, something we had talked about as I’d had issues with sleep recently.

Note: Headspace therapy appointments have a relatively harsh cancellation policy: If you cancel your appointment within less than 48 hours or you don’t show up, you’ll be charged a $125 fee. Failure to join your scheduled meeting within five minutes could result in that same fee, and three consecutive cancellations could mean termination of care.

Online Mental Health & Wellness Coaching

Along with therapy, Headspace Care also offers text-based wellness coaching. It costs $99.99 monthly and cannot be covered by insurance, but users can get 50% off their first month to try the service and see if it’s a good fit.

Coaching differs from therapy in that it’s focused on present-moment concerns and actionable steps you can take now to make healthy changes. Coaches through Headspace are not necessarily trained therapists, but have gone through some sort of accreditation, whether that’s through the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching, or they have a masters-level degree in a field related to psychology. Since coaches are not providing therapy services, they cannot give any type of mental health diagnoses.

A monthly coaching subscription includes:

  • Three one-on-one, 30-minute text sessions a month with a coach
  • A personalized plan where you can learn new skills and increase healthy habits
  • Plus the full Headspace library of meditations and sleepcasts

When I signed up for Headspace Care through my insurance provider, I had unlimited access to coaching sessions. I used the service once and the coach gave me some good advice for some of the sleep and anxiety issues I was dealing with, as well as some resources within the Headspace app to look at on my own time. However, during my session, I got kicked out of the chat platform and couldn’t get back on—it just wouldn’t re-load and I had to end my session early.

Medication Management Through Headspace Care

In addition to therapy and coaching, Headspace Care also offers medication management and psychiatry services to many of its users. Intake sessions typically last 45–50 minutes, then 20-minute follow-up sessions are scheduled at regular intervals to see how the meds are working and if you need any changes.

Note: I did not personally use this service, though I had access to psychiatry when I was signed in to Headspace through my insurance provider. However, when I signed up on my own as a cash payer this service was not available to me, and I was only able to access therapy and coaching through the Care tab. So, note that psychiatry may or may not be available to you through Headspace Care.

Additionally, Headspace Care psychiatrists are not able to prescribe any controlled substances, such as benzodiazepines like Xanax and Klonopin for anxiety, or stimulants like Adderall for ADHD.

Headspace’s AI Companion, Ebb

If you pay for a regular Headspace subscription, you’ll also have access to its proprietary AI chat bot, Ebb. Ebb can offer emotional support, ask thoughtful questions, and provide personalized ideas for meditations and other mindfulness activities from the app. You can type out your thoughts or simply talk back and forth with Ebb using its voice feature.

I found Ebb easy to talk to, and though some of the advice was a bit on the simplistic side, some of the questions it asked certainly helped me think deeper about the topics I discussed with it.

I don’t recommend Ebb as a replacement for therapy, but it could be a great resource for in-the-moment support, such as:

  • Asking Ebb for mindfulness recommendations and other supports when you’re having a stressful day
  • Talking through a specific problem you’re having at work or in a relationship to gain a slightly different perspective
  • Getting motivation to start a specific task or goal, having it help you break down your goal into manageable steps
  • Asking for self-care advice or a meditation to try if you’re needing new inspiration

Note: Ebb may or may not be present depending on how you’ve signed up for Headspace. For instance, I did not have access to Ebb when I signed up through my insurance provider, Kaiser. However, when I signed up for a regular Headspace subscription on my own, the Ebb tab appeared and I could chat as much as I pleased.

Headspace Care Cost & Insurance

If you pay out-of-pocket, every therapy session with Headspace costs $149. However, Headspace is in-network with over 45 insurance providers, including Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Optum, and Blue Cross Blue Shield. It claims that most members who use insurance end up paying $0–$35 per therapy appointment. While HSA and FSA payments aren’t directly accepted, users can submit receipts for reimbursement on their HSA and FSA accounts.

Coaching cannot be covered by insurance, but costs $99.99 monthly after a half-off trial month.

A handful of insurance providers, including Aetna, Cigna, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare, and Kaiser Permanente, have specific partnerships with Headspace, meaning members could have access to free features through their insurance plan. If you use one of these providers, it could be worth checking with them to see what services you could get for free. As a Kaiser member myself, I got free access to Headspace’s meditation subscription, as well as its coaching services, and I could access therapy and psychiatry with a reasonable copay.

Alternatives & Competitors

Headspace Care could be a great option for online therapy, especially if your insurance is accepted. If not, we recommend checking out Grow Therapy, as it accepts the most insurance providers we’ve seen, including some Medicaid and Medicare plans. If you’re paying out-of-pocket, BetterHelp can be a great intro to therapy and is a more affordable option for those who want to attend therapy regularly. If you’re looking for a bundled therapy and medication plan, Brightside Health offers several options and also takes many insurance plans.

If your insurance plan isn’t accepted by Headspace, we recommend looking into Grow Therapy, where you can browse through a list of providers who accept your insurance and find the best fit for your needs. Grow offers both therapy and medication management, and its directory hosts more than 15k providers. If you don’t plan on using your insurance, each provider’s cash-pay costs are listed clearly in their bios, and while they each set their own rate, we’ve seen a range of $75–$250 depending on the service.

If you don’t have insurance, BetterHelp’s per-session cost is more affordable than Headspace’s, though it uses a monthly subscription model instead of paying by appointment. It also offers some financial aid for those with lower incomes. Both platforms are super easy to use and make signing up a breeze, and while I was able to snag a next-day appointment with Headspace, BetterHelp even offers some same-day sessions.

Why You Can Trust My Review

I’ve spent hundreds of hours researching, testing, and reviewing online therapy services. I signed up for and used Headspace Care’s therapy and coaching services and found them to be incredibly straightforward on my phone, though less-so on a web browser, so if that’s a deal-breaker that could be worth considering.

All-in-all, therapy through Headspace Care could be a great choice for someone who already uses the app and who has an insurance plan that’s accepted by the platform.

History & News About Headspace

headspace

Year Founded: 2010
Founders: Andy Puddicome and Richard Pierson

Headspace was founded in 2010 by former Buddhist monk Andy Puddicome and his friend Richard Pierson. It began as a meditation app, offering a range of guided meditations and sleep recordings, and has grown into a full-service mental health resource, offering mindfulness resources, an AI companion, wellness solutions for businesses (including an EAP replacement), and therapy and psychiatric services.1

Puddicome and Pierson stepped down from Headspace leadership in January of 2021, as the business continued to expand with new ventures in direct-to-consumer and B2B projects.2 Also in 2021, Headspace merged with Ginger, an app first developed in 2011 as one of the first digital mental health platforms, to offer mental health services through the Headspace app.3

In 2025, Headspace has continued to expand, including a partnership with the U.S. Navy, the unveiling of its AI Companion, Ebb, and, in June, the launch of insurance coverage for therapy through the app.4,5,6
